Life of Pie specializes in wood-fired pizzas. The 11 inch pizza pies are topped with housemade and/or locally sourced seasonal ingredients, such as their homemade mozzarella which we saw being made right then and there at the event, or the mushrooms from the Farmers Market, Carlton Farms applewood smoked bacon, Chop salami and Mama Lils Peppers. They have 8 pizzas on their menu ranging from $9-12. They also offer a menu of toppings, so those 16 ingredients can be used to mix it up to your liking. My favorite of the 4 pizzas I tried was the Seasonal Mushroom pizza covered in chanterelles and shitake mushrooms and finished with shaved pecorino romano and truffle oil. Also sampled were the Carlton Farms applewood smoked bacon layered with oven-roasted leeks, goat cheese and caramelized onions- and I loved those oven-roasted leeks; the Fennel Sausage kicked up your average sausage pizza with Mama Lils Peppers and offered a great pairing of spicy with a sauce so good I could imagine drinking it. Also check out that classic Margherita with Mozzarella, Tomato, and Fresh Basil whose leaf color slowly just darkening from the pizza heat testifies to its freshness. The Aracini, risotto croquettes with ricotta and mozzarella, was a perfect balance of oozy and crisp. Then there was Life of Pies surprise right hook: Kale & Arugula with parmesan and honey lemon vinaigrette packed an addictive punch with its light dressing that enhanced the kale and arugula and the parmesan to add texture like a breadcrumb topping of a mac and cheese- but all over your salad! I would **highly recommend** this salad. It is a very crave-able salad.

8/28/2016: We decided to try this place out because they posted on their Facebook that "Cacio e Pepe" was their current pasta special. We just visited Italy this past April and ate a lot of Cacio e Pepe while in Rome, including the restaurant featured on Anthony Bourdain for this pasta dish. My husband and I both agreed as we ate the pasta plate in less than 2 minutes that it was tastier than the one featured on ABs show and many other restaurants we ate this dish at in Rome. The spaghetti pasta had that perfect chewy texture with just the right amount of Pecorino Romano & Parmesan cheese that wasnt overly thick and creamy. The amount of black pepper gave the dish that perfect bite that folks who like spicy food likes. Highly recommend this pasta special before it ends! Also, we had their appetizer meatball dish. Yum! Our 4.5 yr old loved it. Oh yeah, the pizzas were delicious as well. We ordered 3 and ate 2.5 of them because we were so full from the pasta and meatballs. We will definitely come back mainly to have our fill of Cacio e Pepe before they stop making them...and the meatballs, and the pizzas, if we still have room.

08/12/17: 4.5 out of 5 - Its been awhile since my last review of Life of Pi, but I have been coming here often. I cant complain. The place is fantastic! If anything, its the waiting for tables at times, but other than that, its just fantastic! 07/03/16: 5 out of 5 - Asked my mother-in-law where she would like to eat and she immediately picked Life of Pi. Came in at 9pm and the place was busy! But, guess what? The staff still provided exceptional service with a big smile. Its only obvious well be back for more. 06/15/16: 5 out of 5 - Life of Pi has not failed me. Such exceptional pizzas! 05/05/16: 5 out of 5 - Came back from NYC and we wanted to eat here. This place is still tops (5-Stars) for my wife and I. 04/26/16: 5 out of 5 - Ever since this place opened, Ive been a fan that hits up Life of Pie at least once every two weeks, and I live in Milwaukie! Im not much a salad guy, but I do enjoy their Kale & Arugula salad. Its definitely a must try if youre in the area. I know Ill be coming back. Definitely try it once and decide for yourself.

"The Lie Of Pie" Does this place actually serve pizza? Im not sure it does. First attempt... we went here an hour before closing on a Sunday - they were out of dough. So, no pizza. No big. We were bummed, but hey. It was late, and not unreasonable. We knew this might happen, so well try again. So Monday. Try it again. Early this time. 1:00PM. And... They are out of dough. "We still have our pastas though!" Folks. Youre a pizza place. You run out of dough before lunch is finished? You may need to rethink something. For us, there probably wont be a third attempt... And if you decide to visit this place, I would definitely recommend calling ahead to check the dough levels. Maybe make a reservation or something. I dunno... Maybe you can put down a deposit on some dough? Hopworks is just down the street though. They serve pizza. And beer. And have dough. And if LOP hadnt run out of dough, we probably wouldnt have found them, so Im giving them an extra star for that...

I went to Life of Pie for the first time 6 months ago and since then have been a frequent visitor, having made over a dozen trips,I drive 16 miles one way from Vancouver for the pleasure of dining there,. I am into healthy cooking and can tell easily if the ingredients are of high or organic quality,I myself grow vegetables as I live on a mini fruit farm . I have traveled very extensively all over Europe including Italy and this place is one of nicest places I have visited, and I go to Europe a at least 6 times a year ,, I am particularly impressed by the friendliness of the employees at LOPie and also feel that it is very good value for the money,Their happy hour menu is a WINNER. Thanks for all the great and friendly people who work there. I frequent ONLY 2 restaurants in Portland as I dont eat out much as I enjoy cooking myself and this is one of the only 2 I visit,

Their $5 Margherita pizza happy hour deal is the best!!! I even pay $10 for pizza if I want to add other toppings, the pizza is pretty good so I dont mind at all. The Arancini are tasty, not my favorite because theyre too wet to my taste, I prefer risotto to be less pureed, but it has a good flavor. The Meatballs are delicious, very flavorful, as well as the Roasted Cauliflower, YOU MUST ORDER THE CAULIFLOWER, its a simple dish but so good. Their salads are refreshing, good portions and the only one I havent tried is the Kale one, NEXT.. This place beats many pizzerias in the area just for the fact that theyre equally delicious, decent prize, and they open at 11 am!!!! not like at 5pm like other places >_< Highly recommended :D

This place is middle of the road. It tastes like they use quality ingredients. The pies look appetizing, and to a certain degree they are. However, the crust needs more crispiness, as its a bit too rubbery. There was also little too much char on bottom of pizzas, leading me to assume that they are not keeping the oven hot enough to cook true brick oven pizza. See pic I posted. The margarita pizza is very mediocre. The mushroom/mozzarella/truffle oil pie is good, aside from previously mentioned concerns. We ordered two pies on a very slow night, and still had to wait about 20 minutes, though brick oven pizza takes 90 seconds to cook. Price: a bit overpriced
