For my wifes birthday we decided to choose between Kabuto, Sakura and Kan Pai. We had been to Kan Pai and Kabuto before, but not Sakura. Having liked our last experience at Kan Pai, we decided to go there. The food was delicious and the portions were substantially larger than our last meals at Kabuto. However, our chef was a dud. His first trick with an egg resulted in the egg landing on my stepsons plate. Not a disaster, and he rolled with the punches. But other than an onion volcano, no other entertainment was offered at all. No style or pizzazz at all, no interaction with any of us at the table other than to ask about our meal selection. Once I realized we werent getting any sort of flair from our chef, I looked around the room at other tables. The closest other table was getting the full treatment from their chef, and plenty of Ooohs and Ahhhs from the diners. So I guess theres a wide variety in the talent level (and minimum requirements) of the chefs. A few years back, we had what I consider the best chef ever at Kabuto, and in comparison on the next few visits they were fairly subdued. And as I said, the portions there are smaller than they used to be, and smaller than Kan Pai. I would return to Kan Pai at least one more time to see if our luck is better with a more entertaining chef, and because I know the food is fabulous and the portions are in line with the prices. But for that kind of money, I have what I think is a justifiable expectation that the chef is going to bring some FUN to the table.

I was there on the weekend with my family, I was ordering Shrimp, Scallop and side order steak, and we also order Sushi combination, They are great taste, fresh fish, quality is the best, also my shrimp come out great, also steak ( rare ) cooked perfectly, Scallop just seared perfectly. And when I read the reviews about this restaurant i just dont understand ? For me this is the best Japanese steak house in this area. Im living in short pump for 10 years and Ive been to several different Japanese Steak House. I think this is the best I have ever eat. They were busy that night but the service was good. Manager come to us ask how is our dinner. Well if you want have a great dinner with good atmosphere you should try this restaurant. Im definitely will have our Company Christmas Party here since they have a very large private room can accommodate big party and their price is the lowest among other steak house around with this kind of size restaurant.

My girlfriend and I went to Kanpai on Valentines Day night for a sushi dinner. While the sushi was decent, our experience didnt leave us with a strong desire to return. Like many Steakhouse & Sushi restaurants in town, they cater more towards the hibachi grill crowd, as 3/4 of the restaurant is made up of the hibachi areas. The sushi bar is off to the side when you walk in, and is right beside the bar. There are TVs everywhere, which is quite distracting and takes away from having a nice quiet dinner. The service on this particular night was slow. They only had one sushi chef working (why only have 1 chef on Valentines Day??), and he was slammed. This resulted our order of 4 rolls coming out one at a time, which was frustrating. Im not a sushi connoisseur by any standards, but I felt it was pretty good... when it finally arrived.

I went here last night for my birthday dinner. We always get hibachi for birthday dinners but this was our first time here. The salad was good, the soup was just okay, and there was nothing spectacular about any of the food (I ordered the chicken and steak). The steak seemed to be lower quality than other restaurants Ive been to. What really left a sour taste in my mouth was the chef. He didnt speak at all other than to dismiss our concerns for shellfish allergies. He spun an egg and did an onion volcano but with zero flair. The presentation is really the big reason to go to a hibachi style restaurant and there was nothing there. The other chefs seemed to be entertaining but not ours. I guess we wont be coming back here again.

I came here the first time with friends about 2 weeks ago for hibachi. My friend recommended it because shes really enjoyed her visits here, and I think its a great hibachi place. The staff are very friendly, and they sing happy birthday in Japanese as well as English, which I had not seen before. Our table wasnt particularly celebrating anything, and so our cook prepared our meal without too much gusto, as was smart of him, but I did see cooks at other tables with children do much more entertaining stunts. They do a good job of reading their crowd. And the hibachi was delicious, and the yumyum sauce and garlic sauce were spot on (sometimes the garlic ginger is too ginger-heavy and a bit inedible)!

Never coming back here. I came in to place a to go order. I asked the hostes where to go she pointed me to the bar. I waited 5 minutes before someone noticed I was standing there (no none was at the bar) when someone did notice me I got a menu 5 minutes later they asked me what I wanted. Right when i started to place my order the manager whispered to the waitress taking my order something and then I was told they are to busy to take to go orders. After I waited 10 minutes I ended up going to to Kenji hibachi and sushi bar for an even worse experience. Check out my review on them to know where to avoid.

I agree with wolfpaws, expect the Mexican chef actually performed but you could see that all the other chefs were not. My main issue was the the rice was VERY UNDERCOOKED, the shrimp was EXPIRED / STALL and the chicken was DRY!!!! Wait staff and manager did not care and for $40 for two people to eat you would think that they would care. In Glen Allen this would be the most expensive Japanese place and the WORST in the state. Sadly I am not exaggerating about this either. If you go you will see, they even are not busy on a Friday night. STAY AWAY!!!

The food was mediocre, the service wasnt that great and the price for the food was outrageous for what we got. The only bright spot of the whole experience was the chef, he was great. The 2 families we were sitting beside One of them was very very nice the other 1 was extremely obnoxious and rude the wife was drunk off her butt and it just made the experience worse. You could tell the husband was embarassed, and she was speaking for everyone at the table and badgering the chef. Im sorry but for $50 a person I expected a lot more food.

Terrible...Never again! One word: Botulism! Went there for my sons birthday after we could not get in Osaka. Should have tipped us off by the fact that the large hibachi area was completely empty at 7p.m. The service was borderline rude and disengaging, empty glasses, sushi that we ordered was mixed up and on the wrong persons plate, worst tasting sushi in west end. To top it off, two people in our party had food poisoning!! Dont waste your money, time, or health on this place!!
