I was expecting soooo much more, but it didnt live up to the hype. If it hadnt had so much publicity raising my expectation level, I guess I wouldnt have been so disappointed. Decor is cool and hip, industrial and splattered with graffiti kind of place. Deep Ellum restaurants have good decors, thats for sure. Monkey King has both high and low tables for your preferences. Food wise, we ordered Hot beef noodle, Slaw and Soup dumpling (aka Xiao long bao). I should have been alerted when I see Slaw - which Chinese place would serve this?! - The beef noodle is not too salty and not oily either, with lots of green. Portion is huge. However, the beef is very dry. - The soup dumpling flavor is decent but again the meat filling is very dry. - The slaw is standard sweet n sour, but is fresh and refreshing. Service was good - the waitress was friendly and quick. Food came out almost immediately which is a bonus. So....if youre looking for a quick bite, and dont feel like BBQ or Pizza, this is a good alternative. But if youre looking for authentic Chinese beef noodle, this is a no go.

Nothing against the soup, really like the soup. The service is another story, I hate to believe I received racist behavior and service at the Deep Ellum location but I have nothing else to believe. I was the only Black man or person in the store (Saturday afternoon, April 29th 2017). I placed a to go order with a short white lady, short black hair, a little dumpy (heavy) from the waist up, she was wearing blue Jean shorts that day. After I ordered I sat down, almost immediately my order was up (1 chicken noodle soup). It sat up there 8 minutes. I watched her put ice in the soda machine, call customers who placed orders before me and after me. I received my order when another lady went behind the counter and my order was the only one up there for several minutes. I would have just asked for a refund but I was getting the soup for a sick friend. Probably will never go again , tried calling before posting this but never got an answer. I understand her actions may not be indicative of everyone there, because I have know idea why she was like that.

Id driven past this place a bunch of times becfore actually trying it, since its only open for a few hours each day! If you dont live or work nearby, you have to time it right to make it here, or come on a weekend! So I came here for brunch on a Saturday. We ordered pork dumplings and spicy beef noodle soup to start. The dumplings were very flavorful (and hot, watch out), and theyre even better when you dip them in the soup! Speaking of, th soup was delicious as well, not in the same kind of flavor as the dumplings but very filling and with a solid amount of meat for protein. We ended up wanting to try more too, so we got some more dumplings, the soup ones this time, which have meat but also soup inside them. Dont make the horrible mistake of biting into them without being ready to drink the soup.... it will blast into your face and clothes, haha. Overall, amazing authentic chinese food, the only one of its kind Ive found right near the center of town.

The dumplings with chili were beyond fabulous!!! They were fresh and soft with a delightful kick with the chili sauce on top. The beef noodle bowl was somewhat bland but was better when I added some Schiracha sauce to it. However the chunks of beef are too large to eat with any resemblance of manners and two of my pieces were so fatty that I ended up spitting them out into a napkin. The ambiance is very cool and fun. I love that there is a huge window where you can see into the kitchen while youre waiting in line. They have big red picnic tables to sit inside but a few tables only had two people on them and they ignored us when we asked to sit. Being that it was 39° outside, patio seating was out of the question. The inside is pretty small so be prepared to wait for a table. We will be back but only for more of the wonderful dumplings. If you try this place out, please be courteous and kind to others needing seats :-)

I was so sick. Everything in me craved soup. I was referred to this place. A friend drove my ill self to Monkey King on a cold evening recently, where I was entertained by the enthralling sight of noodles being hand made. I stood lightly shivering on the sidewalk, where I ordered the spicy beef soup, and a side of soup dumplings. The noodles were perfection. Thick and just the right amount of chewy. The broth was savory and spicy without tearing up my mouth-flesh. The thick chunks of beef were incredibly flavorful. The soup dumplings were one of the most delicious things Ive ever tried. Like the soup, it was savory and danced on the very edge of perfection - in my mouth. While my body worked hard to heal itself, this soup gave it the magic concoction that it needed...and left me indefinitely craving the deliciousness that is Monkey King Noodle Company. Food artists extraordinaire. You have a friend for life...

Hand-pulled noodles are tasty in their Dan Dan Noodle and other noodle dishes/soups. The soup dumplings have the best flavor of all the places Ive tried in the DFW area. The dumpling skin isnt quite as thin as Joes Shanghai in NYC or Din Tai Fung, but have gotten better and more consistent over the past year. Plenty of free street parking during the day (most of the meters are for late night). New location as of July 2016: they have moved down the street to 2933 Main. Menu has expanded (see photo of their temporary whiteboard menu). Five picnic benches for outdoor seating and five more in the climate-controlled indoor portion of the restaurant. Old location will be transformed into a dessert place.

Got the spicy hot chicken soup and hot chicken wonton soup and veggie egg rolls. The broth was bland and greasy and needed flavor and not at all spicy. Tried to improve it with the siracha sauce and hot oil sauce but didnt work. The noodles were big but also no flavor. The wonton soup was similar but a little better. The chicken in both soups were dry. The only good thing I liked was the egg rolls. It came with a delicious slaw. The employees are friendly but definitely not worth tipping if the only thing they do is bring out your food. You get your own drinks and throw away your own stuff. Over all its an over priced bland soup restaurant catering to the young crowd.

The noodles are made in-house, the décor is trendy and modern, they serve beer, everyone is friendly and there is plenty of indoor seating if you dont mind sitting next to a stranger. However, $17 for lunch without drinks is steep for vegetarian peanut noodles. The atmosphere inside was very loud and echoed, while patio seating is not an option due to the loud construction going on next door. The sauce is good and I can usually get another snack out of the leftovers, but I remember it being better before they moved locations. I dont know why they ask if its for here or to go if they just hand you disposable containers anyway. Worth a visit, but expect a wait.
