Our visit to Black Bear Diner started out great. We were seated very quickly, Jill our waitress was fantastic, and the food was AMAZING. Jill brought us our receipt and some boxes at the end of our visit and we headed up front to pay for our meal, which was $24.30. My parents had given my Husband and I a gift card to the Black Bear Diner once they opened up here in Ogden, UT. The gift card was for $25. When we approached the counter to pay my husband told the cashier that he had a gift card he was going to use to pay for the meal, he stated it had $25 on it. She said okay and asked another gal working the registers/hosting to help her run the gift card. The other gal asked how much we were putting on the gift card, the cashier then proceeded to tell her $24.30. They then added in the amount to the system and ran the card, gave us the receipt and told us thanks for coming in! On the drive home we kept saying how good the food was and how impressed we were! Once we got home I looked at our receipt before throwing it away. I noticed that it said we owed a balance for $48.60. I was confused. I then looked further into the problem and noticed that instead of running our gift card for $25, they added another $24.30 to our gift card, making the total on the gift card $49.30. So at this point it made it look like we didnt pay anything. I was sick to my stomach. We hopped back in the car and drove back to the Diner. Once we got to the Diner, The cashier that had "ran" our gift card was walking around outside frantically. I followed her inside. The minute I walked inside the hostess/cashiers were all claiming "that this girl and husband left without paying for their meal and gift card". I was so upset. They were talking about us and I had come back to make things right and be honest, even though it was not my mistake. The three girls didnt even acknowledge I was standing there and listening to the conversation. I then chimed in and asked to speak to the manager. They said sure and went about talking about me and my husband in a very negative manner and blaming us. The manager finally came and I started to explain the situation to him. At first he started to blame us for not paying. And then I re-explained the whole situation again...I asked him to run the card and maybe I could explain the situation better. Once we ran the card he was able to see the mistake that was made. He asked the cashier/hostess about the situation. After about 45 seconds of awkwardness one confessed that it happened. He then tried to fix the situation and said that he was sorry that this had happened. We said it was okay and he went about trying to take the added $24.30 off the gift card. He got flustered and said, "well, how much do I owe you then? 70 cents?" I said yes. He then gave me the 70 cents and said I am sorry. My husband and I left. I was not happy to walk into a situation to find that people were blaming the customer before trying to figure out the mistake. It really bothered me that they were talking crap on customers, in front of other customers waiting to be seated. Second of all, we didnt even get a "Thank You for being honest and coming back". We live 15 minutes away, it was not like it was convenient for us to drive back there to fix the situation. I honestly loved the food, but because of the terrible service shown by the cashiers/hostess/manager we wont be back anytime soon.

Last night we had the displeasure of visiting the Ogden Black Bear Diner. I frequent the location in West Jordan and always have hot food and great service so I was excited to try the newly opened diner on 12th Street. Its clean and has the same decor as the other Black Bears, I noticed their dessert case was lacking a few options but was glad to see one of my favorites as the daily special. As soon as the soup was served I knew this was not going to be like my dining experiences in West Jordan. The soup had a layer of congelled fat sitting on the top and was lukewarm at best. My chopped steak came out fairly quickly and had raw onions, instead of grilled. The piece of meat under the onions, mushrooms and gravy looked & tasted like it was straight out of a tv dinner. The mashed potatoes had cold spots throughout. My seasoned vegetables were served warm but hard. (Clearly, they barely made it through their microwave cycle.) The meal was gross - Im being polite. Then our ticket over charged each meal $3.00, we asked for a military discount and had the manager come over declaring "I was told we need a discount over here" while they were checking the back for a dessert I typically take home he also bad mouthed another Black Bear Diner, as I was attempting to explain to him that his staff could learn a lot from them in West Jordan, esp the cooks. I explained to the manager the quality of the food and really complained about the foods temperature. He had the audacity to respond by saying hed "consider the feedback", its cold food in a diner - he better not consider the feedback but change a few things or Corporate may begin getting complaints directly instead of the polite feedback I gave. He was so proud that his establishment was a corporate location unlike the West Jordan location, Ill be happy to dine at franchised locations before any corporate option in the future. After explaining that they didnt have any lava cakes available the manager stuck his tongue out in a kissy face and said had he known hed have shared the chocolate he just eaten with me. Add disgusting service to a gross meal and Ill never return! If I could, Id rate 0 ☆s for Ogden Black Bear!

The restaurant was clean and has a warm feeling. Ordered their chopped steak special listed on special menu when you walked in with a price if $9.99 and was charged $12.99. Mashed potatoes was cold with warm gravy placed on top. Onions were supposed to be grilled and instead they were sliced and placed on chopped steak and sauted mushrooms and then covered with warm gray lije it is suppose to grill the onions. I understand chopped steak is a fancy way of saying a large hamburger but the chopped steak was like a large thick McDinalds hamburger fancied up for a TV dinner. The vegetables tasted like they were lightly heated in the microwave and then cold when served. The corn bread muffin that was served with my salad was good. Salad was a salad with bacon ranch dressing. My partner said that if she knew that it was going to be like this she would have stayed home and asked me to make dinner like this because mine is better and fresh. The server was pleasant and curteous. When we went to pay for our meal I asked the person at the register if they offer a military discount. She said she needed to get her manager. When he came out he stated I heard we need a disciunt. He entered a discount on the register. My partner asked if there was any lava cakes left. He asked the lady to go check and said we wiuld wait on the check to see if there is any lava cakes. After the lady came back and said there was the fixins for ut but they were not baked yet my oartner said that is ok and the manager said he was sorry and if he had of know he could have shared some of the chocolate that he was eating and made a jester like he would have taken some out if his mouth. We mentioned to him that the food was a little cold when we got it and it was cold half way through eating it. He stated that is good to know and will take it under advisement. We also told him that the only other black bear diner we have been to was the one at Jordan Landing and he made a wrinkled face and said they are not a corporate location like his. I told my partner after we left that is a good thing because I will take a franchise establishment over a corporate establishment.
