My ancestry is Japanese and I have visited Japan many times and had sushi all over Japan and at the best sushi restaurants in NY City (Zagats). It is a given that a sushi restaurant must have fresh fish and Ive always had that at Ran Zan. What is unusual and very traditional is how the rice is done and flavored. Most sushi restaurants do not flavor their rice because of the added expense. Ran Zans rice is flavored like it would be if you had sushi in a home in Osaka or Kyoto and look at the rice before you eat it and you will notice the sheen or shininess of the rice. Of course your miss these subtleties if you dunk your sushi in too much soy sauce and wasabi.

I have yet to find such good sushi and japanese food in the Boston/Providence area. I just cant descibe the flavors. So far everything Id had on their menu is great...the agedashi dofu...sublime. The service however, isa complete hit or miss. Ive been ignored, forgotten, had some of my order come out only to be told 15min later that they were out of whatever dish I also ordered. But then sometimes its great. My advice, go with an open mind and no hungry children.

I have lived in Providence for nearly four years now. I have also traveled to Japan and eaten the sushi there. Before living in Providence, I lived in New York, where there is also excellent sushi. Put simply, Ran Zan is the best sushi spot in Providence, and I would not recommend you try any other place. Ran Zan is authentically Japanese - run by a Japanese husband-wife team, and their food is of the higest quality available in the area.

Absolutely LOVE love love this restaurant. The owners are so sweet and nice, and the food is always delicious. Prices are great for an authentic Japanese dish. It is a small restaurant and service can be a bit slow, but definitely worth waiting for the food. My only tip is dont be afraid to call a server over, since its a bit common for them to leave you alone to enjoy your food. Will always continue to come here for sushi!

great food but only one server is in the restautant. slow service kind of annoyed me since i was starving to death - plus i cancelled my sashimi at the end because i waited for so long time. except that, the environment is great and the price is great. i love the coziness of the restaurant.

One of the best and my favorite sushi place. Katsu Don from the lunch menu is phenomenal. Highly recommended! Nabeyaki Udon is also one of the must try. Unlike many of the fancy sushi restaurant that serve fancy rolls, this is more toward a traditional nigiri style sushi.

The food quality at this restaurant is superb. Always fresh and tastes homemade. I do long for better service and atmosphere, as well as some designer sushi items. the best green tea in town by far. Friendly staff, although, not the most organized of places.

Simple high quality sushi. The most authentic sushi spot in Providence. If you want quality sushi like what actual Japanese people enjoy, this is the place. No over the top dragon monkey fried chicken rolls. Just fresh fish served by a friendly staff.

Its a cozy, authentic, delicious Japanese restaurant. Theres always Japanese TV on in the back, and Ive never been disappointed from anything in their impressively large selection. Its my go to Japanese restaurant!

Good sushi and reasonable prices! Small and modest but nicely decorated interior. The older couple who I presume were the owners made the sushi and were very friendly! We will be back soon.

Wait for 10 mins to be seated. Wait for another 20 mins and no one serves us. No menus, no water. Leave for the India restaurant nearby. Terrible experience.

Have been there twice, and been very impressed with the quality of the nigiri both times. Their rolls are on the smaller side, but they are amazing.

Limited menu, limited space, but excellent sashimi, sushi, and tempura. Definitely my favorite sushi in Rhode Island.

Excellent, simple sushi. This place feels like it was transplanted directly out of Japan.
