I just moved back to the Twin Cities and was excited to see a new BBQ joint was just around the corner. Over the past couple months I have gone there three times and after the last visit I may not return. The first time I ate at the Rack Shack was with my wife and we had lunch. I had the BSB brisket and my wife had the Sammie brisket. The sandwiches were decent but the sides were only so-so. The BSB stands for "big son of a b---h" and I expected it to be piled high with brisket. I am not a huge eater but I could have eaten another half a sandwich after finishing the BSB. Overall however, we thought it was decent and worthy of a return visit. The second time I went in to pick up a sandwich to go. I got the BSB again and when I got home I was surprised at how little brisket was on the sandwich....bummer but not a deal killer. That happened during the third visit. On my third visit I again ordered a sandwich to go and when I asked for a few sauces I was told "I cant give you that much sauce for a sandwich". Are you kidding? An eleven dollar sandwich and you are not going to let me have as much sauce as I want....really??? In addition the limited cups of sauce I was allowed were less than half full and a couple had a thick goo around the rim similar to when ketchup sits too long and congeals at the top of the bottle.....YUCK! Bottom line is if I am going to pay over $10 for just a sandwich it needs to be a really awesome sandwich and I should be able to have sauce to my hearts content (not like I was trying to bottle it and sell it on the corner). I sure wish the incredible BBQ pit on Lake and Portland was still around. It was not always the greatest neighborhood but the owner loved his customers and treated them like gold. Someday maybe I will find another as good as that but it is not the Rack Shack. In the meantime I will go a couple miles down the road to Dickies or Famous Daves.

They ran out of pulled pork at about 4pm on a Friday which was disappointing. We substituted a second brisket and were at best sated - nothing was really good enough to justify the price, thats for sure. The Memphis sauce was terrific, in my opinion though. Ill quickly list our meal/opinions: Corn bread: bottom burnt and as a result, just OK Brisket: could have used significantly more flavor, but generally good Smoked potato: ehhh...i probably wouldnt get it again We tried each sauce and the only one i liked was the Memphis. Others in my party mixed St Paul and Memphis saucers and really liked the combo. Aside from the food.... There were only 3 employees working and i could tell they were not happy about this. Actually 2 of the 3 employees were clueless; nice enough but openly complaining to the customers as if they cared. Phone was ringing consistently the entire half hour or forty five minutes i was in the establishment and the employee taking orders commented, "well if they wanted us to answer the phones theyd have more than just 3 people scheduled..." directly to the customer he was assisting, which was fairly inappropriate. All in all, definitely overpriced and underwhelming... every time Ive eaten the Hittners Rack Shack. I may give them one last try in the future, as we new some great barbeque around here. I honestly hope they can tighten things up and impress me because Im sure they can do it. Just havent been affected positively yet...

I was really hoping for more with Rack Shack. I pulled in and kinda liked the thought of a BBQ joint being able to pull off a great place in a strip mall. As i walked in it was a very clean place, i walked out to the counter and checked out the menu. Only one other person in the restaurant so i could take my time. The first negative was the people behind the counter were rude, the owner (i assume it was him) came and a moment later and was very friendly however. We ordered a full rack of ribs, a pulled pork sandwich, and brisket sandwich....sides were corn bread and corn bake. The smoke ring was very defined on all three meats and looked delicious. However, none of it passed the eye tests. The pulled pork (despite a great looking bark) simply had zero flavor. No smoke flavor and the bark provided no additional flavor. My WSM produces a much better product. The brisket was average, very moist, however again zero flavor. Same thing with the ribs....looked great and no flavor. The cornbread was dry....cornbake was very good. In the end, the Minneapolis area has another BBQ place that does not seem to get it. The meat did not stand up on its own. I should not have to pile sauce on for the flavor to come out.

Having read the others comments, I wanted to only focus on the food, but I feel I need to make a couple points first. The decor of the place is not what Id expect for a BBQ joint: - its too clean! For the quality of the food, Id expect worn wood floors in bad repair, with tar-paper walls and dirty-opaqued windows. -Tables are metal-topped. Almost too modern a look for such a place The RIBS are the BEST Ive had. Sorry Dad. They are. Tender, full of smoke, covered with rub and bark. LOVE IT!! ALL of the sauces are awesome (but I didnt have the guts to try the Ghost Pepper filled New Orleans sauce. FYI, Id keep the North Carolina sauce for the pulled pork. Didnt stick to the ribs too well. As for the pricing; you really get what you pay for! Id argue that the meat and side meals are on-par with what Famous Daves would charge. And you can tell the love and effort that went into each dish. Im a fan. I will be back. Often. Now I just need to find a house closer to their location.

There was a time when I wouldve said RackShack was the best place around for some BBQ... Unfortunately I could never say that now. There have been countless times where I showed up to order a rack of ribs & they were sold out... & the times I did get service, I ended up waiting a minimum of a half hour for my order only to receive my french fries Greasy & uncooked. Ive went in there & spent a lot of money & seen a lot of crew members come & go... Today I placed an order & took it home. I wasnt surprised when it wasnt thoroughly cooked... I called up there & there wasnt even a manager I could speak to & the person I did talk to didnt give a F### about my inconvenience. Id rather eat shyt then go back there, they lost a loyal customer...

The meat is incredible. Often times, when going to a restaurant, and the reviews say, "great", "incredible", "super tasty" - you expect it to be good. Maybe not what they said, but good. Rack Shack is top notch. With about 7 or so different sauces, you can really mix it up (but I cant get enough of the Memphis mix). The meat is nice and flavorful without the sauce, with a nice tender "insides" and a crispy ultra tasty crust outside, Ive never had a bad meal here (and Ive been there 3 times in 10 days). Yes, it can get a bit cramped, and yes its not located in a "hot spot" down town. But if youre in the mood for some incredible food with friendly service and above average sides, look no further than Rack Shack
