Food was great. But, the service truly wooed us. We were seeing a show at the Orpheus, and needed a quick dinner to fit in in less than an hour. This place is a 7 minute walk away, in a wee bit sketchy area. We called and asked them if we could order ahead, but eat there. When we got the restaurant, our food was laid out at our table waiting for us, and it was such a cute site. A great way to start off date night. We asked for the check while we ate, and we were in and out of the restaurant in 15 minutes. That may not sound romantic, but it was super cute AND we made it to the theater early. The side dishes are wonderful (the potatoes were amazing) and the duckboards and the bitmap were delicious. Would definitely come back another time and Id love to try their tofu soup.

Sorry someone writing good review here. I believed what they said and tried to visit this place. I hate and not back again. There are a couple of another place like this or buying ingredient from Korean grocery for cooking it. Im totally Korean and Ginseng chicken is my favorite Korean. Taste good, but their attitude was horrible. We asked more a certain side dish (its normal and usual in Korean restaurants). They said we didnt make it today. Whats that mean? People coming with me lie? They made that a couple of days before? Were dumpster to throw away their old food? Anyway, I hate this place. If you like this place, I dont care. However, I cant give more than 1 star. 1 star came from taste.

The soup and bi bim bap were very good. As others have noted, the service is...interesting. The younger male waiter seemed annoyed with the Caucasians at the table and asked if theyd even had bi bim bap before in a snooty way. Not content to condescend to just the whites, he also slipped in a jab at my Chinese friends who requested he put the dishes in the middle of the table so they could be shared. To that request he replied "This isnt Chinese food. One dish in front of each person." Maybe in Korea sharing dishes is considered poor manners. Being rude to guests, unfortunately, does not seen to carry the same stigma.

This restaurant in the Mayfair neighborhood on Lawrence Ave seems to be a long standing staple of the neighborhood..I noticed the priceds had increased since last time I saw their menu...I ordered the Bibimbap..and was terribly dissapointed that it contained a ton of white rice..carrots and less than a palmful of the thinly sliced beef..the service was ok which is why Im giving them an additional star but its not fair to the consumer to pay $10..and get mostly white rice

Ssyal serves authentic Korean food - you cant go wrong here with anything you order and dont count on leftover because everything tastes so good you are guaranteed to overeat. Try galbi, bibimbap, or cod soup, all outstanding dishes. There are a few Korean beers to choose from (or rice wine) on the drink menu, but dont forget to order ginseng tea at the end of your meal. Comes sweetened and with pine-nuts. Unique. Ambiance in this restaurant is warm and friendly.

Nice cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. The side dishes were amazing, especially the bean sprout soup. I had the chicken soup and the portion was generous and flavorful. It reminded me of Brazilian canja, but with Korean spices. The ginseng milkshake was also good. This was my first time eating ginseng and I didnt like it very much - its bitter! -, but I will probably return to try other dishes. I liked the complimentary tea at the end of the meal as well :)

The chicken soup with ginseng is the draw here. And the old grandma, shes the best. Super solid chicken soup. Probably the best in town. Its pricey, at around seventeen bucks, but itll feed you for a couple of meals. The other Korean fare is okay. Its tasty, but there are so many amazing Korean joints out there that do it much better. Go here for the chicken soup (sahm gye tang). And for the grandma. Shes the best.

Never been disappointed by this place. Great food. I highly recommend the bibimbap, spicy beef soup, sam-gye tang, bulgogi, and gal-bi. Their ginseng shake is also very good. Service has always been great for me whenever Ive gone. The lady (I believe the owner) is very good with faces. Havent had any experience with the young male waiter others have complained about yet.

Before I thought the restaurant is nice and very cozy. But recently I changed my mind, the server was so rude acting very strange ( like he has a problem with white people ) one thing is clearly missing - Its called COSTUMER SERVICE. This isnt Korea so keep your bad attitude at home.

다른데 갈걸 후회될 정도로 실망스러웠습니다. 삼계탕은 그냥저냥 먹을만 했는데돌솥 비빔밥은 거의 다 남길 정도로 손이 안갔어요.

Ssyal is THE place to go for samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) in the city. Beyond that, the food and banchan (small side dishes, generally pickled) is reminiscent of the Korean food I grew up with. One of my favorites and go tos in Chicago for Korean eats.

This place is famous for their whole-chicken soup, Sam Gye Tang, which is excellent. Other dishes are good here as well. Their banchan (side dishes) are always fresh. This place is very clean and doesnt smell much, if at all.

Samgyetang and seafood pajeon was okay - maybe about 3 stars. But I added 1 star because of the side dishes banchan. I really loved the banchan - authentic korean style. I would have given 5 stars just for the side dishes.

Sam Gye Tang was delicious. Will be coming back here to try other dishes. Very clean and good service as opposed to the other more popular Korean spots in town.
