WOW. We had to check this place out because of the reviews. We were blown away by the amazing food and exceptional service. Got there at 4:45 on Saturday with many others before doors opened at 5pm. (we passed this place up many times during week because of long lines outside) Manny was our server and just phenomenal. We got the special app, scallops..HUGE and perfectly cooked. I got the primo margarita at Mannys recommendation when I asked for "smooth". He was right...I got two during dinner. My 19yo daughter got the ultimate enchiladas (3: shrimp, crabmeat, crawfish) and especially loved the shrimp. I got the Chilean sea bass special. Perfectly seared in butter and topped with crabmeat and fresh avocado. IT MELTED IN MY MOUTH. Side dishes included grilled portabella, carrots and zucchini. Carrots were a bit undercooked but other veggies were perfect. The rice side had corn, cilantro, and sweet pepper in it. My husband got crisp tacos and they were just to his liking. We got Flan for dessert and wish we ordered one to go as well...so. friggin. good. We ended up at $140 for the three of us including 20% tip. SO WORTH IT. If you can only eat out one night on your vacation, make this your place. Get there early and they are cash or check only.

The food is arguably the best Mexican food I have ever had. The building, though, is very small for how busy it is. Due to the size and business, service was spotty. The worst part, in my mind, is they dont take credit/debit cards. Instead they have a small fee based ATM in the corner. So if you dont come prepared with a reasonable amount of cash to pay for your meal and tip, you end up waiting in a line by the entrance to use the ATM. I think it would be reasonable to assume that ATM runs out of money from time to time just based on my observations on how many people use it. Granted, I came during the summer during a busy time, might be different when all the tourists leave. If you arrive after 5:30, good luck getting a table. We got there around 5:00 and we had a very short/reasonable wait. Dont necessarily take this as a BAD review though, like I said, the food was amazing! If we return to this restaurant, I will call ahead a TOGO order and bring the right amount of cash to settle the bill. As a party of 4, we had the queso, fajitas, cheese enchaladas, and crabmeat enchaladas. Everything was fresh and spectacular. The meat was super tender and perfectly cooked.

This is my third time visiting La Playa. Their food has always been tasty along with their service being great. I tried the island pepper this time. It was a well thought of dish however the plate was saturated in gravy which made everything a bit "mushy". I also thought the refried beans tasted out of a can. The main part, the pepper was great though. I wouldnt say this is the best mexican restaurant I have ever been too but it is definitely the best in Port Aransas. The server was nice but I only saw her when she took my order and delivered my food. She was focused more on a bigger group which I understand but I wish she would have came by once so I could get a refill. I do not like how they do not accept credit or debit cards but yet they have a atm machine to conveniently charge people a fee to withdraw money to pay for their food. This to me is ripping off customers. I have no problem paying the prices for the food even though the are a bit high, but then charging a fee to withdraw money from their atm because they do not accept credit cards is wrong. Get a credit card machine.

Havent tasted the food yet but I can already say the service is bad here. I called to ask if dogs were allowed to be in the outdoor area and the lady just passed the phone to someone else without saying anything else. A male responded and I asked "who is this? I was never told I was being transferred. I just want a simple answer. Are dogs allowed, yes or no?". When we got to the restaurant to order to go, a lady told me they werent doing to go orders and left again without saying anything else and got a manager. Some guy that I assume is the manager comes over and doesnt say a word except signals with his finger for me to go to him so I do. He then points to the floor where he wants me to stand and all he literally said was "what do you want?" in a serious tone. No manners. Takes my order and says "cash or check only" and leaves.

We never miss a chance to stop in and eat at La Playa when in Port A! One of the best spots on the Island. The table side guacamole is a must if you love guacamole. The portion sizes are generous as well. Recently, my husband and I ordered fajitas for one-more than plenty for two ppl. The staff is friendly and they try to be quick with the huge turnover (esp in the summer). I do want to give a shout out to Caleb, a local Port A HS student working at LaPlaya this summer. He came to our table to pick up all the dishes and was the friendliest bus boy ever. Polite, smiling, asking if our food was good, invited us to come back-great customer service for a HS student. You guys MUST keep him and when of age, but him on the waitstaff if he doesnt leave anytime soon. Great kid!

So we came here the last time we came to Port A, on our last day and I have been dying to get back for 2 years.... There will be a wait, but its so worth it... get a drink and enjoy a little people watching, you will be surprised how fast 40 minutes can go by. Listen to what the specials are and try them... the prices are a little more than your average restaurant but the serving size will make up for that. We all shared a meal with someone and still had food left over. The guacamole is made at the table, and is so good, I could have ate just that and had my frozen margarita and would have left happy! The service here is one of the best on the Island. Go and enjoy!

Im not sure if its the server... We came and took a while to get a table I understand its a Sunday . I ordered an ice tea and gotten ice water then the chips had to be reminded 3x before we got one then our order came wrong. The price is alright because of the location of the restaurant but customer service has to be at least great. They only accept cash and check only they dont want any burden of extra fees on customers payment they should atleast provide quality service. Just a thought I wonder what they will do if they come to the hospital where I work and give them the quality of service they gave me .. they probably gonna raise hell

Food was good. Service was alright. Horrible restroom. Yes Thats right.... singular not plural. No baby changing station. "CASH ONLY"!! REALLY?! Its the 21st century get a credit card machine. They have an ATM inside the restaurant to which they direct every customer to. They must own the machine or get some commission or something with all the service fees that machine charges. If u decide to go, make sure u take cash before u go, otherwise youll be contributing to their commission.
