I recently gave this place five stars before i even went in because its definitely needed and these things bring recognition. However, I have to put that aside and be honest here. I have an awful experience at this place. First off the girl who was working the register was very rude. Dyed blonde like hair with a nose ring. During the time i was there, i thanked her several times and she never responded once to the gesture. The place is small, the girl never asked how anyone was doing or anything as if it was beneath her to provide decent customer service. It was real cringe. Second was evidently the cook. I ordered the chicken philly, and it was tasty but it was hard to enjoy because there were big grisle chunks all in the sandwich, i mean you could choke on these chunks. Second there were very stale parts of apparently old or recooked chicken in the sandwich. third they did not sale cake but that would be excused had the other two been in check. I mean up and coming places have to realize you are competing for CUSTOMERS and that requires good service. Not the only cafe in town. Not sureif i will come back

I love little neighborhood places. They always come with a special sense of ownership and often with amazing food. I had high hopes for Urban Cafe that were sadly dashed at first bite. The vibe of the place is definitely for the vegan/gluten free crowd, however they still have a few carnivorous options for the rest of us. I went with the pork belly sandwich that I had high hopes for and was left underwhelmed. The pork is not seasoned at all leaving the fat in the pork belly cut to taste like gelatinous nothing. Topped with coleslaw that is obviously fresh with a delightful crunch, it also lacks flavor as there is a very light hint of vinegar, but thats all. In the end, the result was fresh ingredients that fell flat on their face.

I cannot stress enough how surprised I was at the hip neighborhood ambience, small yet scrumptious menu packed with healthy options. On my first visit I had the brisket which was absolutely yummy, but yesterday they were out of the brisket, by the time I arrived. I took a chance and had the pork belly. I truly do not eat much pork, but this sandwich, which they put in a wrap for me was better than the brisket! The pork belly wrap was served the perfect temperature, had just the right amount of Urban Cafe created condiments and ASIAN SLAW! The chocolate smoothie bowl with fresh fruit, quinoa, almond slivers, crunchy granola or oats of something was DYNAMITE!! Drive from wherever you have to to try this soon to be local favorite!

REALLY YUMMY! Chicken salad and Balsamic Veggie sandwiches were gone moments after these photos were taken, and the coffee was wonderful, too. (really generous coffee portion sizes too, unlike some of the KCs "hip" coffee joints) Staff was so friendly, just a husband and wife working together! The space is in its young stages, could use a couch nestled against the nice big windows or a few more small tables for couples, and personally I dont prefer TVs. But, for a business thats within walking distance of my house, I cant complain! More places like this in east midtown! Reminds me of Yo Mamas in Birmingham, AL.

Maybe some might think it seems weird for a white guy to say folks in the area need to support black owned business and keep their dollars in the community but here there should be no confusion or contest. The food is fresh, the flavors unique, and the space a revitalization of one of so many amazing spaces along Troost that have sat vacant for too long. If you live in Hyde Park make this a regular part of your day either for the excellent sandwiches for breakfast and lunch or the great coffee based drinks to choose from and if youre just in the area its worth stopping in.

Fantastic, fresh, AND locally sourced ingredients!? Chef Justin delivers with delicious Vegan chickpea lettuce cup tacos. I would happily eat those every day. Also tried the balsamic veggies in a wrap, the sweet potato was a crazy delicious (and healthy) substitute for a more traditional spread. Loved it! Cant wait to go back; definitely recommend :)

Urban Cafe is a really pleasant surprise. Theyre open early enough that I can get breakfast on my way to work, the decor is very tasteful and unique, and the food is great. I especially enjoyed the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on raisin bread. The staff is really friendly too. Ill definitely be back.

Enjoying the bacon, egg, and cheese on raisin bread! Breakfast menu is small, but they have a good selection of devices that are available too. I look forward to trying them! They also have some grab & go options which look delicious. I hope they succeed here, as we need places like this in the area.

"Whoa! That Was Damn Good!" is exactly what I told the owner/chef. Very small quirky local place with not much seating. Be prepared to wait a little even after you order at the counter. Food is individually prepared and is delicious. My beautiful wife loved the coffee and said I should mention it.

Just had Urban Cafe catered for a lunch discussion and panel. AMAZING chick pea and quinoa wrap. Cant wait to visit this location in person. I love the integration of fresh, organic foods, revitalizing disenfranchised neighborhoods and supporting black-owned businesses.

We had the recommended pork belly sandwich. The price was more than the website states and the item was sooo tough, chewy, and flavorless. Pork belly shouldnt be so chewy and fatty. The only reason we would try again is to support local business.

I had the Balsmamic Veggie Wrap today, first time there. It was delicious. Sweet potatoes, Salad greens, and cheese (its better described on their chalkboard menu). Highly recommend this place. Affordable, Tasty, and Local.
