Weve been here several times and have almost always found the food to be excellent. In terms of food, I definitely recommend going there! However, the service is not that great. Our last experience in particular, was pretty awful. 0We should have known that it wouldnt be good a good night when the hostess looked at our party, grabbed four menus (even though there were five) and started walking toward the table. Once we were seated we promptly received water, but then waited for over 10 minutes before our order was taken. The other servers kept walking by and looking at us, but didnt stop. Eventually, the hostess took our order, although she clearly didnt know the menu. The whole night was pretty abysmal-we had four different people waiting on us, which was definitely part of the problem because there werent clearly defined roles. All the servers were just milling about filling water, bringing food, etc. Our food came at different times, we didnt receive plates with our appetizers, and we we didnt have anyone check up on us. Because we were there so long (1.5 hours) at the end of the night the servers were working on setting the glasses on tables for the next day and completely ignoring us. One server packed up part of the food and left, while another server eventually packed up the rest. After seven or eight minutes the first server came back to bring us the check then left again. Eventually, a third server came by to ask how the meal was and I explained about the service. He explained to me that there are having trouble getting an efficient system in place, but didnt offer any sort of coupon or telling a manager or anything. The cherry on top of the experience was that at the end of our conversation he walked away WITHOUT taking the check, which had already been sitting there for seven or eight minutes. Luckily, he didnt get too far before realizing his mistake and brought it back after another five minutes, even though the restaurant was pretty empty at this point. A big reason this review is so extensive is because the final server told me that they read the reviews so I hope that someone reads this. Like I said before, I love the food, but the service is disappointing. They just dont seem to have a clearly laid out, efficient system for processing orders or turning over tables. I certainly hope that they improve their system because I want to go back, but bad service makes me crazy!!

Since I am from Nepal, I and my boyfriend travelled from another state to try out some Nepalese food in this restaurant. I was really impressed by the Nepalese decoration, and the waiters were pretty cooperative as well. However, I was not at all happy with the menu. It barely had handful of Nepalese items listed, and most of the items are more Indian than Nepalese. Upon ordering Newari bara, it was served with raita-yogurt based Indian sauce. We didnt complain, and ate it. Then we ordered Aalu bodi tama, which also was very spicy and cooked in an Indian way, though the food itself tasted alright. Finally, when we ordered Bison momo, it came out lukewarm and with yogurt based Indian sauce. If one is from Nepal or has moderate understanding of Nepalese food, s/he will know that this is not at all acceptable. The main attraction of momo is often the tomato based and slightly spicy sauce. Our waiter was apologetic and told us they were out of the sauce, but minutes later somehow a tiny portion of tomato based sauce was served to us. The sauce wasnt that great and was very cold. All in all, the experience wasnt as great as I was hoping to have. We ended up paying about 40 bucks for moderate and not so authentic Nepalese food.

Pros: The atmosphere is warmly lit and inviting. Our server, Will, was very friendly and helpful. The seating is moderately comfortable and well spaced and there are a lot of interesting pieces to absorb during your stay (including the serving ware). If youre hasty for nibbles your quickly handed over a generous portion of papadums and cilantro-mint chutney. You can drink up on some housemade lemonade, cocktails, or a lassie. The appetizers are well priced at a $5 average and they come out relatively quick. They are also very delicious and well flavored. Cons: The cilantro chutney was severely watered down. Their was a significant wait for the entrees, though, that is all relative. The daal came in a small bowl with rice and was underwhelming. The vegetable chowchow was overwhelming, loaded with salt and honestly tasted like canned teriyaki sauce over frozen veggies and overcooked noodles. I would have been perfectly fine with these small issues had the prices been lower. But at 13 average an entree its not somewhere I will return. Summary: cute, overpriced, over/under seasoned, forgettable

My favorite restaurant in Asheville! My family has eaten here on multiple occasions and we have always been very impressed. The food and beverages are absolutely fantastic and exceptional quality! They serve a wonderful variety of Nepalese, Tibetan, and Indian cuisine (all of which feels authentic). As other reviewers noted, the décor inside is also beautiful and quite immersive as well. I cannot recommend this place enough! Especially if you appreciate quality curry and Indian cuisine. Some recommendations: Chicken Chili Appetizer, Chicken Chau Chau, Carolina Bison Curry, Sweet Rose, Nepalese Rice Pudding, and of course the Kathmandu flavor Naan bread (a heavenly, sweet variety of the classic Naan recipe). Oh and there is a weekend buffet as well, that will give you a chance to try all the different varieties of food they serve.

I think the place is great, but had one issue. We ordered a drink that supposedly had all of its ingredients listed on the menu, but it seemed overly sweet to us. When we asked about it both before and after ordering, the server claimed it had no sweetener other than fruit juice. After tasting it, we questioned one or two more employees and found out that it did indeed have white sugar in it. We try to avoid refined sugar. Upon asking for it to be removed from the bill, we were told that the manager was not there that day and so they couldnt do it. This seems unlikely to me, that no person in the restaurant all day can modify a bill if it is incorrect? I was told that if I wrote down my phone number that the manager would call me to talk about it. Weeks later, I have received no call about this.

The service was not the best. We waited a while to be seated, even though the restaurant only had 3 tables full. The waitress got our order wrong. We wanted an appetizer sampler but got a plate of pakoras and were charged for 2 extra beers. But besides the inattentive service, we thoroughly enjoyed our food. In fact, I would say, it was exceptional. Our vegetarian eggplant curry, chicken korma and lamb korma and garlic naan were all incredibly flavorful and tender. It was heavenly. I will be back for the food and the quiet ambience. The sloppy service is by no means a deal breaker, but it would be nice if they speeded things up a touch and aimed at getting orders and bills right. Bottom line: Kathmandu Cafe serves incredible food in a unique and an intimate setting.
