While I have been a frequent customer at Tokyo in Providence I am reluctant to go back. I have always thought the food to be pretty good and you get a good bang for your buck, especially since it is BYOB. On May 20, 2008 I arrived with out of town guests at 8:15pm. We were seated once a table was cleared. They had a couple of big parties, and seemed busy, but also fully staffed, just to set the scene. A wait person did not even acknowledge us until about 20 minutes after we were seated. We ordered some light appetizers and a Sushi boat as the appetizer while we sipped our wine and thought about what else we wanted to order. The Edamame was the only order that was brought out. We had to go hunt for our waiter 45 min after we ordered to ask about the Sushi boat. At 9:50 when the Sushi boat finally arrived we ordered more Sushi. At 10:15 we asked about that order, when one of the Sushi Chefs told us " O...bad waiter". We again asked for our food and decided at 10:30 it was too late to eat, so we cancelled it and asked to see a manager. We were laughed at and were told there was no manager tonight!!! We were presented the bill after asking for it of course. No apologies or comps. We left and ordered take out from Pizza Pier a couple of doors down. While we find the whole experience quite unique and comical, I dont think I will ever be back there with out of town guests. I will miss the food, but that was too much! Five Guests Leaving Hungry and Exhausted!!

Im a regular here, almost weekly, because the sushi is fantastic. I highly suggest the autumn roll and the spicy hamachi. However, the service is consistently terrible...almost to the point where Im not willing to sacrifice for great sushi anymore. We brought my good friend for his 21st birthday, and were seated around 10:30pm (they are open until 11). We were hovered over the ENTIRE time that we were reviewing our menus and trying to make a toast to our friend (and we were not the only customers in the restaurant, mind you). When we asked for a simple bucket of ice to chill our champagne, the servers made it out to be like it was such a hassle, and didnt even bring us a bucket that would fit the bottle. To finish it off: immediately upon receiving our orders, we were presented with the check and asked to pay so that they could cash out. I have worked in customer service for YEARS and this is absolutely NO way to treat regular customers, especially when theyre out for a special occasion. We had to put a hold on enjoying dinner in order to divvy out a bill between 10 people. Not to mention, my room mate and I both felt pretty sick the next day...probably because they rushed the order and didnt prepare the food properly. I really hope that the management shapes up here...or Im really going to miss the sushi.

Tokyo has been "our place" for three years now. Simply put, the sushi is made from the finest quality fish, in the most generous servings and fairest prices, I have literally ever seen. Im a bit sushi-crazed, and Ive eaten it in coastal cities from Boston and Maine to Maryland and Connecticut. Ive tried the supposed "best" Providence has to offer--celebrated places like Haruki--and Ive never, EVER, found quality to match. On top of that, the menu is creative and includes tons of specials and even hot dishes for those friends who just fail to appreciate the beauty that is perfect sushi. The interior is the only thing about this place that leaves me unimpressed. The building feels like it has zero insulation. In winter, you have to bring a heavy sweater or freeze. Theres a side room with traditional low tables and cushions, but you have to ask specifically to be seated there. Otherwise its the central bar with shabby booths, or the re-done dining room where its freezing cold. The restaurant seems to be popular with large, very noisy parties. It seems like every time we come were privy to some college kids loud conversation. Overall, though, I cant recommend this place enough. Its a real gem, in a city where its hard for a restaurant to stand out among the pack.

This was honestly the worst sushi Ive ever had. The crab was incredibly dry and was very clearly imitation crab meat. The spicy tuna was ground up too fine and tasted very very fishy (which shouldnt be the case on a Friday night if they get fresh fish everyday). I only ate one piece and decided I couldnt stomach anymore - and half of it was tempura flakes. The appetizer, a spicy harumaki, looked absolutely hideous (not unlike the contents of a diaper) and didnt taste any better. The service was terrible - there were only 3 tables full and the waiter still took forever to take our drink orders. Sushi is one of my favorite types of food, so I feel like I know what Im talking about. This was just a horrible experience overall. And since the place is BYOB, we didnt even have alcohol to numb the pain.

Tokyo is an excellent spot! Chantelle, previous poster, described it best. It may not be the best looking spot in the world but that is ok because the sushi is the BEST! My girl and I have been coming here almost every week for the past 10 years, we have never had a bad experience. We have had sushi up and down the East Coast and nothing compares to Tokyo. They have actively cut down on the amount of rowdy college students, you now see many more professors and professionals than students! Tokyo is BYOB and the prices are VERY reasonable! Dont be fooled by the rating. If you want amazing sushi at very reasonable prices, go to Tokyo !

My boyfriend and I went there last Friday to celebrate our anniversary. We both ordered the same thing (chicken teriyaki) but when our food came out, we were served two different entrees. I returned mine and asked for the correct dish. Fifteen minutes later, we asked the server where my food was, and he assured us that it would be out shortly. Twenty minutes later we asked for the bill and for my meal to be removed. Not only did it not show up, we found it was never even reordered. Terrible service and a horrible first experience.

Staff are eager to please. Because it is BYOB, the check at the end of the delicious, colorful, beautiful display wont break the bank! A varied menu with many choices, from Sushi, Sashimi, to cooked Chicken Teriyaki and more. The salad dressing is otherworldly! I LOVE this place. In the back, you remove your shoes and sit at a low table, which is cozy and romantic. The front of the restaurant is more American, with tables and booths

Its all different now. This is no longer a Japanese restaurant. Its a Chinese place just like any other. The menu is all made up of just sushi on one side, and standard Chinese take out foods on the other for some reason. No more good Japanese entrees, no soups, the rice they had was burnt. Dont believe the menu you see online right now. This isnt the same place any more. Its very unfortunate since we loved the place before.
