I finally decided to give Matsu a try because I have been driving pass by it on the way to the public library. First, the establishment is pretty small, which is good because it gives the small neighborhood sushi joint vibe, like how it is in Japan. We stopped by during the happy hour (note, its only from Monday through Thursday) and the price is very good for happy hour. We ordered 5 rolls, some nigiri, an appetizer, a dessert and the bill came out less than $45 for a very satisfying happy hour meal for 2. The food we ordered from the kitchen was the agedashi tofu. The tofu was very good as it comes in 5 pieces of nicely fried and the sauce is well blended without being too salty. We did order the dessert but that will be talked about in the end. The rolls came out in decent time (the house was a bit packed as all tables and sushi bar seats were taken for a Thursday) and the waitress did remind us which roll is which just in case. The rolls were all delicious and definitely a steal for the happy hour price. The nigiri pieces were also equally good tasting and not being "short" on just because its happy hour. After we finished the meal, we had room for dessert so we got the fried ice cream. The fried ice cream is one of the best one I had here in Houston. Its drizzled with chocolate syrup and the ice cream is nicely fried where it is soft but still cold and goes great with the battered crust. The only complaint is that the waitress response time is a bit slow. I had my water cup emptied and it took almost 10+ minutes for her to stop by to check on us and get a refill. I have already mention the establishment is very small so its not hard to see her walking back and forth but not noticing our water is low or gone seems a bit inattentive. It also took us a bit for her to stop by and check to see if we need anything else. If the waitress can work on the response time, this would definitely be the newest neighborhood sushi joint for me. But in this Energy Corridor area with lots of choices (and even more coming soon), they will have to work a bit harder to stand out more.

Truly a hidden gem on 1960! A friend introduced me to Matsu as her favorite place to get Sushi. I have since been back multiple times with and without her (sorry Valerie). This place is great for lunch, dinner, or date night. It is an unassuming restaurant in a strip center, easy to overlook but it has some of the best sushi. The service is friendly and fast. The food is reasonably priced and fresh. I have never once gotten sick from anything here nor had a bad experience. You can tell their fish is fresh and I also like that they often give out complimentary pieces on the house. They have a long happy hour: 3pm-7pm during the week and it is a steal. Try the shrimp tempura and the crab puffs. They also have a variety of options for those who do not eat raw fish (me). Definitely give this place a try! WAY better than Waza or Toro in my opinion. And Im fat and like to eat, so my opinion counts!

Out of all the sushi restaurants in Houston this is by far the worst. Went here with my boyfriend and we ordered miso soups and a couple of rolls. Over 40 minutes later all we had received were our drinks. No apologies for the wait and they actually looked suprised that we upset about having waited so long. The service was also horrible. Our waitress seemed irritated she didnt even attempt to smile and she continued waiting on other customers while not checking on our table after she first delived our waters and that ordeal took 15 plus minutes. The owners of this "establishment" should be ashamed of themselves. They should cross their fingers that another sushi bar doesnt open on the same block because with service like matsus it wouldnt be hard to steal their business.

The restaurant was very clean and the staff was very attentive. There was only one other table seated. I was there around 4:45pm. Really expected more people. The pepper tuna sushi was very generous on the size of the fish. The Red Moon roll was okay in size, but was very bland. All I could taste was the sweet chili sauce. I got it without creamy wasabi which Im really glad because it just would have hidden the lack of fish flavor even more. They gave me a complimentary dish of plum ice cream that was really good. Kudos for that. Not the worst place Ive had sushi at, but certainly not the best. Staff politeness and store cleanliness gave it a solid 3 starts with the pepper tuna earning the 4th, but the roll prevented a 5th.

My girlfriend and I have been trying to find a good sushi place we have finally found the best spot! We had the Raw Combination and it had 24 pieces of salmon, tuna and I think crab meat. Talk about fresh! The rice was perfectly cooked (not too sticky and not too hard) and the fish was so fresh! The waitresses working were super friendly and even made our edamame spicy even though it was not on the menu. The edamame was so good it didnt need anything. They had so much flavor. The miso soup was just as good as anywhere else and the won ton soup was tasty. Im so glad I live right down the street from this place. I will be going all the time until Ive tried everything! Would highly recommend!

Certainly not worth the 85$ I paid for 3 people to eat here. And the technology they use to run your card is ancient. And when it wouldnt run my card they refused to run it again and wouldnt tell me where an ATM was and woulnt make the food while we went to find one. When we came back to pay they said I needed to get a new card because it was my card not their system or their unwillingness to run it again even thought it worked next door to get the kids pizza and at the ATM. Very rude and food was not worth the time I wasted to get it especially for their prices. Also the soft shell crab was super over cooked to the point of being burnt. Blah! Horrible dont waste your time ad money.

Eat here with my wife all the time. Stellar service, food quality, and ambiance. The menu recently changed and my favorite item, the pine nut tuna tartare, was taken off. Though that is a massive shame, the restaurant is nonetheless one of the best Japanese restaurants Ive ever dined in. Edit: Menu changed completely, as did management. Its just not the same. The food is kind of bland and the sushi was oddly warm. My wife and I were devastated. Probably wont dine here again and will have to look for a new sushi spot.

This is the Japanese restaurant that originally turned me on to Sushi, Sashimi, Shabu Shabu, and all other Japanese 15 years ago when I was still in high school. I will still think of it as classically superb Japanese food down to the immaculate presentation and phenomenal service. This was the original Japanese restaurant in Northwest Houston and is still one of the best! The quality of the fish cannot be beat and their specials menu is ever-changing.
