WOW - Hubby and daughter came here in June/July for Cal Orientation and the difference between then and now is nothing short of amazing! Hubby thought Id enjoy a good beer and we figured wed be able to find something to eat as from the prior visit their "pub food" was good and the last time they were there the place was slow so he believed wed be able to just walk in. Imagine the surprise when he noticed the place had expanded and was packed! The menu had changed as well! We sat down and began to review the beer menu. Our server came up (who turned out to be one of the owners, Jesse, and not a server after all) and I told him my preference in beer and he suggested their Hazy Jane II. Brian decided on their Star Belly IPA (nice nod to Dr. Seuss). While waiting for the beer we began to read through the menu. Hubby and daughter advised me it had been completely redone. I remarked that it had the same feel and fare as our favorite restaurant down here in Torrance. The beer arrived and we were not disappointed. The Hazy Jane was exactly as described. When I took my first sip I could taste just the lightest notes of lime and the finish and lacing were perfect. The Star Bell IPA was a stand up IPA and one he will continue to have in the future. Our server (Jesse again as they were short staffed) returned and I happened to remark on the similarities of the menu to our fav restaurant as the changes since they were there early in the summer. He let us know they had worked over the summer to make the changes and they were working. He also let me know they had visited our fav restaurant here as well as some other highly rated brewpubs in CA for inspiration. Our daughter ordered the veggie burger and fries - the first comment from her was that it actually had the taste and texture of a real grilled hamburger. Hubby tried it and agreed. She enjoyed it thoroughly. Our younger daughter ordered a turkey burger and fries and said it was one of the best shed had. The buns were delicious as well. Maybe made in house? I forgot to ask. Hubby and I decided to share the nachos and added chicken. The jalapenos are fresh and HOT but incredibly flavorful. There is the perfect amount of chipotle crema, guac, salsa etc. The chips never got soggy at all. The chicken we added had a wonderful roasted flavor. The service, even though down a few staff members was on point - we didnt wait for anything. Everything was quick, efficient and polite. Excellent service all the way around. I also had the opportunity to try their short rib mac + cheese. Huge chunks of short ribs mixed with onion, mac n cheese and sprinkled with paprika made this a taste bud explosion. I paired it with the witless which had the perfect amount of mandarin and a hint of banana. Just as good as my favorite Hefe from a local brewery here. This place is a definite "revisit" every time we are in Berkeley! Nice Job Jesse and team! We appreciated the excellent food, service and conversation! Spectacular!!

Food poising, exceptionally rude customer service from a busser, and a stolen jacket, Im not returning. All the graduate students rave about Monkey Head, which is indeed very good. After the last two times Ive been to Triple Rock, however, Im very unhappy. The first of those two, i went there and became ill after eating burgers with friends The last time I went there I went there because a friend was leaving town and we gathered there on a Thursday to enjoy some Monkey Head. As people were ready to go, I still was nursing a nearly full pint of beer so I decided to stay and finish it off before I left. I said hello to the table next to me and we exchanged pleasantries about the weather, etc. As I turned back around my beer was gone and I asked the busser clearing the table if my beer might have been taken by mistake and that I was still drinking it. She became very defensive and accused me of not putting something covering my drink to let her know I was saving it. I told her I never left my seat and just turned to say hello to the table next to me. She became very rude and told me she had every right to take it. I asked if I might be able to get a replacement. She told me no but I could go ask my server. So I went up to the server Mischa, explained what happened, and she was very nice and gave me a half pint replacement. I went over to the busser and asked her name. She responded, "Why?" I told her I wasnt satisfied with her customer service. She told me she wouldnt tell me her name, and that if I wanted to talk to her manager that he would defend her no matter what. I told her if she didnt tell me her name I thought it would look even worse for her. "Isabella!" and she went over to the server who had given me a replacement and they began to stare at me and talk about me. I felt very uncomfortable and walked back to the table where I was sitting and noticed my jacket was gone from the chair. Id only seen the busser around the table. I didnt see her take it but I suspect she did. I asked the bartender if anyone turned anything in, looked all around for it, and it wasnt found. Ive returned twice to see if its in lost and found and it isnt. Ive been a server for 4+ years and I realise mistakes happen. I believe the proper way of handling it would have been to just say I didnt realize you were still drinking your beer. Let me get you another one. Instead I got treated rudely, a jacket stolen, and a bad impression of the staff working there.

I dont want to say outright that this was the worst experience Ive ever had at a bar or restaurant, but I really cant think of a worse experience that Ive ever had at a bar or restaurant, or anywhere really. Ignoring the not-so-great atmosphere and our server placing the wrong order, the 2-star rating comes from around closing time, when one of the servers/bartenders became strangely hostile and incredibly rude and terrible as they kicked us out of the bar. I understand wanting to close up shop and go home, but it was 1:58 on St Patricks Day, on a Friday night, pardon us for wanting to enjoy the last of our beers in your bar. And if, for whatever reason, you really cannot wait until 2:05 instead of exactly 2:00 for the last stragglers to walk outside, I think escalating to insults and hostility before kindly asking us to hurry up with our beers is outrageous. So, despite it being just a 10 minute walk from where I live, that was the first and last time Ill be going to this bar, at least until they replace some of their current staff with some people that have a little more decency.

Walked over after grabbing 2 pints at Jupiter just a block and a half away. The place had a decent number of people around but wasnt overly busy in a Sunday night (it did clear out a bit more after the kitchen closed at 10pm). Plenty of room at the bar and the bartender was really cool (he even gave me my last pint for free). 8 house beers on tap so I went for the sampler (they also had 2 cask brews which I didnt get a chance to try). All 8 are served up in 4oz pours so a sampler may be all you need. All were pretty good with a couple being great. Didnt checkout the food menu while I was there but plenty of people were enjoying the appetizers. Lots of pretty college girls around to chat with while you enjoy a drink. They have 1 gallon plastic cubes with a tap for off-sale which I hadnt seen before. A great place to enjoy a good beer and good company.
