I came here with my fiancee for a late lunch because the reviews were all pretty good.....when we came in we were greeted by a friendly waitress who sat us and said shed be back with waters and bread and butter for us. I noticed a bussboy taking a bread basket out of the microwave and he brought it to our table. Of course like 30 seconds later after the bread had cooled it turned rock hard....you never ever microwave sliced bread. The waitress then came by to take our orders. I ordered the shrimp and chips and my fiancee was informed that they had "the best burgers around" so he went with the burger. Mind you just the 2 of our meals totalled a whopping $17 for mine and $14 for his....when my shrimp and chips came the shrimp was cocooned in 3 inch thick deep fried batter which was absolutely TASTELESS.....I was so angry.....and the fries had zero flavor....not even salt....how hard is it to make fries?? My fiancees burger was average....nothing special, he said I make better burgers than that. Once our food came nobody checked on us for like 40 minutes.....we had to get up and walk to the bar to ask for our tab because our waitress was busy chatting to bar patrons. I will never ever return and if you like good food, I recommend you go somewhere else too!

My favorite haunt (especially on Friday nights) when living in San Pedro (L.A. Harbor) from 2007-2011 was the Whale & Ale British Pub & Restaurant. I still make a point of dropping in there regularly when I visit L.A. on leave. Great food (Recommended main courses: fish & chips, curry chicken, Angus beef burgers. Favorite appetizers: Welsh rarebit, Tandoori lamb chops), great atmosphere (owned by a genuine Londoner, Andrew Silber, and staffed by hard-working and friendly servers including the lovely & talented Shannon, Katina, Linda, and Beth), great old-school British decor, and great company (a friendly bunch of regulars among the clientele, not to mention the excellent live entertainment of pianist Rob Klopfenstein, and the Sea Shanty singing group on the last Friday of the month). Theres a reason Ive chosen it as for my last six birthday and going-away parties. To quote Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, "A splendid time is guaranteed for all."

Very bad experience on 09 April 2016. First, nobody was at the host stand and we basically had to seat ourselves in the empty front of the restaurant on a Saturday evening. Once we sat down a hostess came over to tell us who our waitress was and we waited 15 min to meet her. Then, it took over 15 minutes to get our drinks (3 waters and a beer). Food order took over 45 minutes to get to us. During that 45 min, I had to go to the bar myself to get another beer and more water because my waitress was no where to be found (older lady). Food was decent. Fish and chips were really good (hence the 2 stars), but the service was awful. There are too many other good restaurants in the area to deal with this one again. Very disappointed considering all the positive reviews we read. Had higher expectations.

Not cheap, but good portions for what you pay. For first time goers, you might drive past it - not a lot of curbside visibility. Once you find it, however, order a desert first. You dont want to stuff yourselves with the generious portions and not have room for desert. I would avoid the salads though, waiters handling your trays were tossing the salads by hand when we went an dew didnt notice major sanitizing before or afterwards. The other stuff looked to be on keel, and the deliciousness and lack of getting ill afterwards speaks for itself.

Very nice place. Good for a date, especially if both of you like to sing along with the great piano player. I go there on the last Friday of each month for the Chantey singing upstairs. Great fun, but a very warm/stuffy little room, (for some reason the singers dont seem inclined to open the little window in the room...strange. Service is good and the food Ive had was okey dokey. Parking is a bit iffy on a Friday night you may have to walk 2 or 3 blocks, or get lucky and park on 6th street.

Whale is one of my favorite restaurants. I LOVE the duck in Cumberland sauce, the ginger beer they serve (non-alcoholic...but you better like spicy) and the warm toffee pudding with caramel sauce. In addition, the entertainment is often unparalleled. I make a pilgrimage around this time every year to have dinner at the Whale and listen to Simon Spalding play (Simon the fiddler) his vast repertoire of sea shantys. No other English pub style restaurant even comes close to Whales caliber.

This is an interesting spot. When you walk in you are surprised to find something like this in San Pedro. It has all the appearance of an authentic British pub. The prices seem a bit exorbitant, higher than the last London pub I was in, so I doubt that I will be back any time soon. Also, the bartender, a really young guy, was visibly intoxicated, which was funny at first but became annoying after my first and second ruined black and tan.

I really enjoyed this little gem. This is as traditional a British Pub gets! I came here one late afternoon with my GF and had the fishNchips and a few ice cold beers. Everyone was super friendly and even had great conversation with the owner. I can tell he really cares about this place because he asked us our honest opinion about the food we ate which btw was wonderful. Will return, in fact tonights as good as any day?

February 10.. Had a party of 5. Service was extremely slow. Food is good but very overpriced. Maybe 4 other parties in resturant but it took almost an hour to get our food. Had to get up from table and retrieve bread we ordered. Being a local, i realy keep trying to give this place a chance but am continually dissapointed in the service.

Passing through on our way to a cruise, ate here last night on a whim. AMAZING food! The fish and chips was the one of the best Ive ever had, washed down with a nice dark glass of Guinness. Gayle was a great waitress and took excellent care of us. Great place, would be a regular if I lived here!

We have been dining at The Whale and Ale for many years and continue to visit 2-3 times per month. Andrew always greets us with a smile and a handshake. We have enjoyed excellent food and service on every visit. Nice beer, cocktail and wine selections at reasonable prices.

Wow! Andrew is a gem with his ready smile and really cool British accent :) The place looks really cool from the outside and gets better and better the further you get in! Live pianist on Friday nights. I couldnt find a single flaw. Can hardly wait to go again!

Prices are NOT what they are online. When we pointed this out, the manager agreed to honor the online prices... Then the bill came. Different story. The food itself was only okay. Not at all impressive. Not worth the price. We will certainly NOT be returning.
