The Best BBQ East of Texas? BYOP! Im not from Texas, but after living in Austin for five years, part of my heart is. Id often drive past this place in Ft. Lauderdale, hurrying to a class, with the windows down, the BBQ scent pulling at my heart strings and making me salivate. Finally a friend and I rearranged our schedules to be able to leave early and stop there before class. I couldnt wait! The scent was there, the decor obviously was trying be there, but there was NONE of the southern hospitality of my old home. My biggest complaint may seem trivial to yall, but I KNOW how I like to take my BBQ brisket - with lots of pickles! How people take their brisket is serious business out there. And I am not alone in this - I know a Texas sister of steel who was nearly brought to tears when, after surgery, her man brought her BBQ without pickles. BBQ joints in Texas offer them by the plateful and they are plentiful at the BBQ sauce bars - like ketchup at fast food places. Here, they charge what is almost 10 CENTS A PICKLE SLICE! The little round ones! I had to pay 1.50 extra - on my not cheap bill - to get enough pickles for my meal. They come in tiny little tubs that hold - not kidding - 6 slices. I asked for a bigger container. Even asked the owner. He refused - I had to pay 1.50 for 18 pickle slices. Not a happy cowgirl. I got an iced tea to go - big Styrofoam cups. Mine had a significant dent along the rim - about half an inch wide - which means, of course, the lid would leak. I asked for another. All cups in the sleeve had the dent and they refused to open another sleeve. Sure enough, when I got to class, the cup, weakened, split and spilled all over me. Thats ok - the skirt was made of quick dry material and the tea was nasty anyway. It was definitely NOT fresh. Not even day old. You know that oily, almost solid feeling that coats your mouth when tea is really old? Yeah, that. I didnt mind not getting to drink it. When we opened up our coleslaw, one container was full, and one was half empty. Same container, same side - seriously HALF the volume of the other portion. I dont get it. Did they run out, but were too lazy to get another batch or at least even out the portions ? Or do they just clearly not give a ... ahem, hoot? The lack of care frightens me - if they are so concerned with the bottom line that they are serving old tea, charging for freaking pickle slices, and buying discount cups, what else are they cutting corners on? Dont ponder that while looking at the ceiling above the grill area - at least not if you want to be able to eat there. And as much as I hate to admit it - the brisket was good. Really good. And so were the green beans. The collard greens were weird and sweet, though, and the mac and cheese terrible. But I did like the strange squishy " corn cake" and the spicy slaw, dammit. Why do the people have to be so lame? And it was an OWNER, too - not just someone behind the counter who doesnt care. Because of this - Im gonna rearrange my schedule even earlier and check out Tom Jenkins instead. This place definitely doesnt deserve to have Texas in its tagline. If you decide to chance it anyway, BYOP - Bring your own pickles!

Best BBQ in South Florida, the service is good, atmosphere is comfortable, and the Chef came out to great every table to ask for opinions on the food. The Chef is previously the training Chef for Cheesecake Factory, everything is made from scratch and so fresh. I went with a party of 8 so we had the benefit of trying & sharing a number of different dishes. The Loaded Fries were topped with Cheese Sauce, Bacon Bits Chives and Sour Cream, so delicious !!! The Jalapeno Poppers are not the frozen ones you get at most restaurants....best I have ever tried. The Po Boy Deluxe was made with juicy pork, avocados, tomatoes, Swiss cheese and the Spicy cole slaw....delectable. The Hog Heaven sandwich marries together Beef, Pork & Sliced Sausage, with Spicy cole slaw....exquisite. The Beef Brisket is slow smoked....this has to be the best brisket in all of South Florida, is not the entire State. The Pork had the perfect smoke ring, and as with all of the meats, juicy and flavorful. The full racks of St Louis Ribs, Baby Back ribs & BBQ chicken were heavenly, and quickly devoured by our group. We had just about all of the sides. The regular cole slaw is made just right, not a wet mess. My personal favorite is the Spicy cole slaw. The baked beans are some of the best that I have ever tasted. Collar greens were cooked to perfection. The Mac & Cheese I would just about rate a 8.5 out of 10. The potato salad had just the right sized potatoes. Corn on the Cob was so good that most of us did not even put any butter on the corn. Try the corn cakes, so moist and tender. Pecan pie had the pecans roasted prior to being made, so GOOD. I highly recommend this BBQ place for all of what I tasted. I expect Hickory Sticks BBQ to win a few awards in the near future. I know that we are going to be back many times in the future, and have already placed a catering order for an office meeting this week. They do not have Liquor, Beer or Wine. I also only pay attention to reviews from individuals that have photos and other reviews.

Fantastic place! I went on a Saturday at 715pm during snowbird season and was shocked that the place was a ghost town. I was nervous to eat there. Im glad I did. The decor is awesome. It has a great BBQ feel. You have to order at the counter and get your own drinks. They bring the food out to you and clean up for you. All meals come with a cornbread "thingie". Its a cross between a piece of cooked cornbread and an uncooked cornbread. Im assuming that its supposed to be that way. I didnt get sick so I guess it is. I got a sampler which had brisket, two ribs, a sausage, and three slices of turkey. The brisket was the best. It wasnt dry, had a great taste, and fell apart easily. The turkey was equally well. The sausage was really good. It was moist and didnt have big hard chunks of fat. The ribs fell of the bone and were just ok. They had the same taste of Chinese ribs though. They include a cup of a watery sauce which was sweet and a little tangy. It was like a BBQ au jus. The table had a bottle of real sauce which was very good. The place is decorated nicely, the staff was friendly, and the food was great. Dont pass it up

This place is 100 percent legit and offers real, honest to goodness barbeque that makes Tom Jenkins look like dog food. I tried both the Saint Louis and baby back ribs which looked like slow smoke barbeque is supposed to look (dark brown to the point of looking almost burnt) and tasted exactly the way ribs should taste in a perfect world. best mac and cheese Ive ever had a barbecue place, and coleslaw every bit as good as Big Bob Gibsons, my personal measuring stick for great barbeque. Im very happy to report Fort Lauderdale finally has a real barbeque restaurant. run, dont walk here, if youre hungry for barbeque. you cant go wrong.
