I often wonder if I understood this place. Maybe my poor un-hipster soul was misguided in thinking this would be an appropriate drinking/snacking experience for a Saturday afternoon. However, then I remember I have been a vegetarian for 10 years so maybe Im like 25% hipster and have judging rights. Or something like that. Anyway, what Im TRYING to say is, "Eh!" I just wasnt into it. The beers, the food, the ambience. Our waiter was busy so he wasnt around to help us pick the right foods/beers; often wasnt anywhere to be found. They didnt have any seasonal drinks on the menu...I mean come on, it was Christmastime, I want some nog, some peppermint, some yuletide cheer, people! The food that we did order was actually pretty okay, though. I really enjoyed the cheddar sauce that came with their pretzels. It threw me for a moment, I thought maybe it was made with bacon though when we did rangle our waiter in, he said it was made with smoked cheese (Im assuming gouda?) accounting for the taste. Beer was okay, not my favorite- like I said, I was hoping for a good seasonal mixed drink. I really dont think Id go back to this place for casual drinking/hanging out/snacking again. Maybe Id give it a try for a full meal, see what all the hullabaloo is.

SWEET POTATO TOTS! Sorry I know its a pub and I should be talking about their amazing selection of beers that youll be wanting to try but I just love tots when theres an opportunity to get them. Sure you may want to hear about their $2 or less 4 oz tasting cups for those nights you want to really find a new brew you want though Id prefer to talk about those yummy potato goodies. Fine, Ill stop. I know they arent for everyone though the food thatll probably win you over are the pizzas and chicken legs(not wings) are also pretty fantastic. Moving on you are going to find a huge variety of beer on tap. While the few times Ive been there I havent seen Cider on tap yet they did have J.K. Scrumpy (and a few other varieties) so I had no complaints as that ranks up there for me. Back to beer, just about any style youd want theyll have (though the brands are heavy on the Chicago influence.) The spots pretty large so it can get both really crowded and really loud. If you are looking for a quiet and intimate atmosphere this isnt the pub for you. if you are looking for a good time with friends though? There are always events going on and specials as well. Its a great spot to stop in with friends for a few good drinks and a good time.

Came in for lunch. The menu is rather sparse and not very appealing at all. The fresh-cut fries looked most appealing. Its a bar and looks like one so some of the creativity of food items seemed a bit outside of their range. I decided to ask the waitress what shed recommend and she said the burgers were amazing and the beef gets delivered daily. So Im picture something just juicy and wonderful. She brings out what looks like a beef patty from Jewel. I wasnt sure if she meant it was delivered from Jewel or what. It wasnt good at all. The bun was soggy on the bottom so I had to take that off and couldnt eat it. The burger was really really peppery. There was no juicy aspect. It was flat and just tasted like a block of pepper. The bacon that was on there resembled cheap mcdonalds bacon. There was nothing at all good about the burger. Only good thing about the food was the fresh-cut fries and I wish I would have gotten more. The drink I got was fine. I dont think they put the splash of ginger ale in there that I asked for. Id probably come back but itd only be to try some of the beer selection.

Yum! My boyfriend and I went here on a Monday night for Chicago Slam Works LitMash, and had dinner beforehand in the main dining area. We waited ~15 minutes for a table, which surprised me for a Monday, but it was absolutely worth the wait. Both the food and beers were delicious. I had the pulled pork sandwich with a side of brussel sprouts. The slaw that came with the sandwich was bland, but the pork itself was really flavorful and tender, and the sprouts were cooked perfectly (not too crunchy, not too rubbery). We also tried a variety of beers--my favorite was the Pearspective. My only complaint was that the food is a little bit pricy. I wish the sandwiches came with sides vs. paying $2 extra, or that there were specials--its not crazy overpriced by any means, but it is just pricy enough that I wouldnt make this a regular stop for dinner. We moved to the back room at 7:30 for a few more beers and LitMash, which was an amazing time! Chicago Slam Works puts on a great show, and the atmosphere was perfect for the event--plenty of seating but still fairly intimate. We will be back!

My favorite place in the city for craft beer, hands down. They always have a killer selection of their award winning brews on draft alongside a few excellent local guest taps. Their menu is setup in a way that you can order various sized pours of everything on draft, priced on the same per ounce so you arent overpaying for smaller 4oz glasses you talking yourself into 20oz glasses because its a better deal. And the tax is already in the price. So basically you can sample the entire draft list if you so desire, and not to the detriment of your liver or wallet. The back bar is open on busier evenings so dont forget to take a look if the front is packed. Their tours are great too as youll get a pint to drink as you move from their 15 BBL system to the fermenter room to cold storage, finally to the closed back bar for a private tasting. They also have a little known private parking lot a block to the south along the highway.

Upon entering one would think that their experience is going to be great but that dream is instantly crushed by the hostess whose hospitality is clearly reminiscent of the overworked, under-paid, understaffed bar. From the host stand to the table, things only get worse. Five minutes for water, another five for a coffee, and by the time you finally get to order your food, youre over the place and the poor attempt at hospitality that the server shows. An hour later you could care less what the food is going to taste like and more about when its going to hit the table. Four score later the food arrives and youre met with even more disappointment with the stail, underseasoned, overpriced "food." The bread?? Made days ago. The sauces?? Nothing great. Maybe if I chugged four or five of their craft beers beforehand the food would be great but for a casual afternoon brunch not worth a penny or a second look.

Came for the tour and beer, stayed for the food. I was skeptical, as a friend recommended a place across the street for lunch. As well, I dont usually write reviews, so this place had to stand out for me. A place with good food can serve crappy beer and do just fine. But, a place with good beer wont survive without good food. I was absolutely blown away with Haymarkets food. We had a large group that sampled the menu thoroughly. I had the Diner-Style Brined Burger, with a side of fries and ranch dressing. The burger was nuts. The olive mayo was crazy unique, the pretzel bun was perfect (theyre often too tough and bready), and the burger was flavorful and juicy. Tried the wings and bleu cheese. Im a bit of a self-advised buffalo and barbecue sauce connoisseur, this buffalo sauce was hot and very unique. All in all, I was completely caught off guard, and will be back ASAP.
