I am a reasonably experienced sushi junkie so I tried this restaurant for the first time tonight with both apprehension and an open, optimistic approach. I was not disappointed. Cons: - The head chef seemed a little distant and not quite sure how to handle my openness. No biggie though. A Japanese chef who hasnt learned English very well can be a good sign. - They were out of ankimo. - The dish with the "sea bass (new style)" on it was chipped (about 2 cm squared). - The scallop sushi was not served quickly enough after preparation, making the nori (seaweed) wrap stale and very chewy. Pros: - Ankimo (monk fish liver) was on the menu! This is a real treat when you can find it (and if you ever find it freshly prepared, you know you are at a top shelf restaurant). I hope they have it next time I visit, even if its from a tube. - The "sea bass (new style)" was a heavenly carpaccio delight! Worth another trip by itself!!! - The (nigiri) sushi (salmon, tuna, and yellowtail) was very good. The rice, always the under-appreciated ingredient, was perfectly prepared, not cold and sticky at all. The fish was fresh and well cut, if a tad on the large side (a bit too big to eat each piece as a single bite in traditional Japanese style). - Above average sake menu, including a half dozen selections of cold sake. - Well above average dinner and sushi menu -- many, many things to try here. - Pleasant, quiet atmosphere. The head chef clearly has quite a bit of experience up his sleeve. Next time I am going to learn his name and maybe a little more about him. Im looking forward to trying Akai Hana again with my whole family.

The place was busy but was willing to wait since i drove from 75th ave to eat here. It was me by myself and was looking forward to eating here.. There was a group in front of me and 2 couples that walked in after. The sushi bar was open and the server explained there was at least a 20 min wait for regular tables but can seat at the sushi bar. The group ahead of me decided the sushi bar. I raised my hand and stated id like the sushi bar also since i was next in line. The waiter asked me to wait which was understandable to seat the group. When he returned he asked 1 of the couples that came in after me if they would like an outside table or sushi bar other wise there is a wait. They chose outside. After seating them and running other employees duties. He came back to seat the last couple who came in after me. I was extremely disappointed by being overlooked as a customer. Time for a new sushi spot.

I was looking forward to a pre-movie dinner here, but was very disappointed. It took about 25 minutes for our order to be taken and even longer for drinks to be served, then another 25 minutes to be served. The iced tea was the instant kind, not fresh brewed, yuck. The eel handroll was mediocre. We ordered the California roll, tempura, and beef teriyaki and the beef teriyaki was tough and hard to chew. Tempura was pretty good. Never received the California roll but had no time to correct this as we had to get to the movies. There seemed to be enough staff, so not sure why everything took so long. Hate that we spent close to $35 when I could have cooked a better dinner at home.

VERY disappointed!!!! ugh, I dont know how this restaurant has gotten so many great reviews. This place is terrible!!! Okay, so the service isnt too bad. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. It was happy hour so we ordered the Vegas, tootsie, shrimp tempura, and the rainbow roll. with a good rating I was expecting some bomb sushi but I was totally wrong. The food is disgusting. we couldnt even finish all that we ordered. The shrimp tempura was the only one that tasted alright.. then we had to wait 20 min for the bill to come.. Overall, I wouldnt recommend this place. Im really concerned about my health at this point. I better not get food poisoning !

Although our server tried her best she couldnt keep up with all her tables as they were under staffed. Our food and drinks came out in a timly manner but we did not see our sever again for about 30 mins. Then our salmon skin roll still had pin bones in it, I noticed them as they went down my throat! To top it off we waited about 20 mins to get our check after we had to ask for it. While we were waiting at the front to pay we had the uncomfortable privilege of witnessing the sushi chef scream at the only other waitress for accepting the apparently unusual request of a customer, this was the last straw, well never be dining there again.

A group of four of us showed up around 5pm for dinner and the place was jam packed (which is a good sign) but we soon came to realize they didnt want our business. The host refused to give us a wait time and when we asked him what our options were he said that they had a big party coming in so he didnt know. He just stared at us blankly and so we left to go spend our money somewhere that wanted it. Too bad, this was our first time and we wont be going back again.

This is the best sushi in phoenix hands down.!!! Kabuki at Westgate is good but this is the authentic feel and taste. They greet you when you walk in. The menu is HUGE and happy hour is great pricing. If you want Excellent sushi and want to go somewhere quiet and smaller to enjoy a meal this is the place to be. I try and go here once a week thats how good it is.

Dont bother with this location. Low quality food and service. I have been going to their other location on Northern and 23rd Ave for years and it is far superior to this. Also, I noticed that the prices are higher at this location. I see that they have very good ratings so maybe it was just a bad day for them, who knows? Either way Im not amused...

We have been coming here for nearly a year because it had such good sushi for a decent price. But lately we have been noticing how dirty everything has been. Sticky as well. We were pretty disgusted last time and have also noticed how inattentive the staff has been also. I dont think we will be going back any time soon.

Omg this is the first time Ive been here. Ive barely started eating sushi and eating here was the best place for experimenting different kinds of flavors. I highly recommend this sushi and grill. The happy hour menu has so many selections!! Im definitely coming back!!! Thank you Akai Hana, youve gained a new customer!!
