Pretty gross overall. Everything Ive had here was bland and tasteless, and obviously very low in quality. The sausage tasted like soap...how I dont know, but it did. The coffee was horrendous...resembling brown water more than anything. I dont think they refresh the coffee on every brew. THE ONLY reason this place does ANY business is because it is literally the only breakfast diner in town that can handle the volume. I cannot fathom how the same people that own this place, also own the Athens Greek chain, which I think is one of the best places to eat in Mt. Vernon. I eat at Athens almost once a week...but Ill never be back to their Southside diner unless I hear theyve made some changes. Just because youre the only place in town and get people in your door because of this, doesnt give you the excuse to throw your food quality down the drain. These people are making money hand over fist for no good reason. If another diner opened in Mt. Vernon that rivaled the size of Southside, but had better food...I can confidently say that this place would lose half their customers.

Surprised this place is still open. Would have given it -5 *. Drove from Newark to try because of the good reviews. Cant say anything about the food because we walked out. Place was filthy. Bus tubs were on the floor in multiple places, right next to people eating, to catch the nasty rain water coming through the roof! Clearly a health code violation. The fact that they were willing to expose their paying customers to such nasty conditions and the overall conditions of the place shows how little pride they take in their business. As filthy as the front of house was, made me afraid the kitchen was the same or worse. Food poisoning isnt any fun. Passed Watts for this place, went back. So glad we did. Great food, wonderful service, very clean. I will recommend you avoid the Southside Diner.

Service was fine. Breakfast all day is a plus. The food could use some improvement. The maple syrup is not fresh or real. Its left out on the tables in squeeze bottles. The bacon tasted like oscar-meyer or hormel, better suited for bacon cheeseburger not a side dish. And the breakfast sausage was generally just poor quality. In fairness, the french toast itself tasted good and the hashbrowns were good.

This place was great! Had an eclectic mix of decor, homey feel and friendly people. I had the lunch special, it was a great price. Greek wedding soup, a corned beef and Swiss on rye, and a drink for under $7!!! Food was great, I was very satisfied with the service as well.

been visiting this location for years and never ever had a problem. always friendly service, never had an issue with wrong food. food is always warm. never waited longer than 20 minutes. a great home cooked diner! def reccommend to anyone. great staff and managers!

Wow can I rate below a 1??? What a horrible place the food is absolutely bland n nasty my kids could cook better food! All the specials r precooked n uncovered DO NOT GO EAT HERE WHATEVER YOU DO!!! And some of the cooks do not use sanitary standards!!!

I like this little greasy spoon. Cute atmosphere of eclectic road side junk. The food was not gross. The staff was friendly, and the customers there all seemed like they were regulars here. I just did breakfast here, but I plan on stopping here again.

Most of the food was terrible, only saw the server one time, got no refills (even though the drink machine was right next to us) hashbrowns was like mashed potatoes and did. It taste good. i would not recommend anyone I know to go there.

Generous portions, fair prices, Blue Plate Special breakfast is fantastic! Only negative comment, our server was really poor. Ended up pouring my own coffee refills. Must have been a bad day for her, grumpy, never smiled once.

Food was ok. Quick service just means some things are premade setting in pots waiting to be dished up. Bacon was cold on the Blue plate but sausage patties ok. Plenty of food for the price thats for sure. Only had breakfast.

In addition to excellent desserts, the Southside Diner stocks a wide variety of candy that Im unable to find anywhere else. When my nephews come to town they always bring money for what they call the candy restaurant.

The portions here are unreal! We go here every time we drive through Mount Vernon. They are always busy and the food is amazing. My husband also loves the strawberry pie which is big enough for two to share.
