Great affordable place for lunch or dinner! I was looking for a place on the way to upstate NY and found this little gem. Reviews were very encouraging and they couldnt be more true. It is a big place with a very nice outdoor terrace that offers great views. Food is really outstanding - classic German fair with a modern twist. Delicious crepes, quiches and great burger. Fresh beer. But what set this place apart was the service. My mom forgot her bag there when we stopped on the way back from our vacation. She is visiting from overseas and had her ipad, iphone, passport and wallet in there. She really panicked when we got home. I called the restaurant and spoke to Dirk, who manages the place. He already had the bag in a safe place and was so kind to agree to go to FedEx and ship it to my house in NJ. That happened on Friday, August 17th and the bag arrived today, Monday, August 20th. We will definitely be back to this place on our future trips upstate or to Berkshires.

This was the worst a German food I ever had..!!!!! Not German at all !!! My mom was German. German potato salad is made with celery, onions a little vinegar, olive oil, red or regular potatoes with pieces of thick bacon. This was horrific!!! Worse than horrible....Some chef decided to put a lot of cumin in the potato salad...yuck!!!! who puts cumin in German potato salad ??? and it was not served warm... it is always served warm in Germany. To make things worse, then they put cumin in the sauerkraut!!! sauerkraut has onions, caraway seeds, pork fat and sauerkraut!!!! I dont know who the chef is, but it was awful. He should be fired!!!!: He certainly does not know German food. I will tell everybody that I know not to go to that restaurant it is not run by German people...even the Weiss wurst was cold and boiled to death..tasteless!!!!.. just terrible...what a waste of $170. Even the waitress was cold.... Chris Lindsay Poughkeepsie, NY

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Feels like a Bavarian farmhouse. Food was excellent. You go for the ethnic staples as the measure of a place like this:. Schnitzel, spaetzle, strudel, wurst, etc. The chicken schnitzel was nicely done, if not the best Ive had, and the pretzel was very light and bread-like. However, the beer cheese with the pretzel was exceptional, and the spaetzle and apple strudel were to die for. To top it off, I was able to have Kirschwasser (cherry spirits) with dinner, which I havent yet found stateside and was a big plus. All in all, this was a top notch experience.

The food for lunch today was incredibly good. The wait staff was polite, and aware without hovering. My small question brought one of the chefs tableside with a complete and friendly answer. And the portion size was crazy large, for the prices. The stuffed mushrooms are a must have. No, you dont understand. If you like mushrooms, you have got to taste these. Even though I drive an hour to get there from where I live, The Gunk Haus is absolutely worth the trip. And no, I dont own, work, or have any investment in it. Its a comfortable space, with great food.

VERY RUDE service! The waitress K. upon greeting offered substitutes for "pretty much everything on the menu", and when we asked her for help with a gluten allergy 5 min later, she refused to substitute the bread, or work out a suitable option for the person with the allergy. She became very patronizing, and went on to ignore us for the rest of our meal . . . She showed us who is the boss of the place! We felt rather unwelcome! We will not be back - good food is not enough!!

As a foodie, as a reviewer, as someone who uses Zagat a lot, if this place is Zagat rated a 20+, the new scale must be based on a max of 50 instead of 30. Zagat, youre way off here. Summer is almost here so views are wonderful. Thats the high point. Wines marginal at best. Food quality going in has to be questioned as product coming out is good at best. Its not a place of choice but obligation. For what it is and for its price point, its a good solid 18, no more.

My wife and I have eaten here twice and both times the food was fantastic. Nice balance of traditional German food done well and some solid non-German and vegetarian choices. Nice outdoor seating area for when the weather is good, and comfortable indoor seating with plenty of space. If you have a walker or otherwise need more space to navigate in, you should be fine. When Im up visiting my family, this is now my go-to restaurant.

Food is decent to great depending on the item. Dont get the pretzel appetizer, the spread tastes horrid. Otherwise, stick with authentic German items like the mixed grill (3 types of sausage) etc and youll have a great time. While the indoor seating isnt bad, it gets loud when full and the windows are tiny so you lose the nice view. The outdoor seating is difficult to get when busy but so worth the wait.

Went there a few weeks ago and they would not honor a gift card that was given as a gift. They had no problem taking the money from the person who bought it... Even asked if they would take a few dollars off the bill and they refused... Service was a bit slow. Few of our guests had beers and once the waitress saw the mugs were empty she took them away without even asking if they wanted another!

Really good German food. The spaetzle is awesome. The cheese spaetzle is like a really good mac and cheese. The jaeger schnitzel was amazing. We all ate very well. The best part is they will let you sample whatever is on tap before making your decision on your beer. Oh and did i mention their state of the art bakery in the basement. Oh and the amazing views of the shwangunks from their deck.

Top quality ingredients results in a top quality meal. Everthing is fresh and locally sourced. One page menu of great food and beer. Some reviews complained about it being pricey, but you can easily rack up a bigger bill for flash frozen steaks at a chain restaurant. I find that the quality surpasses the cost every visit. Make sure you try the burger.

Wanted to love it. View was amazing. Had authentic German hall feel..but Service was slow. The food ... Looked like German food but the flavor was off and underwhelming. I would go for the view and have a beverage. As for the food there are, other better German Restaurant in theHudson Valley

Great German beer selection, I mean for whats on tap they are pretty good beers. Nice outside patio when the weather is nice and tucked into the corner of the orchards with a great old German setting with exposed beams on the interior. The schnitzel and goulash was amazing. Great work!

Good German food in the "middle-of-nowhere". You have to work to get here, and we suspect there are more locals than tourists . If the weather is nice, there is a great outdoor space as well. The prices are a little on the high end.
