I spent a long time researching restaurants in the Lancaster area to find one that fit my clean eating diet for a day trip out on the Lancaster town. This one seemed to fit the bill with fork to farm and locally sourced food proud philosophy statements. I felt betrayed by what I found. I could not find one thing that I could believe was locally sourced on the buffet, and despite eating very little and being picky about my choices, my stomach told me, for hours and hours afterward, that even being selective and minimal, what I picked was processed food. I had a salad, which wasnt bad and hit the spot, but I knew there was trouble brewing. The only "light" dressing option was oil and vinegar, and the iceberg lettuce was mostly wilted, the spinach had those slimy pieces in it, so the only option was the romaine lettuce. I had glanced over at the hot bar and had sensed dread at having to pick clean, healthy items. I picked small bites or single spoons of turkey; roast beef; plain corn; something labeled "real mashed potatoes," which I swear tasted like the dried potato flakes I had in college or took on long camping trips; and Pennsylvania Dutch pork and sauerkraut. It is now 5 hours later, and my stomach is still yelling at me. None of these items were fresh or from local farms that arent contracted with large corporations, except maybe the mushrooms in the salad bar, but I doubt it. I lead a clean eating lifestyle, which means no preservatives, which is why I picked this place based on their description. Even if my taste betrayed me, my stomach has not. This is not farm fresh. The good star is for the service. The waitress was friendly, timely, and left me thinking I was treated respectfully as a guest.

I have to say that I usually have a great experience eating here. The food has always been excellent, as well as the service. Unfortunately, this is the visit I am reviewing, and our experience didnt meet our expectaions. The hostess who directed us to our table was very nice, as was the cashier at the end of our meal. The rest of our so-so visit began with our server, who wasnt very personable. Our order reached our table correct, but just wasnt as good as on previous visits. One guest who ordered chipped beef on toast had to send it back as it was cold - a first for us at this establishment. Please remember that this was one bad visit out of many, many good ones, and Ive had much worse experiences at other places. This is still a great restaurant with a lot of good food on the menu. Give it a try - if my review had been one visit earlier I would have given it 5 stars plus 2!!

How can a restaurant tote themselves as serving home made food when they cant even answer a simple question about if there is milk in any of their food?! We went here with someone who has lactose intolerance and the a simple question about whats in the salad dressing couldnt even be answered by the head cook or the manager! Not even our server could tell us if anything was free from milk products. When someone claims that their restaurant is serving home made food shouldnt the cooks know exactly whats inside their recipies? When a customer come into your location with any kind of allergy, the entire staff should be able to either answer or hand you a guide of food that possibly contains allergins. This is not something hard to do. We come to Bird in Hand often however, this is one restaurant that we will never be returning Too!!

We had a really nice salad and sandwich for lunch today at their bakery and cafe so decided to try dinner at the restaurant. BAD decision. My husband ordered a veggie burger with cheese and French fries with a side of pickled beets. Burger came on a dry bun, no mayo or mustard, no lettuce or tomato or pickles and no French fries, just a handful of potato chips. My grilled salmon came without the white sauce, no lemon and was dry. We ordered a second veggie cheese burger with fries to go and when the waitress brought it out it was missing the cheese and had chips instead of fries. We were never asked if we wanted drink refills by the waitress who seemed preoccupied and uncaring. Perhaps they only want you to order the buffet so their job is much easier. I have never left a 10% tip and now think it was too much.

I have come here before and I always get the smorgasbord because you have a lot of options. Normally its really good but my past experience has been disappointing. Our hostess was expectionally respectful and polite. The table was clean and the buffet was clean too. All the staff was outstanding! The reason I give this restaurant 3 stars is because the food was not as good as I remembered. Basically all there was was salad, chicken, mashed potatoes, and rolls. Maybe its because I had the lunch buffet and not the dinner that there wasnt as many options but I was disappointed. I must say though that the dessert is phenomenal! Their shoefly pie is amazing! I would recommend but will try just the dinner buffet from now on.

This is a place that you go when you are hungry. Large portions and especially the buffet will leave you completely stuffed. Whether the staff are really Amish or not, I dont know. But the food selection has a lot of Amish specific dishes. Remember that the Amish work very hard, as in manual labor, so the dishes tend to be gut busting and calorie laden so that you can make it thru the day. Staff is very friendly and the food, while not gourmet, will give you a taste of the local cusine.

If I could give this a TWO and A HALF STAR rating I would, yet THREE is generous by my standards. I tried this place and their smorgasbord out in the summer of 2013 and it was decent. My one main complaint, and I mentioned it too, is the soda machine seemed to me on malfunction-more carbonated water with little soda flavor comin out! This was not good! The selection and flavor of all I ate was, again, decent. I prefer the vastly superb Millers and Shady Maple.

The restaurant was nice and staff was really friendly. The food was not as good as we were hoping for $20 per adult. The food was warm except the mac-n-cheese, it was a little cold. Some of the items on the salad bar looked like it has been sitting a while like the macaroni salad. We may come again but order off the menu. We will probably not bring our kids, it would cost too much.

My wife and I traveled from our home in ct.to eat at the bird in the hand restaurant expecting to get a home cooked meal. Instead we were served meals of low quality, consisting of canned veggies and low quality beef and fish. It was not what I had expected. Very low quality I was totally disappointed. Learned my lesson about bus stop restaurants.

Love the food here, the buffet is great for lunch or dinner (Im not knocking the breakfast buffet; just havent tried it). Another great option if you arent hungry enough for the entire buffet is to buy a burger or sandwich for $5-$6 and add the soup, salad, and bread buffet. The add on cost, plus the amount of the sandwich is worth the deal.
