Im a big fan of Iowa Citys version, so I was nervous seeing the previous review when a bunch of us went up. I was delighted to find it just as excellent in every way as the Iowa City branch. Of course it is, because its the same families with the same high standards. The place is larger and very pretty. I had my favorites, spider roll handroll, fresh oysters (ohmigod, are we really in Iowa?), miso, and they were all predictably wonderful. Everyone was very happy. So whats up with the previous review? Lets take a look. They expected to get a fork in a Japanese restaurant. (Dont visit Japan. Every restaurant will disappoint. China, too.) They thought the tempura shrimp should be fried buttons (Really? Yeeikes!) and they could not identify the standard vegetables in the tempura. Well, allrighty then. This place is not owned by the Osaka people, and it sounds like thats a really good thing.

What a horrible choice for a restaurant! Although our party had reservations, we watched as a large party who didnt have a reservation got seated at our time. After being seated, we sat at our table for 20 minutes before finally approaching the hostess and requesting a waitress. At 30 minutes past our scheduled reservation time, we finally got a hibachi cook, who grilled the food quickly without any of the usual show. At the end of the meal, we sat at our table in desperate need of refills, plate service, and our checks. We finally got to leave the restaurant after 2 hours, and received no acknowledgment or apology from any of the staff. PLEASE stay away from this restaurant if youre looking for a pleasant dining experience.

Im kind of a sushi snob... and this place is the only place that I can come and be completely satisified with everything I order... the sushi is always fresh, delicious and presented very well. The owner is great, and recognizes us when we walk in... We love the baked green mussels, and pretty much everything on the sushi menu. Whenever we come back in to town to visit family, we always make reservations at the grill for great entertainment and time to be spent together. Its a kid friendly place, as well - but still allows a great time for adults. The service is always great, and I never leave hungry. Plus, the drinks are always up to notch and served promptly.

We went here last year for my boyfriends birthday because the first place we went to had over an hour wait. Good thing too. We are still talking about how much fun we had at the grill and how amazing the calamari was. Seriously, it was the best grill food I have had at any place. The guy at the grill was so funny that could be partially because he squirted sake into our mouth until it was full. They also gave my boyfriend a banana dessert for free. Bottom line: The guy at the grill made my boyfriends birthday a night to remember forever. Very glad my sisters boyfriend paid for the bill because it wasnt cheap.

Oyama Sushi is the best place to eat in CR, not to mention the best sushi Ive ever had! I am a huge sushi fan and love everything, even just plain raw fish. Their food is impeccably fresh, tasty, and well-prepared. The sushi chefs really are artists, and genuinely care about whats going on your plate. If youre going on the weekend, call ahead and make a reservation, they can get busy! The staff is great, the cocktails are great - this restaurant is the only one Ive ever been to where my drink gets refilled more than once during my meal!

I cant help it, it is soooo yummy and tasty, some chefs make it just a little bit tastier, if thats possible, and I wish I could eat there every week! Love the Hibachi grill, shrimp is the best, Ive tried the chicken, scallops and steak, the fried rice is very good and my favorite sushi roll is the Oyama roll. I also really like the chicken tempura appetizer! The prices are kinda spending, so its a treat to go there. I have been finding nice coupons in ads that help. They could and should change their name to Oyumma!!!!! Its yummy!

I travel the eastern US and sushi/sashimi is my favorite thing to try in different cities. The first reviewer must not be very experienced with this type cuisine. Not the best I’ve ever had, but certainly above average in the food quality. The service was well above average. Only place Ive ever had that actually cooked my menu salmon truly rare, including several "authentic" places in Seattle where I am from. Very much recommended from an experienced eater, not a rookie. BTW - ask for a "strong" gin and tonic....

Thanks to the reviews on here my first visit was about a year ago. Very few restaurants are this consistent. Would definitely recommend them to anyone. Iowa City Roll is amazing. The lunch specials are delicious and an excellent value. I just cant say enough good things about this place. Staff is extremely friendly, and the atmosphere is wonderful. Ive tried 4-5 other sushi restaurants around Iowa and Illinois and none of them come close for quality and value. I go here 2-3 times a week and leave happy every time.

OYAMA is simply the best place to eat anywhere period. Consistentanly great food, the staff are always sppedy and well experienced, and the prices are reasonable. I live in Iowa City and drive to Cedar Rapids (with my family of 5 in tow) once a week. Unfortunately the Iowa City Oyama is under new owners and all aspects of the previous owners have evaporated, thus the drive to CR. To any of the previous negative reviewers, great, dont go there. It just makes my wait for a table less.

Between Iowa and Milwaukee, this is the best sushi restaurant ive ever been to. My brother and I used to go here all the time when we lived there, but whenever we visit this is always our first stop. The staff is incredibly friendly. Ill either order the Salmon Avocado/Tuna Avocado off the Maki Special of the lunch/dinner menu or some of the special rolls. Personal favorites: Happy Angel roll, Iowa City roll, and the Nine Heavenly roll. But everything weve had has been really good.

Oyama is fantastic. By FAR my favorite sushi spot and restaurant in Cedar Rapids. Great service, awesome atmosphere, incredible menu (they do wonderful things with the rest of the menu I never order from (because I always eat sushi here) as well). Kid-friendly (or at least kid-tolerant; my children are rambunctious and loud and there are places we will NOT take them because of this) and very accomodating. Strongly, strongly recommended.

Fairly busy for a Tuesday night, which I think is a good thing for an off the beaten path sushi joint in IA. Got a seaweed salad and 2 sweet potato rolls. Both were decent and fairly priced. Pretty std salad. Sweet potatoes crunchy. Not a Veg, just still struggling with the idea of raw fish in the Midwest. I give 4 stars for a pleasant experience and value. Would come back.

Service is great; food is average. I was not impressed. Is it the best Japanese sushisteakhouse that Cedar Rapids has to offer? Probably. Is it the best sushihibachi youll ever find? Not by a long shot. However, the atmosphere is great and the staff is very friendly. You will have a good time no matter what. Its just that the food is nothing to rave about.
