There are only two good things going on in this place. 1. The food is good (the guy cooking in back is probably Hispanic) and 2. the pretty young lady who runs the counter (Im pretty sure she is Hispanic too). The owner/sushi chef however is where everything falls apart. The man clearly lacks customer service skills especially to the Japanese standard. When I walked in to pick up my order the young lady was sitting down having a lunch break and eating. The owner/jerk was behind the counter talking on the phone working on my sushi roll. Not once did he stop to put the phone down to address me. He walked over to me, looked at me and then turned around and walked back toward the sushi station facing the wall and facing his back towards me as he continued to talk on the phone. It was not even an important conversation. it was just random talk, はい、私は理解しています。あなた愚かな馬鹿. Seriously how hard is it to say please hold I have a customer, ... hello sir how can I help you? oooo hai pick up yes. What is the name? okay very good I am still making the sushi roll it will be just a few minutes please have a seat. But no, the jerk just turned around like a disrespectful punk. This forced the young lady to stop eating her lunch and go behind the counter to help me. Hey Mr. Owner, she was on a lunch break, that means she does not need to work for that duration of time you jerk. Have some respect and decency for your employees and get the hell off the phone. It is people like this owner that give the lovely people of Japan a bad name. You sir are a bad example of your people and culture. Seriously take some hospitality classes and learn a thing or two about leadership and customer service.

There is nothing "express" about this place. Opens at 11... got a call saying they dont make sushi until noon. I asked if I could have my order ready by then and the woman who was on the phone said yes. Drove half an hour out of my way because of all the positive reviews I saw, only to be told the guy who makes the sushi isnt in yet (it was 12:20 by this time). She had no concept of being apologetic for the inconvenience what so ever or even think to call and let me know it wouldnt be ready when I had requested. Waited nearly a half an hour after the fact before I even got my food. 50 MINUTES FOR A SUSHI ROLL IS RIDICULOUS! However, it wasnt the wait that irritated me. It was the woman that works there and her awful approach to customer service. I work in customer service and would NEVER ever handle a situation like this the way she did. She ruined any desire in me to ever want to return. I suggest you hire people who are able to help your business and not hire people like her who make the customer feel neglected and irritated by her poor and rude mannerisms.

After searching for some other cuisine and giving up I saw Japan Express. Sushi sounded like a good option so I dove in. What a pleasant surprise! The sampler platter is a grand introduction. miso for a starter is filled with large chunks of tofu and is delicious. Then the sushi came out. At first I was a little thrown with the paper plate, but presentation is not as important as taste. I was blown away with the quality of the hand rolls. The fish was flavorful and tender. It seemed to melt away to just the essences of the flavors filling the mouth. Usually I enjoy a bit of wasabi with my sushi, and while the wasabi was just as good, the fish did not need it. Truly a fantastic "hole in the wall" sushi bar.

First visit to Japan Express, but wont be my last. I ordered the Obento as it has a nice sample of several dishes. It has teriyaki chicken, pork fritter, 2 gyoza (dumplings), steamed rice and a small salad. The gyoza are amazing and are delicious with a bit of sriracha. The home made tonkatsu sauce is a great complement to the breaded pork strips. The teriyaki chicken is great also and I was told it is a family recipe that theyve been using for 30 years. Great food and quite affordable. I will definitely be back. Especially for those dumplings!

We just bought a house in the area and were painting when we got hungry. Knowing we like teriyaki bowls we decided to try Japan express. It was a good choice. Everything we have tried has been good and have had nothing but pleasant experiences with the staff. Sushi is made to order which is part of why it taste so good. The teriyaki bowls are really good and probably top 3 that I have had around the Phoenix area. As long as the food keeps tasting good and the staff is pleasant we will continue to come back.

this place is ok. prices are ok as well. only thing I am not a fan of is the teriyaki sauce, its plain. if you had samurai sams its not comparable. I only eat here for a healthy meal. if your into working out. Eating high protein and good veggies they got it. The chicken is grilled crispy and good. they have brown rice. I order the large chicken and veggie bowl sauce on the side. the chicken portion is 7-8 oz chicken grilled. its super healthy and very good quality.

I tried the teriyaki chicken rice bowl. As a Japanese myself who came here to America, I did not realize how much Americans use salt instead of flavorful ingredients. The chicken is crispy and would of been pretty good if it werent for the overly salty sauce. Really, really salty. To add on, for the price of the bowl, Id rather go to Ollie or Zs next to them. The portion size is relatively small for the price.

Went there with my wife just to see and try a few items during lunch. All we ordered was very tasty and delicious. The portions are good as we had to take some of our meal in "take home" cartons. I now take my family to eat there several times a month. I would go more but we live far away from this restaurant. Its a small out of the way kind of establishment, however that makes it all the more better.

Ive been eating Japanese food at Japan Express for about 4 years now. I moved to the USA in 2006 and with all due respect, I cannot stand the fast food culture that is so peculiar to this country. While shopping at Frys I noticed this little restaurant and decided to give it a try. Since then, when I think about a fast, carry out, healthy dinner, Japan Express is always my fisrt choice.

Me and my husband are always looking for good Sushi. I was glad I checked Yelp for this location. The Sushi was good but so was everything else we ordered. The Teriyaki Chicken, Tonkatsu (pork cutlet), and Gyoza (pot stickers) were incredible. We have been and will continue to go back to Japan Express. YUM!

Dont let the how his place looks fool you. Tiny little corner store, at first I was like uh no... But saw it had good reviews so took a gamble. We now have a new sushi spot and its right up from the house!!! Love this place it is 100% worth it, and the price is good too! You wont be disappointed :) enjoy!
