They are Cheaters....!!! Beware of their grocery purchase...!!! 1) For the items that dont have a price tag on, they charge a price whatever comes to their mind OR is based on the person who is at the billing counter. Luckily they started putting a price-tag on most of the items in the shelf now days. The fresh vegetables they get every Wednesday, frozen items and many shelf items still do not have a price shown. If the price varies weekly, based on the market price, that is understandable. Here, it varies on the same day...! You ask one person in the back, they say a price; the price written down near the billing register will be different, and the the price entered by the person in the billing counter is different....! I bought the same item in the afternoon and then again in the night - I got charged differently...!! And this happened multiple times. 2) I, and many of my friends, had multiple incidents which proved that they over-charge. They weigh an item and enter a unit price in their new weighing machine. However the price they enter in the billing register is different - a higher price....!! For example, lets say you bought 2 pounds of an item whose price is $2/pound. The weighing machine will show $4 for the 2 pounds you bought, but they enter $5 in the billing register.. You wont even notice or pay attention; they are misusing our trust...!! They are misusing the fact that there is only one Indian store here in Cedar Rapids. Note: Do not go there to buy groceries on Wednesday evening, unless you want to spend 15-20 minutes standing in the line.

This place wasnt bad, but it wasnt anything to write home about either. The restaurant has no ambiance and the building is run down. The waiter seated us and brought us poppadoms - but no napkins. He also didnt bring our drinks or return to the table until the food was ready, Therefore, when my dinner companion spilled some of chutney on his shirt, we had no napkin to wipe it up and didnt have a server to ask. I had polished off all of my water (and he had yet to bring our drinks) and also didnt refill that until after the food was already on the table. The food was actually pretty good. I have had better Indian food, but the choices for Indian food (or any authentic, ethnic foods for that matter) are quite limited in Cedar Rapids. I asked how hot their medium was and was told it was pretty spicy. Unfortunately, however, it was mild enough that my 10 year old daughter who doesnt like spicy food would have eaten it. Additionally, my dinner companion ordered his Hot, and it was equivalent to medium salsa at best. The flavor was still good though and the food was fresh. However, like many Indian restaurants in the bread basket, you wont get it hot, even if you order it that way. I also ordered a glass of wine with dinner and there were pieces of cork floating in the glass. They were also out of the only Syrah they had on their wine menu, so I settled for a Stonehenge Cab. I was discouraged by the Kheer as well. It was more of an American style rice pudding than a traditional Indian Kheer. The Chai, however, is excellent.

My husband and I will never go to this place again, which is a shame because we live close and we love Indian food, and there arent very many options for this type of food in town. The first time we went they practically ignored us when we came in. My husband had to go up to someone to ask if they would seat us and give us menus. They sat us and EVENTUALLY came back to check on us. Once we FINALLY got our drinks and ordered food it took FOREVER to get our meals, and the server never came to check on us again. We were very disappointed, but thought we would give it another chance. The second time we came (which was a few months later) it was the exact same story. We felt like we constantly had to track someone down for everything- Worst service Ive ever had at ANY restaurant I have EVER been to. If you want Indian food in Cedar Rapids, go to Taste Of India. Their service is also somewhat slow, but at least they acknowledge you and put more effort into checking up on you.

As a vegan who is relatively new to the Cedar Rapids area, I find it difficult to eat out with my family because by large there are few places To eat which serve any vegan dishes. This is our first year in this area and the Taj Mahal is my FAVORITE place to eat. My favorite meal so far is the Aloo Pratha, vegetable curry with mixed rice. Its fantastic- and healthy. I also love knowing that I support a local business rather than if I were to grab a dairy-removed veggie-burger from Burger King, or indian food from some fast-food chain. We love this place diner-in, or carry out. We eat here once a week on average, and drive across town to do so. If you like to support local businesses, and appreciate quality indian food- This is your your place!

When it comes to the buffet there arent many in any setting that I could faithfully suggest. Taj is no exception. The flavors werent bad, but the textures and appearances were somewhat muddy. The "hate to wait" responses I feel are a little over done. It is worth it against their buffet. I am always tended to kindly and often by the waiting staff. The Naan is super and (my favorite) Lamb Vindaloo always delivers. The setting is a bit dismal but not to utter offence. Their grocery department although a little unkempt seems complete enough for the novice home chef. Their prices are comparable to local competition. A good experience overall!

A solid Indian buffet! The chicken tikka masala was probably my favorite with the goat curry coming in a close second. Spinach Pakora has some heat, which I also loved! Lunch buffet only goes til 2pm, though, so dont be late. And dont leave without ordering Chai! Its a dont-miss. Service is laid-back, but theyre kind and helpful. The price is $8.99 for lunch buffet and $10.99 for dinner buffet. Honestly, youd pay $6-8 for a full meal at McDonalds. So the prices at Taj Mahal are definitely not unreasonable... Especially when you consider that the food is fresh, authentic, and all-you-can-eat! Id bring a friend here.

The food at the Taj Mahal is delicious. On the weekends, you can have a buffet-style meal, which ends up being both wonderfully tasty and affordable. None of the food is too spicy. They offer several types of vegetarian curry, rice, several chicken curries and dishes, including chicken tika masala and tandoori chicken, and naan and pakora, as well as desserts. The service is pretty good; there is only one waiter, and he manages to take care of the entire restaurant in decent time all by himself. Its one of my favorite restaurants in Cedar Rapids.

If you love Indian food, look no further. This place doesnt look like much from the outside, but on the inside a kindly Indian family runs the place. They have great food, great service, great prices, and an excellent buffet that gives you a little bit of everything so that you know what Indian foods you like. If youve never been here before, I highly recommend that you get here as soon as possible, order their buffet, and try the chick pea chili. I dont even like chick peas, but that is some really wicked chili.
