Several months ago my husband and I made a deal to not visit any one restaurant more than once in a year, in an attempt to force ourselves to try new restaurants and new cuisine. The great thing about knowing you cant go back to a restaurant no matter how much you like it is youre willing to try almost any restaurant (you cant go back to any restaurant no matter how great it was, so you wont be filled with regret if you stumble across a restaurant that has less-than-great food). Udupi is the ONLY restaurant we have broken our rule for and returned to more than once, just because it was too great to skip for a whole year (keep in mind that we have been to 6 or 7 other Indian restaurants, and while many were very good, Udupi is the only one weve been back to). The look of the restaurant is purely utlitarian -- dont expect any fancy chairs or tables... or much of any atmosphere, really. But the food is truly excellent, the price is very reasonable and the portions are generous. We were a little concerned at first, thinking the vegetarian cuisine might be a little bland, and asked our waiter to try to spice things up (almost anything tastes better if it makes you break out in a light sweat, in our opinion), and they were happy to oblige! Delicious!

Today we went with my parents for lunch. The food was okay--I would not recommend masala dosa as I wasnt the fan of oil they used. Their Gobhi Manchurian and south Indian thali was good. However, one incident happened which pushed me to write this review. We asked for our check and the waiter brought the itemized bill. After glancing at it, I gave my credit card. After a couple of minutes the waiter bought back just the credit card transaction and didnt bring back the itemized receipt. I would have trusted them but were six people so my daughter said they might have added the gratuity and asked me to ask for the itemized receipt. Immediately after giving me the receipt the waiter came running and took the receipt from my hands saying that he made a mistake without even looking at the receipt (which felt a bit odd). Apparently they added an extra thali in my bill---so please make sure to verify your itemized bill before you pay otherwise they will charge you extra.

I just came back from this restaurant and being a south Indian, i am disgusted to say that this is the most expensive and underserved restaurant anywhere in the area. Their quantity of the food Is very less. Ordered fried rice which was more like tomato rice and nowhere close to fried rice. I complained to the guy and that person was so headstrong and gave me a rude reply. Same was the case with thali, bhajia and gobi manchurian. At the end when i got a check, i told the person again about the food quality and quality. Same reply again. He was asking me to add a tip which i did not give. They were literally asking for it. PLEASE AVOID.

Udupi is one of the few restaurants worth going to twice. My friends and I have been working our way through the WHOLE menu, its that good. Its also one of the few places that we vegetarians can do that! That said, its really touch and go because none of us can read the menu! The descriptions are in English, but its all so unfamiliar to many of us. We never know what to expect and its always great food, a great value. Two people will be hard pressed to eat for over $18. The staff is great, you just need to understand the cultural differences/ small language barrier.

I just dont get it how there are so many positive reviews about this place. Food here on somedays is ok and horrible on few days. They will always charge you a food item extra called "TIP".Once my friend forgot to add a tip in the receipt and these morons called him back to add the tip.For a bill of 21$,he added 3$ as tip but these undeserving idiots embarassed him by stating that this tip is very less.I know there are not lot of indian food options around shrewsburry but please i request all to review on overall experience

The best dosas in a long time. The Sambhar and chutney were spot on. The thali was great too, Channa bhatura likewise. The businesses in this plaza seem to have moved to greener pastures, but Udupi was full of people, mostly Indians (which is a sign that the food is good). The rest room was clean but Spartan as was the rest of the ambience, but who cares when the food is good and the price is right.

Sure, the strip mall where Udupi is located is a bit run down. Certainly, you could see the unassuming front of the restaurant and keep on driving. If you do, you will miss out on an incredible meal. No matter how far out of your way it is, if you love Indian food, you have to go to Udupi!

Positives: Food is decent. Negatives: Absolutely no ambiance. Extremely unfriendly folks. They have been rude to my friends and me a on a couple of different occasions and are generally going to prone to do this to you. On the whole: Too discourteous to actually enjoy the food they serve.

We went for lunch and when we arrived we were a little concerned because the restaurant is in a mostly abandoned strip mall. The food was served quick and was affordable fir lunch. They did not serve naan bread at lunch so we choose another bread. The food was delicious and not to oily.

Great South Indian restaurant. Oddly , Dosa and Vada are very tasty. Try their Rava Onion Masala Dosa. It is out of this world, their "Thali" is good too. They are very authentic South Indian vegetarian place. Good place to have dinner and they are serving for the past 30+ years, enjoy.

This place is the best! Ive never had a bad experience here. Their samosas are delicious, and even though a lot of their curries are technically not south asian, thry are all very delicious amd well-made as well. I honestly believe this is the best indian restaurant in the area.

This place reminds me of home. This is authentic south Indian breakfast food. If you grow up eating sambar and chutney for breakfast, you will have the cravings. Not a huge fan of their chutney but sambar and rasam are good! Peserettu is outstanding!

I ordered 4 dishes and asked to pack sambhar seperately. They argued over saying they cant do that and suggested me to share from one box. Finally they cancelled order just because they cant do seperate Sambhar.....Are you kidding me?

Didnt let me know beforehand that there is a $15 min on credit card charges. Also they only take visa and mastercard. Food was ok. I was still hungry after eating lunch so the portion size was not good either.
