What a find. Although physically still a bit lacking in "ambience", the food, service, and Ethiopian music are great. We had the vegetarian combo, service for two for 20.00, plus the lentil sambusa, spiced tea, and some fresh Ethiopian cheese. The Injerra was fresh and soft, the vegie combo array--including two lentil stews, spiced collard greens, a salad of salsa fresca, a beet-based dish, among other things--was satifying enough that for the first time in the Northeast, I felt I had a found a place that could turn out to be a reliable restaurant near home. The owners served us and wow, what gracious, adorable, lovely people. The kind of folks you want to return to, the kind who make you feel perceived. An added boon is that if you drive there, there is ample free parking, and it is right on Baltimore, close to the center of action as the great transformation of Hyattsville progresses toward making old downtown Hyattsville into a lovely, funky, cool urban place with small town allure. (Wish DCs ward 5s folks would study that model for lessons for RI Avenue.) I will definitely be going back so long as I live in DC, and plan to encourage my friends in Brookland, University Park, Tacoma Park and Mt. Rainier to try it...its is kid-friendly, has some items for vegetarians, seems like it would be good for just coffee, was certainly great for dinner. A thousand thanks to the gracious owners for their contribution to the enrichment of our lives!

Shagga is only a couple blocks from my house so my family and I walk over for lunch, dinner or afternoon snack more than once a week. My daughter -2.5 years- loves the owners and always gives the husband a big hug - she also asks for sambosas all the time when we ask her what she wants to eat. We only get the veggie combo, but others whove had the meat say it is also excellent. Lets us never have to go into the city to get Ethiopian food because some the of best in the city is right here.

I started frequenting Shagga because they have free wireless, and I needed a place to finish my homework before class. To start, the food and coffee are amazingly delicious. As Ive become a regular, I feel calmer and cared for each time I go in; its almost that feeling you get when your mom or grandma makes you a delicious cup of hot cocoa because youve been out in the snow. I love Shaggas owners, coffee, and food, and I always enjoy my visits immensely.

This is the best Ethiopian food in Prince Georges County. It is family owned and run. The staff is friendly and they know their usual patrons well. The portions are plenty and the food is very flavorful and authentic. No dumbing down to cater to American tastebuds (that usually cant handle spicy foods) There is also free wi-fi I think. Ive seen some people camp out all day there working and eating. They also cater! Highly recommend!

After a long walk through Riverdale this morning, I stopped at Shagga Coffee on Route 1 for coffee (excellent of course) and breakfast. My wife had had Enqulal Firfir (Scrambled eggs Ethiopian style with onions and tomatoes) and Ben had Enqulal Besga (crambled Eggs with ground beef, onions, jalapenos, and tomatoes), with hot fresh French bread. All was delicious. Service was great and other clients quiet yet friendly.

I chose to go here as my friend suggested, and I was pleasantly surprised. I could see how the cuisine was similar to Indian cuisine. even the names were similar - Sambusas were similar to Indian samosas. The entrees were similar to Indian red pepper based curries. Hey Im no expert at Ethiopian cuisine but Id go to this place any day.

Got takeout, Ive tried a few ethiopian places around baltimore and DC and the food here was great, its also closest to annapolis where I am. Prices are reasonable too, and they have (spicy) lamb wot which really is a must for me as its my favorite. Likely will come back to eat again whenever possible of course.

If you like traditional Ethiopian cuisine with the traditional spices this should do it for you. Its not over-spiced and gives you the flavors. The portions are generous and the prices are more than affordable. A pleasant and friendly atmosphere. Try it youll like it

I have eaten here several times over the past few months and have never been let down. They have great food, easy parking, or walk-able location. Also, the owners are very nice people. In April 09 I heard this place recommended on NPR.

One of my favorite Ethiopian restaurants. Home cooked food. I always get the veggie special and it has some unique and awesome morsels. The coffee is good too, but it is not a Starbucks. They make a macchiato as good as any Ive had in Addis.

Been to numerous Ethiopian restaurants in DC and throughout the U.S. and hands down, Shaggas food is the best. Fresh, flavorful, and never greasy. Lentil and chicken Sambusas, vegetarian combo, kitfo, and fish awaze tibs tops the list for us.

I love Shagga! Ive been here twice now and both times Ive been very impressed. The vegetable platter with the sponge bread fills you up more than you think it would. Sometimes service can be a little slow, but I think its worth it.

Best Ethiopian food in the neighborhood! They have a wonderfully tasty, always fresh vegetarian sampler platter. You can always combine that with spicy tibbs chicken, fish, beef, lamb. Or other specialties.

My absolute favorite comfort food. Always tastes fresher than other Eritrean places around DC. Staff is sweet and seem to know I come here for the coziness because they make me feel at home. ^_^

Fantastic Ethiopian cuisine. Staff are warm and welcoming. Great veggie platter. You may have to ask for extra injera, but they will happily bring some out.

The slow service was a disappointment - Specially for the DC-MD-VA area. The food quality is more of an Eritrean joint than your typical Ethiopian test.
