We were there on 7/6 for lunch buffet. They charged $8 for an 1 yr old baby who didnt (or cannot) even eat, he was just watching movies on our phone on the high chair. When asked, the waiter said it is the policy whether the child eats or not, to charge half of buffet rate (never heard something silly in our life, plus the management of the restaurant clearly doesnt understand a baby vs a child who eats regular food. When asked to speak to the owner or manager, he said no one else is there and we had to pay. We are not happy and certainly not a returning customer. Its not about the $8, but the feeling of being duped and its a very unethical practice. I wouldnt have left the following below but leaving it anyway since I spent the time to write the above. We just relocated to Rochester only went there based on so many positive reviews, but no one else was in the restaurant except us, the waiter and someone who is working there (no customers). The number of reviews and the actual number of customers don’t add up, unless the reviews are fake or for their bar. A Sunday lunch buffet should have been a busy time for any Indian restaurant regardless of their service or food quality. To have no one means the restaurant must really suck. We should have turned away immediately but decided to eat there. Food had no flavors to it, we at one point even wondered if the so called Indian food is cooked by someone who really knows Indian food or if someone else just followed a recipe. Plus the naan took so long to come even though only we were the customers. When we went to the buffet table for dessert, there were no plates left on the table (even for main course). The waiter was not there for a long time for us to ask the plate.

I am part of an International Dinner Club where a group of friends dines out at ethnic restaurants. Last night we chose Amaya Bar & Grill, the whole experience was one of the best so far! We had to have an early dinner because part of our group was attending a show after, we arrived slightly before 5 and they were not open, a lovely lady noticed us outside and gladly opened the restaurant door and greeted us. We were in awe over the renovations to the restaurant; the previous restaurant at that location was dark and dingy. Amaya is beautiful and eccentric; the interior decorator did an amazing job! We first ordered cocktails while waiting for the remainder of our party, I chose the Lama Martini which was a very refreshing cocktail, they even used fresh strawberries! Hannah can make a killer martini!! We were very excited to try items from the Gosto de Goa menu. We ordered four appetizers from the menu and were in love with all of them!! We decided to order a different entrée each and all share so we could try everything. We ordered three entrees from the Gosto de Goa menu and two from the regular menu. We were impressed with the portions size and presentation of our entrees. Each meal had so much flavor and was cooked perfectly! We expected with already having 4 apps that we would have left overs but everything was so delicious that there was not even a bite to take home. Our waitress Hannah was remarkable; she was very knowledge and friendly. She even made a new drink concoction and let us taste test it! We also noticed that they serve Dosa on Tuesday and Sundays, you can not find that anywhere!!! I am looking forward to returning!!!

March 15, 2016 Amaya is an attractive restaurant. The ambience is quite pleasant, and on the evening we dined, the place was relatively busy with seemingly pleased customers. I liked the fact that one order of the Amaya salad was enough for two people, and the waitress accommodated us with two plates. I had the lamb biryani and asked for it medium spicy. It was not spicy at all; in fact, it was bland. And bland seemed to fit the Kashmiri lamb rogan, which was my partners choice, even though it was in fact medium spicy as ordered. Rather, it lacked the lively quality of Indian condiments in food we have had elsewhere, especially in London. My criticism concerns the cocktails we were served. My partner ordered a Sapphire gin martini; it was little more than slightly flavored water. There was hardly a hint of gin in it. The only thing you could say was that it was cold. I ordered a Manhattan. It, too, was a disaster. Hardly a trace of bourbon or rye and topped with ice shavings and a strange foam. The drinks had obviously been vigorously shaken for much too long instead of being briefly stirred in ice cubes. Martinis and Manhattans should never be mixed in shaved ice and shaken to death. To add insult to injury, when the bill came, there was a nominal charge of $7 for the weak Martini, but my single feeble Manhattan cost me $12. That, to me, was grossly excessive for a four-ounce glass of ice water.

When we walked in I thought we were in for a treat, but it turned out to be a big disappointment. The place looks good and the service was nice and friendly, but the food was not what we expected at all. Small portions, high prices, pretty tasteless and bland. We started with an interesting (but tiny) okra appetizer, then ordered a couple of traditional Indian dishes that weve had at several other area restaurants: Chicken Makhani and Paneer Akbari. It tasted OK but certainly nothing to write home about. The Naan was also a big let down. Freshly baked Naan is usually one of the highlights of an Indian meal, but this was clearly something out of a package and microwaved. Do they even have a Tandoori oven?!? We were still hungry (small portions) so we ordered coffee, masala tea and desert. The tea was weak, the coffee was tepid, and the desert was miniscule and way overpriced for what it was. When I asked for a coffee refill, they acted like it was a big inconvenience. Eventually they brought me what was left in the french press container from my 1st cup, now even less warm than the first time. I hope they get their act together and if theyre still around in a year maybe well give them another chance. Meanwhile, there are lots of much better alternatives in Rochester.

We went all the way from Syracuse to have good Indian food. But, it was such a disappointment. We ordered lamb rogan josh and lamb vindaloo. The currys were same. And trust me we had good lamb rogan josh before. The dish they served in the name of rogan josh is nothing like it should be. We ordered doi machh which does not normally contain coconut. But they put lot of it. For a 20bucks dish there were a very few pieces. We were not at all happy. We asked the waiter who said this is a rogan josh? She said " the chef said". Now comes the BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT. Their "must try" mango mousse which is nothing but mango lassi. We asked the waiter what it was actually since it was not mango mousse. Mousse wound be something fluffy, this was totally liquid and too much sweet. Each dish is priced near 20 bucks which is too much for the quality and quantity they are serving. We ended up paying something around 150 bucks and experience was surprisingly bad. There was no manager around to write a complaint about the food. They are not serving authentic Indian food. People are being fooled here.
