As far as 24 hour coffee shops go in Portland...this is one of the few (if only) I can even think of. For a city enamored with coffee youd think there would be more options for a place to sit on your phone or computer and enjoy some late night bean juice, but really, there arent many options. Maybe its for that reason but its made me look favorably upon Southeast Grind (even though if it was only open during more "normal" hours I wouldnt really consider going there compared to other cafe/coffee shop options). The location isnt bad though its not really what I would call that close to anything...its across the street from another 24 hour subway so if youre hungry you can cross and get a sub, but its not really located around anything else of note. The coffee and drink selection is nice, but the staff can be a bit...stiff? Or maybe the right word is blasé. Either way, Ive never felt "cool" enough or all that welcome upon ordering here (though no one was mean or condescending, just a bit indifferent). There is a "VIP" section that I guess members only get to sit in, which sounds a bit funny but makes more sense upon entering at 1am and finding next to no available places to sit. With so many people wanting to stay up late and work/drink coffee/talk, you might think another place would do well to stay open late but until that happens it stays pretty busy/packed at late hours at Southeast Grind. If you find yourself needing to stay up and get out of your room/house/whatever, its not a bad place to spend an evening until the sun comes up (and you can hop to a different place.)

The Pros: The staff is friendly and helpful. There is a wide variety of food offered. They even have vegan, gluten-free, and organic options. They serve kombucha. They have innovative coffee drinks. My favorite is the Night Rider. They are open 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Free wi-fi. The Cons: It fills up fast past 6pm, due to the awesome service, wi-fi access and hours. The music tends to be loud sometimes. Make sure to bring earplugs or headphones. You may not get a table and/or outlet at times. But, this is only when the place is packed (like during midterms, etc). Gender-specific bathrooms. Good to Know: The flow of customers varies. Students tend to fill the place up past 6pm. It can get loud. This only applies when schools are in session. During the day, its nice and peaceful. Parking can be a problem. If youre OK with parking a block or 2 away, youll be fine.

The food selection is excellent, as well as teas, juice, and smoothies. Coffee currently from Marigold and is a bit on the light side for my taste, very distinctive flavor which can be a love or hate situation. Always open, which is GREAT! However, the baristas almost always (these days) provide lackluster service or prepare espresso/steam milk poorly, which is a star off the review. The other star is off for prices, which are high even by specialty standards, probably to offset operating costs of being 24hr. The veggie bagel is THE cheapest and best in town, though. Access is limited for cars due to small lot and business abutting Powell Blvd, but it sits right off the 12th and Clinton max stop and 4 major bus lines. There is rotating art which is frequently awesome, too! Bottom line: Go at hours other shops arent open and get a veggie bagel/house coffee to receive the best value.

They have a problem with accusing people of doing heroin in the back room kind of a private room and open all night which I am taking advantage of cuz homeless and suffer from MS so no immune system makes shelters a dangerous place plus dont wanna be around drug addicts at all.. they eluded that they will post a sign for the back room $5 mim purchase or no use of this room.. heroin users have $5 so dont really get it .. it is drama .. but other than that I really like it .. need to stay out of cold weather during this horrible freeze not usually seen here in PDX .. not sure who is leaving needles in this room but I dint use them so It wasnt me!! SE GRIND be careful being accused of using drugs when I am trying to survive deadly weather suffering from MS is not a good idea for you.

They have blended yummy smoothies and gf goodies, but it sucks they dont have extension cords or enough comfy seating close to outlets. I was disabled from a car accident and have back pain so cant sit on hard seats. Last time i was here, there was a cord. Idk i guess i wont be coming back to do homework. :( as for the environment, the seating is kinda old but thats ok for me. It can vary between slow to busy. They usually have nice or fun music playing. Not the best for studying, unless you can study in those conditions. Not quite loud enough to have a social hour with a friend either, tho...unless it is full of others being social. Still, its my go to for when im hungry late at night.

Interesting specialty drinks (I had the Dirty Lady) but a run down look & feel had thinking twice before staying for a sip. Glad I did, as into my 4th sip I caught a chunk of .. Something.. Betwixt my lips. The kind lady didnt hesitate to grab that chunk of obscure matter to inspect it closely, finally determining it was food. She quickly made me a new one. The open lounge seating is a nice touch, but it looks as if everything was sourced from a junkyard - most thrift stores wouldnt sell such worn items. Interesting drinks & great customer service just doesnt make up for a shoddy space & finding food in my coffee. Caveat emptor

I love this place, I love the staff, I love the fare, and I will continue coming here for probably as long as Im in Portland. However, Ive had my drinks forgotten just a few too many times to rate it a five star (Subject to change if they keep being on top of it as they have lately). They have an awesome assortment of food which, especially for a 24-hour joint, is pretty healthy. And they have a great selection of gluten-free items for my partner. But really, I have a special place in my heart for anything open late into the night, and this has been a night owls home away from home for as long as Ive been in Portland.

At one point this was the closest coffee place to my home so I decided to check it out. First time had great service and they made a great Stumptown based latte, even threw in the fourth shot for free. After my first experience I went back excited about finding a decent coffee shop nearby and was disappointed to find a completely different experience. Service was aloof and they forgot to put the flavor which I had asked for in my coffee. Thinking that maybe I had just come on the wrong day I tried again, but after getting the wrong drink again I decided that this place was not going to become my local fave.

I love this place for its free wifi and the food is decent but the problem is that the food is not filling enough and they overcharge. They are usually pretty good with food modifications if you have allergies but there was one time they messed up and I had to rip my sandwich apart to take out the things that I couldnt eat. The drinks are great but expensive as well. The staff is usually pretty friendly depending on whos there and the atmosphere is great most of the time. Its a good place to go for hours (open 24 hours) to just chill out as long as you dont fall asleep there.
