Worst Place ever to go and dine. Pathetic service! We went on Nov 21st evening to try this place and used Groupon ($70 deal worth $150 for 4). Here is a narration of our nightmare: 1) First they pushed us to small tables which is kind of tight for 4 people. Knowing their serving plates are big they should have more spacious tables and sitting arrangement. 2) Our company ordered the same food as we did. Our attended didnt even checked what is going on. After 45 min, I had to go myself to the manager (Rob) to request if we can get our food as our company had almost finished their food. 3) After escalation we got our food which was almost 1 hour after we ordered our food. 4) Our company finished their food and then our food was served we had very tight space. No attendant came to check and take the plates away. Our company had to pick her own place to take it one of the attendants to take it away. Shame on you guys! 5) Lastly, we got our desert and only 3 people got their forks. I am not sure how to eat ice-cream with my hands! 6) Lastly, insult to injury and kind of a slap on our face manager gave us 10% discount (I would keep minimum 20% tip) on the bill (Which was already paid). We had to go to manager how is he planning to give us that discount since its prepaid. He had no answer. (Smart move Mr. Rob!) 7) Finally, manager (Rob) said maybe they can put it on the gift card. Does he expects us to come back to a place after such a bad experience? This money doesnt even pay food for 1 persons dinner. So, we had to ask him that we dont need that money and give that to our attendant. For a restaurant which charges $150 for 4 people is by no means qualify for a cheap restaurant. If you want to enjoy and have a better dining experience then this is definitely not a place for you.

My friend and I (both Ethiopians) went to this place after driving for 2 hrs from a place where no Ethiopian food is available. The food got served timely but the taste was very disappointing. We had beg tebis (lamb chops fried with butter) and it didnt even taste like lamb. Now I think about it, I dont even think it was lamb. It was so hard to chew and had a funny taste like it was sitting in the freezer for very long time. We called the waiter and complained about the lamb and he said the funniest thing ever..."...it maybe the lamb...where we got it from...sometime its soft sometimes its hard to chew...". We were expecting more like "..I can bring you another one ...". The veggie part of the food was ok, but not the best. I actually spent sometime describing to the waiter the difference between spinach and qosta (maybe equivalent to bok choy) which he arguably said they are the same. I saw a lot of people has rated this place high but thats maybe it was their first time to taste Ethiopian food. The price is also expensive, not worth the portion and quality of meal youre getting. Average price is $15. I dont know Chicago well but I think the city doesnt have a lot of Ethiopian restaurants unlike DC area (where the price is competitive around $10 with larger portion and good quality), but if there were more no one would go to this place. I went to Demera once and it was way better than this place.

Stingy portions. Absolutely lacking in service or ethics. Took my Ethiopian wife there with friends for her birthday. Got several of the pricey dinner for two meals. The dinners that were supposed to be for 2 people were more like snack size for a young child. When we told the manager that we paid for the 2 person meals but were only given these small portions he said he would "make it right" and brought out another small dish of meat to add to it. It was still a rip off and NOT meals for 2. Then on top of it all he charged us another $20 for the "make it right" bit of meat he added. How is charging/and overcharging for adding a bit of meat for giving us the wrong dinners to begin with making it right? Complete rip off and unethical and deceitful. Never have been back and never plan to go back. Plenty of Ethiopian restaurants with ethical management with generous meals that dont rip you off to choose from--no need to go to the Diamond. All the Ethiopians in our party were particularly shocked at how stingy and unethical the Diamond was and complained they had never seen such miserly portions served at an Ethiopian restaurant.

Weve been here countless times since the summer of 2005, when a friend visiting from out of town was interested in trying an Ethiopian restaurant. When I went to what used to be the familiar row of Ethiopian restaurants that lined Clark near Wrigleyville, I was disappointed to find nothing but sports bars. We ended up finding Ethiopian Diamond further up in Edgewater thanks to a tip from a friend, and we were absolutely taken by the food. Weve been going there very regularly ever since. Weve tried other Ethiopian restaurants, and a few have been also fairly good -- sometimes better, but not as consistently good as this one. If I may use a baseball metaphor, Ethiopian Diamond doesnt always hit it out of the park, but they always manage to at least hit a 2-base- or 3-base-hit. Its also nice to see that over the recent months, as business has obviously been good for them, theyve worked to improve the restaurants decor, renovate the bathrooms, and hire extra wait staff.

My wife and I were visiting from out of town and stopped by here on a recommendation from our taxi driver, who is Oromo. The food was perfect and asking the lines of what I expect from an Ethiopian place. Were from DC, which is home to the largest population of Ethiopians outside of Ethiopia, so I knew what to expect from the food and was able to impress some of the staff with my smattering of Amharic that Ive picked up. The tibs were on point and the misir wot was great, just the right amount of heat from the berbere. Since we were just here for lunch, I didnt get anything more exciting like kitfo or one of the platters, so the food and service would normally just earn Diamond a four-star rating since you need to be exceptional to get a five from me. However, this place stood out because they had all-teff injera, which was gluten-free, so that my wife could enjoy the great food with me, too. Very impressed and very happy with our experience here!

We were here as a party of 6 and we were waiting for 45mins for our food to arrive. The waiter never mentioned that all our dishes were gonna be served in one single big tray and everyone had to share. Not to sound picky but they shouldve at least warned us or asked us if we had been there before. The place is great and the ambiance very cool and the drinks were also good. But over all the food was just "meh". They assume youve been there and the server did not offer any suggestions whatsoever or asked us if it was our first time we had to google the dishes and pick based on images from the internet! Kinda pricey for the amount of food they give you. But what really pissed us off was the SLOW wait staff. There was a big party when we came and all the servers were just pouring their attention towards that group and just left us to starve. Not worth the hype people!
