Aside from the fact that it recently burned on fire and wont be reopening until Groundhog Day, 2008, Harris Grill is my favorite bar in Shadyside easily, and probably all of Pittsburgh. This bar essentially has five "sections", all with a bit of a unique experience. The bar area itself is comfortably packed, even on weekday nights, with local grad students, professionals and the gay crowd overflow from the two gay bars on this street. Your occasional hipster or punk rocker will come in, and all in all the mix makes for an interesting night. Heavy smoking is typically on the menu, alongside a plethora of amazing food dishes (plenty for vegetarians, too) and probably a dozen different draft beers, mostly micros and imports, but dont worry yinz, you can find a Miller Light here too, if you want. And no shortage of PBR cans for the hardcore. Theres also a seated restaurant area on the first floor for those who feel more like sitting around a table and eating, but still being able to smoke. Large murals of monks and nuns brewing beer, painted by a local artist, cover the walls. Upstairs is non-smoking until 10pm, and theyll occasionally have a band up there. Its mostly a larger restaurant, with the prime seats located against the street-facing wall which is made up entirely of windows so you can spy on the less fortunate of the world who cant spend every Thursday afternoon here sipping beer and looking out the window. Theyve also got a nice little area full of couches where a more "lounge" feeling can be taken in. The front of the building has a huge patio and as long as the weather is decently above freezing itll likely be packed. Summer nights can mean an hour or more wait for the coveted seats, and this is indeed one of Harris main draws. But the small patio in the back is by far the best place in the bar if you want an intimate night out with your lady or just to hang out with friends. Ivy crawls up and down the wooden fence and the tables are snugly situated just far away from eachother that you dont feel like youre bumping elbows with your neighbors, but close enough that you still feel like youre out in a crowd. All around, this bar is the smokinest. Hopefully re-opening will come swiftly, and even though a cigarette thrown in the trash is one of the suspicions as to how the place caught on fire, Im hoping theyll still allow us to get cancerous all up in the place.

Ive been to shilo grill numerous times and everytime i had a great time. So, I was expecting the same here since they are sisters but it was this one waitress ruined our night. the drinks were great but this waitress PJ (she didnt even tell us her name. this is from the receipt i have) came up to us and the first thing she said was have our IDs ready if you are ordering drinks until she comes back. OK, that way we can save a minute or two. That was whatever. And after she brought our drinks, there was a huge moth sitting right above me on the tip of the parasol. So I asked her if she can help get rid of that. As soon as she saw the moth, she literally smashed the moth RIGHT ABOVE MY HEAD. omg. that was so terrifying. and she says, "now its dead". Got some powders of that poor moth on my jacket but hey at least she helped. I tried not to ruin my mood and others over this rude waitress. But when we paid, she brought our checks, dropped on our table very harshly and said I owe her a couple of bucks. I used my prepaid card that didnt have enough balance. So she had to come back and get the rest of the balance. She seemed very annoyed and just didnt want to serve us anymore. I really didnt want to leave any tips for this BS service but hopping that I never get this waitress ever again, I did give her 20% tips. I would still come back here but if I get this waitress, I will totally demand for a different server. So disappointing and the manager needs to pay more attention to individual waitresss personality and if they like the work there.

If you are someone wanting to eat brunch with your dog and/or order brunch to-go, this is NOT the place for you. We were excited for brunch this morning and drove all the way from Irwin with our dog just to find out that they didnt allow dogs in their outdoor patio. They explained that its a city-wide rule since they have an elevated patio, which is understandable. We left to look for another place to eat, but decided to come back a few minutes later to just order brunch to-go. As we asked for a menu, they told us they do not do brunch to-go. What kind of place doesnt offer food to-go?! It cant be that hard to just place food in a box and hand it to us. Probably requires less effort than actually serving us at a table. This "attempted" trip coupled with my previous trip in which I waited over an hour for their highly average Delmonico A Go Go sandwich will definitely keep me from ever trying to eat here again.

The Harris Grille provides a relaxing and trendy setting. The service staff are very hip and interesting. They also have a large patio with ample outdoor seating. However, the food is not very good given the price. The drinks are very expensive, as well. I tried one of their Cajun chicken dishes once, and the chicken was overcooked and over-spiced. My Dads fish Taco dish had very good quality fish, but the rest of the ingredient were bland and greasy. The drink I ordered was one of their many odd Martins, and with a price over $9 for a mediocre mixed drink, I was actually appalled at how popular this place seems. Overall, if you enjoy trendy hang outs and you have plenty of money to kill, you might enjoy this place. Otherwise, youll be seeing me at a more authentic, "mom-and-pop" hangout with good music and friendlier people.

Food was good but unprofessional server. She didnt bring back correct change, kept .52 cents. I mentioned it and daid the change you didnt bring me is part of your tip. She said most people dont care!! They leave it as part of the tip. Tipping is OPTIONAL!!. Not her or mgt decision to make. They were also out of the beer I wanted& the sandwich I wanted at 2:30 . Didnt offer anything with chili, no crackers etc. Asked for takeout container to put chili in. She brought me a container but no spoon. I had to pour it in, same with other app. I ordered gazpacho to go. Wasnt even a cup in the too go container. Server needs to stfu. Perhaps 3 was too high a rating. She really irked me throughout.

It was cleanish and the bar staff was decent. Several of them were very polite. There was just something about the place that seemed like it wasnt running smooth. Even with about half of the bar full, the staff still seemed to be running around and unorganized. The rest of the place was basically empty and this was a Friday night around midnight. Ive heard the happy hour specials are the way to go but unfortunately I wasnt there during that time. Also, while this may be a pet peeve of mine, the tip I wrote in was not correct when it posted to my CC. It was larger and I just dont like that at all. I wont pursue the business but it definitely made me a little angry.
