Still bearing the painful culinary memories of being served (previously frozen) fish broiled with mayonnaise as a child, I normally do not like broiled fish. However, there is a cook at the Cortez Cafe who can lightly broil just about any kind of fish (grouper, mahi mahi, red drum, you name it), sprinkle a little Old Bay on it, and make it taste fabulous all by itself, i.e., no having to drown the fish in tartar or cocktail sauce before it goes in the mouth. This place also makes superb breakfast dishes! (If you like french toast and fruit, I highly recommend the fruit-stuffed french toast.) The portion sizes are extremely generous and I could easily get two or more meals out of one serving of their French toast or corned beef hash. It can get a little busy on the weekends, but the staff and owners will still greet you warmly and wait on you graciously if you happen to arrive there shortly before closing.

Excellent pancakes, cheap price, no atmosphere In late March 2015 our party of three had breakfast at the Cortez Café. The pancakes were excellent, the Belgian waffle was very good, the hash browns were good, the eggs and sausage were OK but nothing special. The eggs benedict were not good – the sauce did not taste authentic and the ham, although fresh, was sliced too thick. The coffee was OK, not fabulous, but strong enough. The wait service was good and very quick. The atmosphere was non-existent. The Cortez Café’s main virtue is that the prices are cheap ($30.00 for three, including tax and tip) and they’re next to a coin laundry, so you can kill some time having a meal while doing your laundry. We would not go back.

This place is a hidden gem. My wife and I are from sarasota . We love to take day trips and try local restaurants. We almost past the Cortez cafe but doubled back to try this local spot. Every thing was wonderful. The pancakes were amazing and omelette huge. Ingredients were fresh. We will def be back thanks debi your were right.

This is a local favorite. The food is inexpensive (especially compared to the other restaurants in the area) the food is delicious and the wait staff is friendly. However, if you go at a high traffic time you will have to wait because its a small restaurant. I couldnt recommend this place more.

My family visits Cortez Cafe once (or twice) a year while on vacation nearby - and they have consistently provided excellent, thoughtful, and friendly service and the best waffles anywhere. Cortez Cafe is the real deal - the best diner breakfast youll ever want to eat.
