Ok.

Big thumbs up. I am once more reminded how important it is to give any restaurant a 6 month stretch to find itself. Cuchara has reached its stride and the kitchen is turning out very fine food these days. I had a most excellent lunch today at Cuchara. It was their $15 comida corrida, consisting of, in my case, a bean and pasta soup, two kinds of tinga with a side of beans, tortillas, a crunchy dessert cookie like a bunuelo and agua de pina as a beverage. I was very impressed and am already looking forward to dining here again soon. Update June 2015 (based on a review by another reviewer and my comments to that reviewer). I moderate and/or participate in several local social media food groups. In addition, I have had the pleasure over my longer life to be able to spend a lot of time in Mexico due to our family having family friends in Mexico City. In my college years I would drive down from Austin in the summers. I have explored most of the country, most recently concentrating on vacations in Puebla, D.F. and Oaxaca. Every so often a question comes up on the social media of: "Where can I find authentic Mexican food in Houston. Not that Tex-Mex stuff." And this always makes me chuckle. Not just because what has become known as Tex-Mex is a valid sub category of Mexican food, but because Mexico is comprised of so many regions, each with its distinct contributions to the cuisine of the country. I sometimes wonder if what most people mean by "authentic" or "interior" is actually what I would call "Mexican resort hotel food". At any rate I confirm to you that what is being presented and served at Cuchara is about as authentic as one can get. Another critic mentioned that "the pozole was bland and unlike any other pozole that I have ever had". Well, that has no meaning for me. Some of the most spectacular pozoles that I have had were in D.F., not in Guadalajara, and, yes, by some standards they could be considered bland. I had the opportunity some time back to attend a special event at Cuchara in which they presented tastings of each of the 7 moles of Oaxaca. And the moles were spot on authentic.. Now, some people remark about the smaller portions and the pricing of the dishes. Personally, I am always full. Other countries dont anticipate a doggie bag carry food home as much as we do here in the states. Like, in D.F. you would never doggie bag from a restaurant. Im happily willing to support the price point because I find the food delicious. Freshly made. The ladies in the kitchen bring decades of traditional cooking style and knowledge to each dish. Cuchara, along with Hugos and Picos, are must dine destinations here in Houston for me on a regular basis.

DO NOT waste your time or money by coming to this sorry excuse for "high end " restaurant. HORRIBLE Service. Trust me you can get the same quality food at any hole in the wall taqueria off of Airline, or better yet a taco truck. Just because they share a space with Maxs Wine Dive doesnt give them the right to charge similar prices for sub par food and yet even worse, their service! When you go somewhere to spend about $50 a person you expect good service...or atleast a real waiter or waitress that knows the menu and will check on you within a 30min window each time. Just so you know what you are dealing with, chips and salsa are $12 lol. after i ordered the pork pozole 30 minutes went by before they told me they were out of it and also forget the appetizer we ordered. so i took what they recommended which were 3 tiny pork tacos for $19. And to top it all off my wife wanted a side order of rice and beans that were $10!! WTF?! Rice costs like .20 to make, thats just rediculous! Oh, and red pozole they were out of, they brought me the green one without me asking for it and when i tried to send it back they refused! At that point i just wanted to get out of there. Every 5 minutes a waiter would come with a plate that wasnt ours...very disorganized, horrible service. They had a special menu that day that the server couldnt not even explain which is acceptable at Taco Cabana but not a place that Cuchara makes the attempt to represent. For the same price go to Caracol, El Tiempo, Hugos, Anejo...hell even go to Los Tios and you will so much happier. I see the owner hardly responds to reviews. Seems very unprofessional just like their staff. They didnt deserve the 5% tip i left them, I even disputed the whole charge, they can fight with my bank if they really want that $100 lol

My family originally from Mexico City was there this afternoon during their brunch menu. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed with the menu, the prices, and service. First off, our waiter took so long to come get our drink orders, and we ended up getting a "bottle" of agua de piña ($10 the bottle vs. $4 the 4 oz glass!). When he finally showed up again to take our food orders we were told they were out of the carnitas... so we ended up ordering 4 pozoles rojos, 1 order of tacos de canasta, and 1 order of molletes. A while later, a guy who I suppose is the manager came to tell us they only had enough for 3 pozoles and very politely suggested the green chicken pozole (his attitude was good, so I volunteered to take the green pozole). All of our food came to the table except for the molletes.. so we waited, and waited, and waited until we were able to flag down our waiter (it wasnt that busy that he couldnt have come, he just chose not to) and asked about the molletes, a bread with black beans and melted cheese, seriously how long can that take?. It was still a while until he came back with them and we were all finally able to eat. My green pozole was ok, not impressive and from what I heard from the rest of my family their red pozole was pretty good. The tacos de canasta were also good and flavorful. We decided to try their 5 leches cakes and it was literally bread sitting in a deep bowl of a mixture of milk? It was very sweet, and my son liked it but was not worth $10. Overall, the food was ok, but overpriced and very disappointing that they do not have items listed on their menu, the service was poor and we wont be going back again.
