If I could give ZERO stars I would. Health Department Nightmare. The following is NOT an exaggeration, as with some reviews. I have been to Kurama many times in the past and loved it. NOT TONIGHT. We were sat in the far left room of the building at the very last table on the left. (I cannot speak of the other side of the building). In this room, the air ventilation was horrible. It did not work at all at our table, and the smoke was having to be sucked up by the vents at the nearby tables. This was very ineffective, so much smoke was billowing around us that it was making me sick. My daughter also frequently got up from the table. I had to sit in the waiting room until the food was finished cooking. In reality the entire rooms ventilation was warped but not completely defunct like my table. I complained to the manager and he acted like "Okay, so? What do you want me to do about it." He also mentioned that the smoke was blowing more in another customers face and he wasnt complaining. I told him "If it was blowing in my face like his, I would have got up and left the restaurant. Secondly, if I am complaining its because I have a problem I want you to address, not diminish based on someone elses inability to stick up for what is right." I had to ask him to discount my part of the bill off. You go to a hibachi restaurant for the experience with friends and family, not the food and I think that more should have been taken off the bill since the entire experience was ruined. Not to mention, even to get him to discount my portion was like pulling teeth. After leaving the restaurant we immediately had to go shower because we smelled like a campfire. We showered immediately before going and I had to go straight home and put my clothes in the washer and my whole family had to shower as soon as we walked in the door. Our skin is greasy. Its disgusting. And yes sometimes when you go to a Hibachi restaurant you smell like the food...but NOT smoke. I am convinced that if my asthmatic sister would have joined us, wed be in the ER right now. The fact that the manager feels like some lucky customer was worse is ridiculously poor customer service. My husband also saw a leak with potential mold in the room. We are contacting the Health Department to inspect both the leak and the ventilation systems because they were that poor and it is a true Health concern. If you go there do not sit in that room when they are busy. You will have to cancel your plans due to the smell and/or health risks you are incurring.

I went to Kuramas for a friends birthday and I can honestly say I will NEVER return! The service was amongst the worst I have ever experienced. Our server paid no attention to our table the entire night. When he brought our drinks, he interrupted our conversations to ask who ordered which drink (I know this server has been working there a long time so Im not sure why he isnt able to remember a simple drink order). He made several errors with the drink order. The only redeming part of the night was our chef. He did a great job and I feel bad that his job is negatively affected by the server. Our server paid so little attention to our table that a member of our party had to retrieve the water pitcher himself to refill his drink. We asked for coke, we got sweet tea. We asked for a sushi menu and chop stix, never received them. At the end of our dinner, my boyfriend paid for our bill in cash and the server did the most RUDE thing ever. He counted out the cash at the table, right in front of us! As if he was implying that we would have shorted him on the bill! I have never heard of that kind of behavior! I am seriously disappointed that we had such an awful experience at such a high price. Service was worse than McDonalds but prices reflect fine dining! I will be sure to spread the word about this place and make sure no one else has to deal with this RUDE and UNACCEPTABLE service!!

This place is legitimately terrible. I took my mom here for MOTHERS DAY, yeah, embarrassing, and the service was very very poor - they didnt care where you sat, didnt walk you to your table, didnt check on how the food was (it was terrible, worst sushi i have ever tasted). The sanitation score is 91 and normally im like, okay, sometimes health inspectors can go overboard. no. this place completely earned its 91, im surprised it wasnt less. The decor hasnt been changed since what seems like the day it was built....if it was built in the 70s. the bathroom stall doors hang off their hinges. the sushi is NOT FRESH. it gave me a stomach ache. and the worst part - it is RIDICULOUSLY overpriced. $13 for a 6-8 piece roll that is mediocre at its VERY BEST? get out of here. do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs.

This is my 4th time coming here and my fiance has been coming since 200t. wish I would have rated back then bc it was so much better. My fiance and I always share our meal, hibachi steak and chicken and always gets portions enough for eating a single meal a piece. For some reason we come to night, the chef messes up his trick and about hits a child with his spatula. Then on top of it he hardly gives us any servings...the couple in front of us paid for the same meal with 2 adults and 2 children but their portions are for kings!!! Please request not to have

I went to kurama for take out. Two plates was 42.00 and some change. I ask for one (1) extra white sauce and was told it would cost another dollar. I was told since the economy was bad I would have to buy extra. If I was to eat inside it would be free all day long. They lost 4 customers that day. We were regulars because the food is very good. I had come from Burlington NC just to get their food and what poor customer service I received. I will Never give them my money again. I will be going to Greensboro NC for Japanese Food.

Not a shred of authenticity. Im always very Leary of a "Japanese" restaurant with no Asian employees. Decor was depressing, between the tacky mirrors, stain marks on the ceiling tiles and 1980s basement style and crappy tile tables it sucked. Actually smelled like and indoor pool when we walked in. You get a lot of food unfortunately its primarily zucchini and sprouts. Every single item we ate was over "seasoned" with salt/ soy sauce. I like salty food but this was like I just ate a salt lick. Very disappointed.

I was traveling through Durham, and happened to chance upon Kurama. The ambience is very nice, the sushi chefs were trained in Japan, and the food is terrific! I went at 9:15 pm (they close at 10), so the restaurant was not that busy, and I got immediate attention and service. Pricing is a bit on the high side, but totally commensurate with the food/ambience/service. For out of towners craving sushi - must try. For locals, you dont know what youre missing!
