Northfield is a great little hideaway of a town, and buried down in the lower level of an old riverfront hotel is The Tavern. Youll feel like you are trying to find some secret hideout as you twist and turn through narrow hallways and staircases (watch your head, Im 63"). Rumor has it that part of this place was a speakeasy back when you purposely wanted to hide out. We had the Thai pasta, which was surprisingly spicy for a "good Lutheran town" like this, and the chicken fontinella (lightly breaded, with ham, chesse, and a great spinach/artichoke combo, on sauced pasta), kids spaghetti, and the "Granny Smith" appetizer plate. Everything seemed to be made from scratch, and was delicious and reasonably priced. The interior is fine, but in the warm months you should opt for the limited riverfront patio seating. Its nothing elegant, but it still makes for a pleasant experience.

Something Awesome
When I first was brought to the Tavern of Northfield I was at first amazed. They had a breakfast special that was delicious and cheap. I continued to go on a regular bases after that and was always satisfied. The service was never anything to special but the job got done. Now, that said, I have stopped going there all together. I was blinded by the cheap amazing breakfast specials and overlooked one important thing. The place was gross. Dust and webs everywhere. Dead bugs laying on the floor and in the webs. Dust piled high. As I started to pay attention I began to notice just how dirty the place was. If the Tavern is cleaned up and maintained I highly suggest it but until then I just cant.

My wife and I ate at the Tavern last week. To truly enjoy your visit you need to bring window cleaner, a flyswatter and dust cloth. It is truly disgusting. The quaint atmosphere is overpowered by the flies, dirt and grunge on the windows. Window blinds have such a thick coating of dust that they appear a different color! The food was acceptable but my potatoes had an overwhelming amount of rosemary. The staff needs to put in some hours cleaning before we venture back and hopefully not have to chase flies off our food for the entire meal.

Ive become very disappointed with this place, it was once a great destination where you can sit and have a nice meal in a cozy atmosphere. Now its dusty with a lot of cobwebs hanging off of the lights, the service is average, and the food isnt that great. I had desert there one evening and ordered the carrot cake, what I got was a dry cold lump cake slathered in frosting. Again very dissapointed cause I know they were much better at one point.

Had a very disappointing dinner last night. My daughter ordered the Canadian Walleye which was under-cooked and tasted like it was found dead on the shore. Not impressed for an $18.50 entree. The beef in my bovine sandwich was flavorless - also disappointing. Side dish of coleslaw was good after I added salt to make it more tasty. Odd because I rarely add salt to my food. Nice ambiance but food was totally sub-par.

Service can be questionable depending on who you get, once waited 24mins just to be greeted at the table :( but usually great! The food is wonderfully priced and never disappoints. The upstairs bar is usually an older crowd and carries a nice beer selection with their limited taps. Breakfast is dynamite and the patio is wonderful. One of my favorite spots for sure. Ask for Susie or Carrie.

The Tavern has some good food but is a little weird to get to. The service can be hit and miss, however. Sometimes its super fast and super great service and sometimes it feels like the serving staff are too busy with nothing to do to pay attention to their tables. Its a Northfield institution though, so if youre in town you should visit. The food is usually very, very good.

This place has been serving great breakfasts sincebefore i was in high school (2000 graduate) for under 5bucks. 2eggs, 2giant pieces of toast, your choice of meat, hash browns and fresh fruit for under 5 dollars. Food is great! Building is really neat, super old, lots of history. Dont miss out cuz the dinner menu isnt cheap :-)

I love going to The Tavern for breakfast! I had the $5 french toast, and an English muffin this morning, and I am stuffed! 3 huge slices of Texas toast in a beautiful eggy and cinnamon batter. Its a typical small town eatery, quaint, small, and wonderful atmosphere. Its a local favorite.

I love this place. I eat here whenever Im in Northfield. Its quiet and unpretentious. They play within their game. Its simple food everything made from scratch which I appreciate. I like their breakfast and the $15.00 prime rib on Saturdays. Cooked to perfection.

Went to their Tavern Lounge. Happy Hour 1/2 price drinks and the 1/2 price appetizers are wonderful. Nice place to hang out after a stressful day. Sometimes theres even music. We also like the Tavern of Northfield Restaurant. Always enjoy the atmosphere and food.

You may have to wait to be seated and helped fairly often, but no matter what meal you come here for, youll have a great tasting menu selection. The building is named accordingly, with a very intriguing vintage vibe.

Ate on the patio which was kind of crowded and less than spectacular because it over looks the parking lot. Quaint old building with rich history. Menu was par for a "good" restaurant. Lots to chose from. OK staff.

Party of 3 for dinner - 2 orders for the 10 oz sirloin and 1 for 8 oz fillet. Steaks were all disappointing. Salads were fine. Garlic mashed potatoes definitely better than the pan-fried house red potatoes.

Such a great find! The basement restaurant had a European feel thats not found often in America. Breakfast portions were huge for cheap price and the staff was very nice! Cant wait to come back for supper!

Best option in northfield. Every other place nearby is disappointing, far more than the tavern. Half priced appetizers on tues is a great deal, just wish they had a better happy hour on the weekend.

Made from scratch menu. I had the cajun chicken sandwich, my sister-in-law had the chicken stew and salad. The bread pudding was so good. Prices are reasonable. Cool place.

I love The Tavern, my family has had my bday party there for 2 years now. This place is intimate and interesting. The food is great, atmosphere is unique and charming.

A weird, basementy place. It takes a questing party to find the restrooms or your server, if its busy. The sandwiches were mediocre. The highlight was the "tavern fries".

A great place to eat in Northfield, home cooked meals, more food than you can eat, great sevice, and just a cute place like no other place you have ever eaten at.

Good food. Strange seating rules. Dont even think of sitting at the big table unless you have all six people with you. Have five in your group? Go somewhere else.

Not the most exciting food ever, but big portions and a nice atmosphere make this worth it for a dinner (or lunch or breakfast) out.

Good food and service. Although last time we were there the service was poor. Will go back just hope we dont have the same server.
