On Saturday night, 12/28/13, after I read the generally favorable online revues, my husband and I went to the Ixtapa Grille. The young female hostess met us at the front door and said that there were no tables avalable for two people and that we will have to wait 10 min. We saw 2 empty tables and asked if they were reserved. The hostess said that the empty tables were for a party larger than two and that we can only sit at the bar to wait for a table to clear. We agreed and went to the bar, actually a backroom, where three tables were available. We sat at a table there, only after the hostess made a sarcastic face. The food was decent and the margaritas were good, but I felt unwelcomed and the service in the backroom was very slow. I doubt my husband and I will come back and I am not likely to recommend this restaurant to my friends.

This was the worse dining experience, let a lone "mexican food" Ive had in a long time. Dont waste your money. First the margaritas had no alcohol or taste, zip, nada, not even lime juice. They tasted like crushed ice. Then the meal for both of us was the most tasteless mexican food Ive ever had. No spice at all, and I dont just mean it wasnt hot spicy there was no flavor to the beans, and the meat was too dry to eat. We tried to complain and just got nodding heads of people who dont understand english or were acting as such. So 50$ wasted and I wont even use the leftovers...go else where.

One of the best places to eat in Hamden. If you are looking for a great place to eat in Hamden, I highly recommend Ixtapa. The wait staff is friendly, the quantity of food is very large, and the food tastes great! I highly recommend the idaho nachos, which are potato skins with a mexican twist, and are very tasty! The carne asada is very good, so is the tortilla soup and tres amigos, which is chicken, carne asada and shrimp. The ratings for this restaurant do not lie. We all highly recommend going here!!

Absolutely NO taste what so ever. Had their ground beef Ixtapa burrito and the Chicken Ixtata burrito and they were terrible. Chicken was dry and tasteless. The beef was no better. I never write reviews...but I just cant stand to pay $50 for 2 drinks and dog food for dinner any longer....I even wrote a note to the owner on the receipt asking him to revamp the food...probably will never get it but theres always hope...right?

My boyfriend and I ate at this establishment today and it was fine up until it was time to leave I was bagging my food that was leftover. A roach was on the table and crawled over the silverware and went into my food. And when we mentioned it to the server all he could say was "sorry." We did not make a fuss. We paid and left. And felt disgusted afterwards so if anyone decides to go do so with caution.

My family and I went out to eat on sunday for our first time to the restaurant after reading great reviews about Ixtapa, once we got there both the service and food were great. However the next day 4 out of the 7 that went out to eat were sick with upset stomachs, vomiting, diarrhea and one person has food poisoning as a result of the food we were served.

Being from Texas and used to Tex Mex, id have to say this is pretty up to par. It was delicious! Almost just as great as Tex Mex. Love how theres tons of veggies with the fajitas. Only complaint is the salsa was a little on the mild side, but it was still good. Great atmosphere as well.

Nice atmosphere and wait staff. I ordered Tamales + Chimichangas... The tamale was delicious, better than ones Ive had nearby, but the chicken in the Chimichangas tasted like it was from a can. Rice and beans were good, not over salted like some places. Good value.

Consider this the go to Mexican restaurant in Hamden. Always fast reliable service, food is delicious, and for a really decent price too. Ixtapa never fails me when Im in the mood for Mexican! been going here for years... great for margaritas and birthdays!

Great experience here, the food was very fresh and the service was fast. This was a nice place to eat in. I will definitely be back when I am in the area! Ask for their pico de gallo, which has jalapeños and other pickled vegetables in it and is delicious!

First off! How do you qualify this as a Mexican Restaurant when they dont make fresh guacamole.... Second the waiter was horrible.. third how do they not have toasted plantain (tostones) or sweet plantain (maduro) I dont understand!!!! Horrible!!

Food was ok but my daughter and her friends went there to celebrate a birthday and after spending $60 and there for 1 1/2 hours they were asked to leave because they wanted the table. They had to wait outside to be picked up. Rude! !!

The best Mexican restaurant in CT. Family friendly and the staff is amazing. My go to spot for over 10 years. Have never been disappointed. The food and margaritas are delicious. Dont forget to save room for a fried ice cream. So perfect.

I ate here many, many times while attending a nearby college. Not once was I dissapointed by the service or food. They have good prices and great food. I wish I still lived in Hamden so i could eat at this awesome mexican restaurant.

Awesome food, awesome atmosphere, awesome service, whats not to love? Price range 12-15$ per meal. My favorite margarita there is kiwi, a very light fruity taste, but if you want something stronger, try a Blackjack.

Sangria is very good. Never seen any roaches. Food is good. Once again just like every other Mexican place. Nothing spectacular but good. Get a pitcher of sangria it will make everything else taste better.

Pretty good Mexican food, the best youll find in Hamden for sure. Strong margaritas and the excellent fajitas are their strong points. Id also recommend the fajita chimichanga, very good!

Ordered a chimichanga and chickenflautas. Both were soggy and had no taste. For $13 I expect much more than soggy, tasteless food. The guacamole was watery and so was the salsa.
