My friend and I were exploring in Salem and we were getting hungry for a bite to eat. We happened upon this place called the Great Wall Buffet and I think it was called a Great Wall for a reason. Everything was bland tasting, The selection was meh and the service was even worse and I cannot describe the food quality in polite company. They had sushi, my favorite, but it was foul tasting filled so much with rice I cannot honestly see how they could even call it sushi. We arrived at that awkward time just after lunch and into dinner and they put the "good stuff" out but that was equally disgusting. In the back of my mind I was thinking you get what you pay for but the dinner food was just as bad as the lunch food and was not worth the increased price for the dinner food and for the increased price of the meal it was certainly not worth it. The service was sub standard and they only came by to remove the dishes and hand us the bill, even when I left my empty cup to suggest a refill of my beverage (a hint to most dining establishments to ask for a refill without asking) they just ignored it. If you are considering going here dont, there are better values in Salem and if you have to go over the "Great Wall" for a unlimited buffet at a fantastic value and great service you will receive neither.

I have worked as a waiter at this restaurant . We dont really get hourly salaries but just tips. Our duties were serving customer, giving utensils, giving and refilling drinks, cleaning tables when the customers finish, collecting the dishes and put everything into the kitchen, swiping the floor, cleaning up different parts of the restaurant, even the toilet, after the restaurant closed. Basically we had a lot of work to do and it was really busy on the weekend, but sometime we didnt even get $80 after working about 12 hours. It was pretty frustrated. The food are not really bad, but I would say that is not the real Chinese food. The price is pretty expensive on the weekend coz they make it 14.99 at anytime. If you are not gonna eat that much, it wont worth it. The waiter work really hard and trying to give the best service. I know it because I have done that before.

We have been there a few times . And tonight was by far the worse!!!! The food wasnt bad and I would give 4 ★ for the food. The service was absolutely terrible!!!! They dropped our drinks off and never came back until they brought fortune cookies which was 45mins later. After my husband flagged the waiter down for the 4th time to request a water WATER refill!!!! And as we got up to leave the same waiter looked at our table and said thank you. Then continued to look at our table and repeat "Thank you " loudly as we walked out. Because no cash was left on the table!!! Why because I tipped with my card!!!! Inconsiderate and inappropriate behavior from the wait staff. And you could hear the waiter at the doors . Mind you the manager did not stop his employee!!!!!

Used to go here all the time, Till they started getting dirty tables from lack of proper cleaning, horrible service to people who "look like they might dine and dash" mediocre food (if thats what you can call their food). Not too mention the waiters hardly come by to pick plates or refill beverages. Or could care less to all the Mexican children screaming and trashing the place. Taking "samples" from the buffet with their hands. Seriously people get your kids under check. And same goes with the establishment. Shouldnt be afraid to tell their customers their children are making it a worse place to eat then inside of my car...overall. There are just plain better places to eat. And I wouldnt be surprised if this place went under.

Just had dinner at the Wall. It is under new management and oh, what a difference! There were new items being served, everything was hot and fresh and oh so yummy! The buttered (and garliced) mushrooms! The stir-fried spinach (with garlic) was delicious. I sampled many items and enjoyed them all. They have a greater variety with plenty of seafood. Scallops, squid, mussels, crawfish, etc. They were also very busy. I arrived there about 5pm Saturday evening. I had to wait a short 7 or 8 minutes before paying and then was seated right away. Friendly helpful staff and the new manager is a gem! A big difference for the better at Great Wall Buffet on South Commercial.

Im John Cao, new owner of Great Wall Buffet for almost 2 months. I was also the owner of Great Wall from 2006-2008 three years. At that time I had a lot of old customers and friends. Unfortunely, when I re-bought the business back two months ago, I didnt see them, I felt kind of sadness. You know Im from state of Maryland(next to washington DC), big move for me to get to Salem again, but I am very confident I can provide better foods and services. So tell me what you like and what you dont like, and give me some more time, I can approve I can do it much better than before. So encourage me, support me and trust me. Let me start by saying the food is decent. I have been coming here for lunch for about a year now and the food has stayed consistent taste wise. The service from the wait staff has gotten worse and worse. The last six times they have ignored myself and whomever is there with me unless we get there attention. They sit on their cell phone and do whatever it is they are doing on them the last six times I have been there they have not given us out fortune cookie before we leave. Not that it is a big deal breaker. It would be nice if the wait staff would give the San service to a table with two people at it as they Do a table with three or more people at it.

The food was mediocre, not even close to being worth the $13.50 dinner price. The service was even worse. The whole time we were there the only thing that we didnt have to ask for was our plates to be taken away. Our waiter walked past our table multiple times while our cups were empty without even asking if we needed a refill. Most of the time we were there, we could see our waiter across the restaurant playing on his phone. One of my friends had a question about what one of the dishes were, but couldnt get an answer. The only staff they had around the food didnt speak English. Overall, a bad experience, and I will never be going back.

both times I have been here in recent months the ezpirience has not been swell. on the first visit the food quality was okay. the min issue was our full plates were cleared before we even had a chance to eat when I took my 7 year old to use the restroom or help him with his plate. this happened 3 times throughout the evening. a couple weeks later I decided to give it another go without the kiddo with a friend. we waited for about 10 mins to be seated before walking out the door. we saw someone multiple times and our presence was never awknowleged. I will not be giving them a third chance.
