Tonight my husband and I took an out of town friend, Sam, to Toyama, and had the most bizarre experience... Sams order was brought out to her with a side of spring rolls, and without the carrots that usually accompany it. The restaurant was fairly busy and there was a line, so we shrugged it off, and ate one of the spring rolls. About fifteen minutes later, a server came out and berated us for not returning the spring rolls to the kitchen. Sam explained that she hadnt been there before and didnt know the spring rolls werent included with her meal; the server repeatedly insisted that we pay for the spring rolls she hadnt ordered. We refused. The server then snatched up the remaining spring roll (with a bite missing) and stormed off. But she wasnt done with us yet! The same server returned soon after to continue bullying Sam to pay for the spring rolls. Again Sam refused and asked to speak to a manager (conveniently not in tonight.) The server scolded that because of our "dishonesty," another angry customer inside had not received their order. Choosing not to comment on the fact that we were not responsible for the kitchen correctly filling other customers orders, I reminded the server that even if Sam returned the spring rolls, it would not have been food safe for them to serve the food she had touched to someone else. To the amusement of the other diners around us, the server continued to argue her point, ending by saying that "next time" we should do the honest thing and return the food that had been mistakenly brought to us. There wont be a next time after the incredibly strange, rude way we were treated. Its a shame; we like the food and have gone to Toyama fairly often -- but there are plenty of other restaurants in town that will not harass their customers for a mistake made by the kitchen. P.S. Two spring rolls cost $2.60.

This is my second time going there. The first time was not good but it was really crowded so I thought Id give it a second chance and order the same meal (for comparison) during a less busy time. Well, busy or not, it does not matter. The cashiers and waiters were nice and seemed to know what they are doing, but is that really why people go to restaurants? No. They go for the food initially. I ordered the Hibachi Chicken to go. I got back to my desk ready to eat and upon opening the container I am hit with a burnt rice smell.... well i think maybe its from the grilled chicken. NO! I taste the rice and it is hard and taste over cooked. I tried smothering it in ginger sauce, this does not help. The carrots portion is probably 1/3 of what I saw on dine-in plates. The chicken just as dry as the first time I ordered. I will not return. If anyone is looking for a good spot check out Niyo near David Cox Rd (by the post office & Jasons Deli). I tried them 3 times and have yet to be disappointed with the hibachi chicken.

This play is okay. Nothing more, nothing less. Just okay. The prices are cheap so I wont complain. The rice could be better, but the meals are cheap so I dont expect much from here. My biggest complaint is the shrimp sauce/white sauce. I pay 6.39 for a meal and I have no problem with that... but to get another sauce it costs an entire extra dollar. ... my meal was 6.39 and the sauce is 1.00...? The sauce shouldnt make up 15% of the cost of a meal. Will I come back here? Probably. Will I complain about the cost of the sauce again? Probably. I recommend this place If youre looking for a quick takeout Japanese meal. The service is fast and the food is good for what it costs. Just dont plan to get an extra white sauce if you come here.

Ive been eating toyamas since I moved here TEN years ago. The staff that work the front registers are by far the rudest staff Ive seen so far ... I love this restaurant, I would give the food 10 stars if I could. But I dread even having to interact with the front staff at the registers... I even order to go to try and avoid the attitude and dirty looks, but tonight proved me wrong again. Still was treated with disrespect.. beware of the staff... if you guys take any of your reviews serious please consider this one and get some new staff that want to be kind to your customers. It really says a lot about the place on who they hire to be the faces you see right when you walk in... disappointed.

The worst cashier ever working register. I believe his name is Paul. He was extremely rude to us when we came into buy lunch. He was very sarcastic and condescending. He thought that being rude to customers was acceptable. Apparently it is because when I asked for a manager all they did was look at us like we did something wrong. I will never come back to this place again!! There needs to be a better management staff and Paul ( if that is his name) needs to get it together or find a new job! If my friends EVER ask me about this place I will make sure I tell them do NOT spend your money here because youll get treated terribly!!!

At the begining,I really enjoyed their food. It was quick(still is) and delicious. But after many more times I always end up leaving unstatisfied even upset(bc the meat sometimes taste very swollen, and that is no excuse for a place that is always busy). I now refuse to go here only because I had ordered the ck wings combo and when I got home it was the ck teryiaki w/ mix veggie combo. I called the rest. to report that my order was wrong. and all I got as an answer was "Sorry Mam we are closed bye.....rrrrrr(phone hung up)" so as a customers I felt like this was a slap in the face. so "FU TOYAMO!"

This is probably one of the best Japanese places around the University City area. Service is fast and friendly whether you are dining in or taking out. If it were not for the price per plate being around $8.00 I would probably be eating here as much as I do Cookout - luckily for me, thats not the case. But the price is accurately proportional to the quality of food they provide. I usually get the same thing everytime I go there, but you cant go wrong with the hibachi or teriyaki plates. This is a great place for a quick bite or for meeting up with friends.

Where do I even start? I was a lost little boy when I first found Toyo. Depleted of confidence and self worth because of lack of nutrition. Toyo picked my up off my knees and hugged me in her big hibachi arms. When I say this is more than a restaurant, it is a place of healing, a place of God. I mean it. I feel like there must be some combination of words I can use to convey the type of establishment this is, but I cannot find them. You must go for yourself. I owe my life to Toyo. You have my undying loyalty and love.

You cannot beat this place if you are looking for great Japanese food! Except they do not serve sushi, however, it doesnt change the fact that even compared to those "higher-end" Japanese restaurants, with a real hibachi grill that put on a show in front of you, Toyama is definitely the best! And talk about fast! I hardly have time to get my drink and sit down before my food is ready (even when crowded you wont wait more than 4 minutes, literally.) The Pricing is excellent too!
