I am SAD to say that my experience with the delivery as well as customer service was not a good one. I love love LOVE their cakes and wanted one for my birthday (yesterday). My wonderful husband was able to get it delivered since all of the stores near us have closed. He was charged extra, even after the regular delivery charge, due to the fact that we live in Wheaton and they are coming from Alexandria. Ok, whatever. They told him they would have it delivered no later than noon. He was called at 930 that morning to confirm the address. By 12:30 we still had NO cake. We called and the store contact was surprised becasue by her account, the delivery company had left "a while ago". She called us back to let us know it would be another 15 minutes. Well, after about 40 more minutes, we finally got our cake...an hour and 10 minutes AFTER the estimated delivery time. They give a window of 3 hours (delivered between 9-12)... it should not take that long to get over the bridge to our house. Anyway, what REALLY concerned us was that the delivery was in a regular car, not a refrigerated unit. The cake was then melted and sweating with a dent and smudge in it due to the sloppy transportation. The heat was also a factor. If you are delivering cakes, I would think you would know how to properly transport your product with weather being a factor. The delivery person also just walked into the house unannounced. My mother in law runs a daycare in her house. She has a sign on her door that states this and not to make loud noises between 12:30 and 2:30 (which is also why we wanted the cake BY noon). The delivery person said that she saw the sign and thats why she just walked in... NO!! you call us (the number on the cake) or the contact at the store and let them know you are there... you do NOT just walk up into someones house. That is SO unsafe. We have a BIG dog. What if the dog attacked this person. Or the kids woke up or something. Can you imagine how startling that is to have a complete stranger just WALK into your house...The door has to be unlocked due to the day care and fire laws. You cant have locked doors in case of an emergency. But also, common sense as well as professionalism is not to just WALK into someones house. We sent pictures of the cake and stated how unhappy we were to the company. Mr. Brown emailed us and asked for more clarification. He also stated that due to the weather, the cake will sweat but it shouldnt effect the taste and the delivery states that it may be late cause of traffic... Like i said. If you run a cake business, and you know the climate of which you live... plan better. I can understand traffic as well. But if you are going to be an hour + late, let the customer know. YOU DO NOT just walk into someones house unannounced like its ok. We stated all of our grievances to the company and Mr. Brown... and have yet to hear anything back. I feel that we should get something refunded like the extra fees charged for delivery that was not satisfactory. Being 30 mins late is one thing... but an hour or more when we paid for an extra delivery charge is just unacceptable. Also, the fact that there was NO concern for the overly late delivery or the fact that the person walked into a house is BEYOND unprofessional. There was no acknowledgment at all about the unprofessional conduct or the fact that we were unhappy customers. That is not a good way to run a business. I was very disappointed becasue I love their cakes. But after this fiasco, I am sad to say, we will not be using them again.

I am extremely surprised to see that so many people have had negative experiences with Cake Love. I have had cupcakes from most of their locations and my boyfriend and I have both purchased birthday cakes for each other from them as well. I have found their cupcakes to be a tiny bit on the dry side from time to time, but more often than not they are extremely delicious and have fantastic flavor. I have a penchant for the more savory flavor profiles, so I love that while Cake Love is inventive with their flavors, they also aren’t overwhelmingly sweet. I am especially sensitive when it comes to icing, as people have a tendency to go a bit overboard when it comes to sweetness in that category - Cake Love is quite the opposite. Those who complain about the “cold cake” or things being dry may have not been following the carefully laid out instructions for bringing their baked good to the proper serving temperature. The yellow sticker on the box is there for a reason people. In addition it is a DC original and continues to be locally owned and I find that to be yet another reason for my continued patronage.

All I had from here was a cupcake that was cold, small, and not very satisfying. Theres a reason this cake store has no wait for cupcakes: there are many better alternative in DC. I went with 2 friends in the morning and we all tried different flavors. When we asked why it was cold and hard, the lady said they had to refrigerate them from the day before for safety concerns... I thought cupcakes were supposed to be fresh?!? Who tells their customers that they are eating day old cupcakes?!? Anyways, they were a little too skimpy on the frosting and the cake wasnt moist at all. My friends got theirs microwaved and said it still wasnt very good. I dont know about waiting an hour for cupcakes, but avoid this one and go to Baked and Wired or Georgetown Cupcake instead. Im also thinking about trying Crumbs :)

Today at work someone brought in a few boxes of cupcakes. I, being a serious lover of cupcakes, took two. One for myself (vanilla) and to share one with my cube mate (strawberry). I will have to say the cakes were nasty. It was as if they were making cornbread and then decied to make cupcakes as an after thought. The frosting was okay and it was almost like whip cream vice butter cream (assuming that is what the office buyer was ordering butter cream). I dont like cold cake, so I allowed mine to sit to warm up and there is something seriously wrong when I decide to take one bite and throw the rest away. I am sorry, but these cakes were a serious waste of money. They were dry and lacked flavor.
