Every now and then, a burger chain comes to Houston that creates a buzz. When a Texas chain enters the area, that is pretty exciting, meaning that it is still considered home-grown. I like shopping and eating local, and that includes "state" local. So, when Grub Burger Bar came to Houston from our northwestern neighbor College Station (although Im am NOT an Aggie), we chose to try their City Center location "way out" in West Houston. Grub Burger Bar offered all the right ingredients - "A proprietary blend of beef that they grind, in-house, everyday and the buns are made from scratch and baked fresh throughout the day." The proprietary blend of beef is Certified Angus. Yes, all the ingredients are there. The atmosphere was there. Even a free coupon for one of their signature shakes was there. But, was the taste there? Was a great burger there? My "burger buddy" Mark said that while the burger was good, the next time he would skip the burger and go right to the shake! I have to agree with Mark. My burger was fine - nothing more than adequate. I ordered their "Lockheart Legend" - Applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, housemade Dr Pepper BBQ sauce, topped with two hand battered onion rings and sliced dill pickles. With this kaleidoscope of flavors, I should have enjoyed a taste explosion in my mouth. Instead, the fresh baked oversized bun lacked flavor, the onion rings tasted like they were of a frozen variety, and the burger patty (ordered medium while they prefer to serve medium well) was under-cooked and raw in some places - lacking flavor. The house made pickles, eaten on the side, were quite good. When I took the meat off the bun, removing all the other condiments, I discovered a peppery taste. And, the Applewood smoked bacon - I dont even remember that being on the burger. The Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce was quite ketchup (not my favorite), and the cheddar cheese was anything but sharp. While not a bad burger, it was just not the burger euphoria I had anticipated. I would usually say that the sauce and other items hid the flavor of the burger patty, but that main ingredient (when eaten alone) had no discerning flavor of its own. One person commented on our Facebook post that she "loved" Grub Burger Bar. I was told she lives in the same area as Grub, so my thought is that she had not experienced other burger areas in town. My advice to her would be to read our blog, try out some of those spots, or venture of her comfort zone to try some new places. Then go back to Grub Burger Bar to see if you still "love" their burgers!

This has got to be the BEST burger joint in town! They have booths large enough for a family of 4-6, tables, and bar stools with higher tables, a bar, and a covered patio for the ultimate dining experience. This place is very child-friendly and affordable, especially on the weekends! I was not a big fan of beef, because it generally upsets my tummy; however, grub burger grills their prime meat to perfection. Also, their rolls of which they bun the burgers and sandwichs with, are baked fresh everyday, and the leftovers are not used in the following days! If you do make it, I recommend you try Apple Pie Moonshine Shake -- thats right Moonshine, as in alcohol. My husband and I absolutely love shakes made with soft serve that do not melt while you are trying to eat! The staff is very friendly, and the managers (((Charles and Ignacio))), make it a point to stop by every time we come in to speak with us, make more recommendations, inform us of what is to come, and ask us how the service is on that day. The difference in management at this joint, as opposed to others, is the management is very hands-on. Grub Burger is one of Town and Centers hidden gems, and things that are worth having are worth fighting for; so me and my hubby come here at least once a week. If you are deciding to go, prepare to face withdrawal symptoms, after your first round of this immaculate food! ~Patrick & Danica

Came for Fathers Day! Wife told me it was going to be the best burger Ive ever eaten okay wife... Those are some big shoes to fill and my expectations are high! It seem very packed so with 3 kids under 6,I was already concerned. However as we were about to order they asked if we were staying or ordering to go. We were staying. They found us a seat and put a reserved sign for us. Aw...thank you! I chose their regular burger with a shake. Burger took a little while to get there but no so Long that at the kids were going crazy. Drink: fountain drinks and youve to refill yourself. At least we had to and no one asked us if we needed a refill. Food: Burger was really good! A bit messy but definitely an A+. Kid burger border line burned Service: A Price: I got surprised. Burgers dont include drink and side (French fries or sweet potatoes).

The employees here are excellent. This is the second time weve visited Grub. The first time they had just opened and were still figuring things out. Our food was taking a long time to come out so they compd us with upgraded fries and free spiked shakes! This time we ordered two burgers and a strawberry shake, with two straws!! Decided to share the shake with my parents so we asked them last minute to split it. They ended up giving us two full sized shakes! We were surprised since this was our mistake not theirs. Much appreciated! Got the ahi tuna burger and the mushroom burger. I preferred the mushroom. The ahi was a little dry. Not the best burgers in the gourmet burger arena. Shakes were perfect since we did to-go and ate in the plaza listening to Vince King. Well be back!

When I went to Grub Burger for the first time, I thought I just had a bad burger and tried it again the second time. I had the front porch - regular burger with sweet potato fries. Im just disappointed at how greasy/oily the buns are. Theyre not out of the world amazing buns, but they are made in house which I guess is something. The burger was pretty ordinary and I was surprised to get waffle fries for the sweet potato fries, I have never seen that before and thought it was unique. However, I think the fries were a little too burned/too crispy, so I didnt like it that much. The server was friendly and checked on us frequently even though we sat outside. I dont think the burgers are worth the price.

Hidden on the second floor in the City Center area, this place could possibly be a hidden gem. Grub burger is similar to Smash Burger in a way that it is set up fast food style but manages to retain the quality of the burger. I ordered the "Front Porch" with fries and they really serve everything fat, I ate half of my meal and was already full. My friend ordered a Nutella milkshake and it was so soooo good, I definitely will order that next time I go. I believe at the bottom of your receipt, you can get a free milkshake if you come back within 10 days. They really know how to get you. Pros: - Service - Quality of food for value - Location - Nutella milkshake - Napkins at the table Cons: - Nothing
