My husband and I dined here on a Sunday during brunch time. There was a short wait, but we expected that. The waitress was nice but I could tell she was slammed with tables. About 10 minutes after we got seated, it started clearing out. I ordered a simple plate from the menu. Our food came out, and there was cheese on my hash browns, which I did not order. I asked the food runner kindly if they would bring me hash browns with no cheese. She scoffed at me and said "here just give me your plate," and grabbed it with fork still in some eggs. I sat without food for 10 minutes and when my plate arrived, my husband was half-finished with his. The food runner didnt say anything, and as I looked at my plate I realized she hadnt brought a fork, so I asked (again kindly) for another. The food runner scoffed a second time and said "yeah give me a minute". 5 minutes later, I sat waiting still with no fork. I gave up and began to eat hash browns and ham with a spoon until I could flag our waitress down. She brought a spoon and offered a refill on my drink, to which I accepted. Another 10 minutes later, my husband and I are finished and walking up to the register to pay when the same food runner said "Didnt you want another drink?!" I was not rude, but simply stated "Not anymore thanks, were finished and leaving." as I walked by, I saw an angry look on the runners face. The food runner asked the table next to us if they wanted my refill, and the woman dining next to us was taken aback and started to say no thank you, but the runner put it down on her table despite this. Im not pleased with the kitchen or the staff, with the exception of our great waitress who happened to be very busy.

Horrible service. (Id give it less than 1 star if possible) We stopped going there because of really bad service--then my uncle came to town and told us to meet him there. We warned him but he said he "likes Village Inns". So we got there. There were only 2 tables in the whole place occupied. Our waitress just had us. When she took our order my uncle asked for eggs over easy with an extra egg. My order did not have potatoes. She asked what kind I wanted- I told her it says it doesnt come with them. She looked at me like she was scared? Then the order came- egg was hard- no 2nd egg, my plate had hash browns- we asked for some napkins. She didnt come back. Finally another girl came over after 20 min. My uncle asked if our waitress quit- she said No she just went on break. Wow. While we were her only table she decided to go on break?? She never did come back or bring the napkins. Then when we were done we Got up to leave and stood by the cash register forever. She saw us and continued to wander around the restaurant. My uncle finally started yelling. Another girl finally came to take our money. It was noon by then and there was a total of 6 people there. That alone should tell you something. I will never go back again. Its now a big joke with my uncle. He realizes he should have listened to us. As I had this happen to me before. Really bad service.

Waitress was forgetting to bring items to every table she served including ours. Multple tables made comments about it. One table sent food back multiple times because she couldnt get it ordered right. She did not know how much it would be to substitute an item and wouldnt check to see how much. She never refilled our drinks. She forgot to bring bowl of fruit and toast. She made a bad joke about having to find the toast in storage. When the toast finally made it to the table one slice had not been buttred and the other slice and a small strip of butter that we laughed at. Honestly how hard is it to butter bread. I ordered VIB items. My country fried steak was terrible. It was burnt and I could barely cut through it. My starberry crepes were waxy and raw in the middle and the edges were crunchy. My wife got her bowl of fruit with 4 tiny pieces of fruit in it. Not like the overflowing bowl on the pictures. I wasted $21 at your restaurant tonight but that will be a mistake I will never make again. I dont know what to even tell you to focus on since every aspect of our experience was rotten. Sorry to be so harsh but I feel like I was abused and ripped off tonight

I ordered a breakfast off of the gluten sensitive menu (I have celiac disease). It was supposed to be 2 slices bacon, 2 link sausage and a ham steak along with eggs and hash browns. It took awhile to get the food and when it came it was clearly a skillet with country potatoes, onions, green peppers and little bits of ham. I pointed it out to the waiter and he offered to have me talk to the manager but I declined not wanting to make a big deal. I wish that I had as I am pretty sure the potatoes had a seasoning with gluten on them as I got sick after I got home. Also we asked for a cherry pie to go and some time later he brought a single slice of pie. When we told him that we had specified a whole pie he became flustered and didnt know what to do. He finally said that we should take the slice for free for our inconvenience. We didnt need a whole pie plus a slice as obviously I cant eat it but my hubby and grandkids can I guess. All in all it was NOT a good Village Inn experience. Thats a shame as Ankeny has a lot of good breakfast spots and next time well definitely go somewhere else.

The first time we patronized this location was on a Sunday morning. We expected the typical church crowd and waited. While waiting I joked with the manager that they should serve free coffee during long waits, such as Sunday mornings. 5 minutes later he brought me a cup of coffee. Nice. I orderd eggs benedict. The first time the order came out the eggs were boiled. The second time the eggs came out they were boiled. The manager came over and asked how everything was. When I explained that eggs benedict are served with poached eggs, he apologized and went back to the kitchen to prepare my breakfast himself!!! (I imagine there was training involved as well for the cook who didnt know how to poach an egg.) Nice. Not only did he take the eggs benedict off my bill, he gave me another full order to go. Nice. Nice. Super nice. Not only have we been back to this location at least a dozen times, but we ALWAYS take our family members when they visit.

Weve gone to this Village Inn many times, and even though they have so much turnover, employee drama, poor customer service and the Chicken Pot Pie from hell, we continue to go back every couple weeks. Weve always paid with a check, as we dont do debit, and dont want to put food on a credit card. And, as senior citizens, we dont carry much cash. Imagine our surprise last night when we were told, "We dont accept checks." Hubby said, "Since when?" She said, "Oh, for a long time, four or five months." That is a lie, as wed just been in there a couple weeks ago. If they had posted the fact that they no longer accept checks, we would understand. But it isnt posted anywhere, nor is it on their menu. If you just must go to a Village Inn, try the one in Altoona. The manager there used to be in Ankeny and its a much better place to eat.
