I hate to rate this place with only 3 stars, but I just have to. The sushi is fantastic, some of the best in Joliet. Their scallops are incredible, and I recommend trying their Las Vegas roll. Their prices are all right, we try to catch the All You Can Eat Lunch, but the menu for that isnt as large as the Dinner, which is $5 more. The sushi can sometimes take quite a while to come out, but that is understandable when its busy & its definitely worth the wait. The part where this place kind of sucks is the SERVICE. Their is one "waiter" (& I use that term loosely) who has blonde hair and a horrible attitude, is the only reason we stopped coming here as much. He is snotty, rude & clearly has some kind of temper problems. We always groan when we are seated & he is the one to "help" us. He slams our drinks down on the table, so much so that we had to ask him to stop being so aggressive. We once had an incredibly long wait, and after seeing several tables who arrived after us get served before us, we simply asked what was going on. He makes up some excuse and then magically our food appeared. I also ordered two more rolls which never even arrived & he blamed it on the sushi chefs when it was clearly his fault for not putting the order in. He is a total ass. There is one server, however, who is fantastic. She is a tall, slender blonde woman who is polite & friendly. I truly have no idea how that guy gets tips or keeps his job when all of the other servers are so much better than him. Sounds kind of harsh, but it is true. We are heading there for lunch in a few days & if he is assigned to us, Im asking to be reseated.

The food was pretty good, and the fried green tea ice cream was amazing! I would give them all the stars for food, but the management was what made the experience really awkward unfortunately. I never post reviews for anything, even if its good food/service, but what happened was uncalled for and just wanted to let you guys know. They had a wobbly booth table and we didnt really mind it, but then because of it my friends beer glass fell and broke, so he picked up the pieces and we put some chopsticks under the table legs to keep it from moving again and it worked. Then at the end of our meal, my friend gets his check and he sees a hidden fee of almost $5 for the broken glass that the owner put into his bill. So he goes to discuss it, and the owner starts raising her voice at him saying it was his fault so thats why he was charged. In a restaurant business, things break, either your staff or a guest/child will do it. The owner finally ended up dropping the charge, but it was bad judgement on the owners part not to let him know that he was being charged for a broken glass that her wobbly table caused at least, its not right to try and be sneaky like that. Our server was fantastic though, she even told us that was not right, but we got it resolved. All in all, if you break something or whatever, make sure you check your bill thoroughly for hidden charges.

We eat here regularly and think it is not only a great sushi/maki restaurant but possibly the best restaurant in the area period. We live in Joliet but were unaware of Sushi-yas existence until my sister in law came into town from Japan a year or so ago. We have had sushi fn many restaurants and in different states, and of course my sister in law has had sushi in Japan as wel as other cities and countries. This place is simply the best I and we have ever had. I have never had a problem with the service, in fact we have regular conversations with the servers when the restaurant is not too buzy. There have been some staff who may not have as good of a grip on English as others but this is easily overcome. As far as the service times, we usually sit at the sushi bar and can tell you that the chefs work non stop on preparing the sushi and maki. It takes time to prepare the plates so I recommend that you order a little more per each plate to get you by. With the price the way it is and the fact that we are in the Midwest you might worry about the quality, I dont how they do it but it is fantastic. The fish tastes wonderful, I am salivating just writing this review. Try the sushi and try all the rolls, it really is a fun place to experiment eating with family or friends.

Owner of this place is so unprofessional! My friends and I came here, spent a lot of money and got treated like crap by the owner! She judged us from the minute we came in. We ordered some drinks and because of their wobbly table, one of the glasses broke and fell. When we were ready to leave our amazing waitress came and let us know that the owner added an extra charge to our bill because the cup fell and broke. When we went up to her to talk about the charge she got loud with us told us that the cups are expensive and she saw us place something to keep the table from wobbling but decided to still charge us. She did end up removing the charge and kept telling us she had the right to charge us without telling us she was going to. Im sorry that your cup broke because of your table, thats the cost of business. CUPS BREAK! That was petty as hell! Hope she knows shes getting in her own way because we were having a good time. food was good, we loved the waitress. If the owner charges for a glass it makes you wonder what it is youre eating and how cheap or old the fish or ingredients could be. WILL NEVER COME BACK!!!

Good food, terrible service. We went for my husbands bday and long story short he got very sick before our food came, he tried to eat and immediately knew we had to leave. Bc we had ordered all you can eat, the waiter told us they charge for "leftovers". It should have been $21/person....I ended up paying $82. The owner (Im guessing) came over and started telling me that she could just charge us regular price for each roll plus our drinks and it would be $0.40 cheaper than if she charged us the normal "leftover" price. Im incredibly disappointed in the poor customer service and the huge lack of understanding. She literally looked at me like I was going to sit there and eat all of the food in the restaurant by myself while my husband was in the car in pain. Not to mention it took literally 15 minutes for her to figure out how much she wanted to charge me. Ill definitely never be back here and I wouldnt recommend anyone go there ever.

The food is great...when you eventually get it. Ive been here twice, and both times, the service was quite poor and we waited a long time to get anything. Recently, our second order slip was dropped on the floor and nobody noticed. Our server didnt realize our food never came out because he didnt come back to our table for a half hour. He offered an apology, but nothing in terms of actually making it right for the 40 minute mistake. When youre not allowed to take anything home and youre charged extra for any leftover food, this kind of wait is a problem because once the food comes, youre angry and not really that hungry anymore. It seems that they purposely under-staff this restaurant to keep overhead down, and the service clearly suffers when they get busy at all. Despite the food being good, I wont be back. There are other sushi restaurants nearby that have much better service and comparable quality of food.
