Received disparate and discriminatory treatment this afternoon on the patio. After politely requesting that my wine be served in glass rather than a plastic cup, I was informed by the server that restaurant policy prohibited the serving of beverages in bottles or glasses on the patio. The server explained that any exception to the policy would create problems of disparate treatment among guests. I expressed that I understood the policy and accepted service without complaint of my drink in a plastic cup. Soon thereafter two patrons entered the patio and were served beer in glass bottles. The patrons subsequently ordered a second round of beers and the server again brought beers to their patio table in glass bottles. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was initially told by one of the servers that there was no manager present and inquired the reason that I was asking for a manager. After a brief explanation to her, she replied that she would get the manager. After waiting a brief period of time, another server approached me and asked me if she could assist me. I simply explained that I was awaiting the manager. She immediately entered the kitchen and called for "Salvatore." When I attempted to explain my dissatisfaction, he made the excuse that the women had been seated inside when they were served their beers and subsequently were reseated on the patio. Salvatore rhetorically asked if thought it would have been rude to require them to pour their beers into plastic cups in order to be reseated outside. I explained that my complaint was that they were served a second round of beers in glass bottles after they already been seated on the patio for a significant period of time. Salvatore then excused the situation due to the server being an inexperienced new hire. Three weeks earlier (June 26th) the same "inexperienced" server waited on our table, so she was neither truly "new" or "inexperienced." I am very disappointed by the disparate and discriminate treatment that I received today; and, I am more disappointed that rather than apologize and offer a reasonable resolution, "Salvatore" was defensive and repeatedly made excuses for what I consider an inexcusable offense. After dining at Comos for in excess of twenty-five years, I will NEVER again return to Comos. I have intentionally avoided the specifics of why I believe the treatment was discriminatory; however, if any readers of this post value equality and fair non-discriminatory treatment, I would appreciate the boycott of Comos by the LGBTQI community.

Drinks: Coke. Its Coke. Hot chocolate. Amazingly creamy! Was delicious! Bread basket served...surprisingly yummy bread with a hint of cheese in it. My thought was a sign of what was to come! We ordered the appetizer platter, which included breaded zucchini, breaded cauliflower, 2 fried ravioli, 2 mozz cheese sticks, 2 cheddar jalapenos, 2 chicken wings and 2 chicken tenders. The sauses were ranch dressing, shrimp cocktail sauce (?!), and a marinara sauce that had an odd flavor. This cost $8.50. OH, but wait...minimum order is two people. Total is $17. Really? Next time, just order the breaded cauliflower. It was the best thing on the entire platter, which I now think was just lucky. The salad was just ok. Mixed greens, plenty of red onion, one cherry tomato, one black olive and a few garbanzo beans thrown in. To make it seem worth while, its drowned in your dressing of choice. I ordered the Eggplant Parmesan which was literally sliced paper thin. The breading was thicker than the eggplant. To make it look like a dish-of-plenty, the cheese itself is thicker than a couple of pieces of eggplant put together. $13.90 He ordered Chicken Siciliano. The tasteless breaded chicken was so greasy, it was unpleasant to eat. It was served with a side of bland string beans and an over-done skinned baked potato with no taste and the texture of cardboard. $16.45 Both orders came with a side of very dry mastociolli with a large spoonful of very acidic marinara sauce on top. Total bill came to $54.44. So not worth the food. The food was terrible, but the service and atmosphere were pleasant.

My friends and I were looking for a place to have a quick dinner which ended up ruining our night. We went to Comos since we hadnt been there in over 12 years. I started with the Calamari. You would not believe how they presented it. Their calamari was partially fried and dumped over a plate full of banana peppers, no not whole banana peppers, the pickled kind, as well as its juices, thats used for pizza. I felt bad for the waiter because he had to try to smile and comfort us through the entire course because of the kitchens lack of work ethic. After an hour of waiting for our pizzas(let me add, it was a dead night and we were the only customers there) the waiter offered us a free Greek salad for our wait. When the pizza finally came we were ready to fall asleep. I was so disappointed because my pizza barely had a touch of sauce on it and it had cold shredded ham in large blotches all over it. Im not used to lunch meat shredded ham on my pizza whatsoever, Im used to ham squares. I figured I would suck it up and eat it anyway since it took an hour to make and cost me almost $20 for a personal pizza. But after that first bite, I almost gagged. It just tasted like bread with a couple pieces of pineapple here and there smothered in shredded ham, I was going to ask for some mayo and pickles to go with the pizza so it could be the deli sub its trying to be. This was supposed to be a Hawaiian pizza, dont ask where the bacon went, idk how that place is still open.

I have been Comos a number of times because of the lively outdoor patio. Its enclosed from the street and big enough so that there is a decent chance of getting a seat. The food has improved in the last year, and in particular the salad has been substantially upgraded. The pizza is good. And for me, thats what you really order on a noisy outdoor patio anyway. However, there is something frustrating about the treatment of customers. Service is variable (sometimes great, sometimes a case of waiter gone missing). What really is annoying though is that there seems to be some management sanction to poor customer treatment. I was surprised on my last visit to find that after ordering a full meal I was charged over $7 for iced tea ... apparently each refill of the 16 oz plastic cup was throwing a few more dollars on the bill. I suppose $7 wont kill me ... but I can not think of any other restaurant that tries to gouge a customer for small refills on tea or pop after ordering a full meal. I really would like this to be a favorite place ... it would just be nice if they acted like they really liked me too.

COMOS DOES NOT HAVE THE MOTOR CITY JAZZ OCTET AS CURRENTLY ADVERTISED IN THE METRO TIMES. Comos in Ferndale, MI, is falsely advertising that the Motor City Jazz Octet is playing at their venue every Sunday, "ongoing". The ad can be seen in the Metro Times. I called Comos on Saturday, 12/28, to find out the time of the gig. Whoever answered at Comos told me the band would start around 9 or 9:30. A group of eight of us showed up to Comos on 12/29, per the ad, and asked the Host where the Motor City Jazz Octet is playing and they had no idea what we were talking about. They got the Manager (we presume), who also was clueless and said they never have a band there. I told them about the phone call and the Metro Times ad (which is STILL running), and they thought we were nuts. The eight of us left to go to Bakers Keyboard lounge where we had a GREAT time and heard jazz, but I thought I would try to save someone a trip to Comos where, apparently, they are using a phony ad for a jazz band to draw customers in fraudulently. Metro Times has been contacted, yet the ad still runs.
