So after quite a search on Google for traditional Japanese restaurants, I came across Sushi Monk and checked out its menu. Like almost every Japanese restaurant in the United States, this place obviously focuses on sushi, being "traditional" or "authentic" Japanese fare. And by reading the other reviews I can tell this stigma runs deep. Anyways after reading the menu I was pleased to see *REAL* typical Japanese dishes. I went there today hoping to have my craving sated and left with only disappointment. Why? For anyone that knows actual Japanese restaurants youll know that the really good stuff is either not on the menu or its written in kanji on a piece of paper stuck to the wall. I tried my luck and asked the waitress if they could make Saba Shiyoyaki (Grilled, salted mackrel) she had absolutely no clue what I was talking about. I then asked if I could order the Yaki Saba (teriyaki mackrel that IS listed on the menu) and apparently they didnt have any in stock. Finally on a last ditch attempt I tried to order what would have been even better than both those dishes that was listed on the menu Ika Maruyaki (whole grilled squid) To which her response was - "No, we cant make that it takes forever to grill because we have to take it out of the freezer and it just takes too long. I dont even know why I have it on the menu. Why dont you order some sushi we have a lot of good rolls." That was about when I hit my limit. After reading the previous reviews I am sorely disappointed at the customer service and dishes at this restaurant. After all of that I just decided to order some ramen and go about my day. It was honestly sub-par and I know for a fact that I could have made it better if I wanted to at home. Oh, and heres the kicker, they have a $15 minimum for credit card transactions. So I had to walk over to the gas station next door and withdraw cash just so I could pay for my meal. If youre looking for traditional Japanese food, and a courteous staff who is going to server what they have listed on the menu - here is not the place.

Complete disappointment. My wife and I went in last Friday night for the first time (and last). The place was busy, but since it is so small the three servers should have had a handle on everything. It took several minutes until we were even able to place a drink order. We noticed several varieties of alcohol at the tables - WOW, great selection we thought. No, they dont have a liquor license yet and allow you to purchase what you want at the Marathon next door and bring it in. So we had hot tea and water to drink, not something that should take 10 minutes to get to the table. We ordered six different rolls ranging from $7 - $12. Typical prices as you would see at Geisha or Miso. Once the food finally arrived, the taste was underwhelming. Honestly, I think the "sushi" at Kroger is of higher quality and this was probably the worst tasting sushi I have ever had. It wasnt horrible and if you have never had sushi before it may be just fine for you. A couple of things bothered me. The atmosphere was incredibly loud from the clientele to the people making the sushi. Seemed like everyone was drinking or drunk in the place except for us and the servers - and yes this includes the staff behind the sushi bar. Im all for a party atmosphere, except when it comes to people handling raw food that I intend to eat. We spent a shade over $63 not including tip and couldnt get out of there fast enough, which was a problem due to the slow service. We were there roughly 1.5 hours. Its unfortunate because they are so close but I honestly dont see them staying open very long if this is a typical experience. The two young guys next to me raved about how this was the best sushi ever. Maybe its just me, but Ill go somewhere else next time.

My mother and I met for lunch here today. We started off with edamame beans and two of "The Crack". The beans were OK but "The Crack"sushi was incredible. So tasty I understand the name now. Mom got "Bullseye" - Smoked salmon, cream cheese and jalapeno rolled in seaweed, tempura fried, then rolled in soybean paper, topped with spicy mayo and eel sauce. She let me try a couple and just OH WOW... I cant formulate into words how good they were. I got "Night Roll" - Shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber, topped with spicy crab salad, eel sauce and spicy mayo. I wanted to try this roll because I cant ever remember having eel sauce before. My roll was very good as well but truth be told I enjoyed moms "Bullseye" rolls much more. I also got a bowl of shrimp ramen to go so I could eat for dinner tonight which I am doing as Im typing this review. I can genuinely say that I havent had a better bowl of Ramen in all of Ohio. If you are in the area GO TO THIS PLACE. If youre not in the area now you have a reason to be. Id recommend anyone from the most experienced sushi eater to a first timer like my mom was before today. Youll love it just like she did and want to go back. Just like we do.

I would never step foot back into this place again. The customer service is extremely terrible. Due to it being my first visit, I was not able to find the sushi that I was looking for which lead me to ask one of the waiters. He did not help me find it, he rudely replied "its in there". I am a simple sushi eater because I am not familiar with the varieties of sushi. I decided to bring my siblings with me to taste sushi. One of the orders of sushi that we chose was fairly good but we did not like the other choice of sushi. We asked if we could switch the sushi out for another type of sushi and the owner replied "no because nothing is wrong with the sushi". I understood that nothing is wrong with the sushi but I did not like what I ordered and a good business owner would have replaced it and satisfied their customer. I was still required to pay for the sushi although I only tasted one piece of sushi. I was barely waited on during my time there and I do not feel that my service was appreciated.

Sushi Monk is great. I was introduced to it through a friend and have been a loyal customer ever since. The owners are incredibly nice, and they always recognize and greet me when I walk in the door. The interior is a little small and theres almost always a large crowd in the evening, so try to get there early. The food is insanely good. I have not had one bad sushi roll here. Its always very fresh and tastes amazing, no matter which one you order. Their fried rice is also delicious. If you go with a group, get an order of the edamame, which are soy beans in salted pods. Its a great appetizer. Their bowls of ramen are also very well made and tasty. The price-point may be off-putting to some because its a little expensive. I can only afford to go every once-in-a-while, but every time I go I enjoy it. The service is also a little slow, but its understandable since everything is made fresh.
