I was jonesing for curry and didnt feel like driving all the way to Middletown (my usual haunt) or Branford (my previous usual haunt). I had some trepidation regarding Cumin, because 1 - its new, and 2 - it had some normal American food (chicken wings). I thought - how could it be any good? Thankfully, my need for "now" superceded my need for "good" and I went anyway. To my surprise, my old waiter from the Branford place was there, greeted me like an old friend, and asked if I still wanted my chicken curry. Of course I did. Everything was quick, the right temperature, and the right seasonings. Medium-Hot was exactly that: the usual expected spiciness, with a tease of additional heat. The rice was fluffy with a few peas and saffron for color, the papadams had a hint of salt, the chutney was a delight - a perfect blend of sweet and vinegar. The Naan was great, and kept my tongue happy after biting into the fresh chicken chunks smothered in thick, rich curry sauce. I was given my beloved gulab jamuns as a "good to see you again" treat from the waiter, swimming in delicately seasoned simple syrup, and it had a hint more of cinnamon than Ive experienced in either of my two other haunts. Service was impeccable, and as I shook the waiters hand to thank him for my dining experience, I promised him Id be back again soon. I intend to keep my promise.

So this place is now called Asian Flavor because they have moved off a traditional Indian palette in favor of Nepalese food (which is basically a mostly-Indian Indian-Chinese fusion. Thats actually where the guy is from) So the place tends to be pretty empty, probably because the people shopping at Price-Rite dont tend to be privy to sophisticated food. An empty lobby can be decieving. But yeah. The food is beautiful, and delicious. Especially the samosas and the garlic naan. Ive also had this interesting fried cauliflower that was so good it beat out some of the meat dishes. Also, it was beautiful. All of the food is filling, through spices or otherwise. It really feels good on your body, I think. I am posting this review because this is a really good place that deserves to blow up. It has a super good atmosphere, really good and beautiful food. It deserves to prosper. Support good food in your local community

EXCELLENT FOOD! My sister and I visited this restaurant after trying to find a decent Indian restaurant in downtown New Haven. All we can say is that we were NOT impressed with the selections downtown, so we actually stumbled onto this place by accident...and what a wonderful surprise!! We are from Boston, where there are a fair share of Indian restaurants, and I must say that Cumin is on par and even exceeds some of Bostons best Indian restaurants! Superior service, fresh food, wonderful ambiance, great prices, and LARGE portions! This is a MUST taste if you are looking GREAT Indian food in a wonderful atmosphere! We will def be back again when we are in town!

First time here. I drive by all the time and I wanted Indian and I was in Hamden and I said to myself lets go. So when I have Indian food it is by myself. No one I know will go with me. Oh well. So when I got here...The outside is not the nicest. But inside it is nice and cozy. It was really quiet at first until the dinner crowd came. It got pretty busy around 6. The food was good. They ask you how spicy you want it. I am a pretty spicey girl and I got level 3. It was prefect! I got the chicken tika masala which is my favorite dish. Prices were food. Staff is nice. Place is clean. No complaints. I will be back. :)

This place is utterly outstanding. It completely blows away the competition in terms of Indian food in the New Haven area - the best by miles. I come from the UK here theres outstanding Indian food and this is up there with my favorite places in East London. Great options for vegetarians too. They also deliver for free within the New Haven area, and it comes promptly and hot with an abundance of free rice, poppadoms and chutneys. If you like it spicy you can get it properly spicy but you can also get it milder - they give you the choice on every dish. So highly recommended!

Excellent staff and mangement. This is a very welcoming hospitable restuarant. Having lived in the U.S for 30 years this is honestly the best indian food ive had. The catering staff is amazing. I catered from this restuarant for my daughters wedding and every one of the guests enjoyed the food. The owner Ram, is a down to earth gentlemen and will do whatever neccesary to satisfy his customers. I highly recommend this place for dine in and for large catering functions.

Went here once to try the place out. I dont usually eat exquisite foods from different cultures but I guess if you wanna try Indian food you should come here. I although there wasnt much of a wide variety the cuisine is definitely rich and some sweet and spicy. I I personally thought it was disgusting but try it out yourself and you just might like it. The other day I was wondering what the future might look like. Then I puked all over their floor and left.

Generally pathetic excuse for Indian food. I did the lunch buffet and for $16 went away feeling like a loser. One fried chicken nugget entree seemed like it was reinvented/reconstituted chicken from Chicken Tikka Masala. Nothing but chicken... No lamb. Spinach was soupy and poor tasting. Eggplant/potato dish was OK. Little to choose from and sparse seasonings and condiments. Meager salad ingredients/fresh, raw vegetables. Food was bland and basic.

I took my 82 year old mother to this restaurant for noon time meal. It was great! Mom is very adventurous so the buffet was a good method to initiate her to Indian food. All the food had delicate subtle flavors seasoned by true professionals. Im sure the owners mother or father were experts in food from their hometown. Again, great food, pleasant surroundings and a wait staff that is attentive but not pushy. Prices are in line with the area.

One of my favorite places to eat in hamden. Ive eaten at Cumin India a handful of times and have never been disappointed. The lunch buffet is great for people like me who arent terribly familiar with Indian food, and want to try something new. Prices are good and the service is great. The waiters keep naan on the table and water in your glass. I have liked just about everything Ive tried here. Awesome place to eat and unique for the area

I grew up in the UK where there a Indian restaurants on every street corner. I have also visited the Indian subcontinent. Cumin Indian Rest ranks with the best. I have eaten at this restaurant several times, both evening and afternoons both weekdays and week ends. My experience has been universally good. The service and food are very good food, the portions are generous and the prices are helpful at times such as these.

I have never bothered to write an online review, for anything. But I feel like I need to say how wonderful this restaurant is. The food is excellent, fresh and flavorful. The buffet is also great, with a wonderful selection. The service makes you feel like you are entering Union League in New Haven. Even when I come in for take-out, I am treated like I have been a regular for years. Dont hesitate, give them a try.
