I really wanted to like this place but had a horrible ending to my night because of terrible staff. I was enjoying a chill night and went out front with some friends for a cigarette. The bouncer informed us that we could not bring our beer outside so two of us with beer went back inside. I was at the door and trying to explain to the bouncer that I wanted to keep an eye on my friend outside because she was getting quite drunk and he had no intention of listening to me. He tried to grab my beer from me and ended up crushing it and spilling the beer all over my shirt. I was infuriated at being treated like this for no reason and we all left immediately. I would suggest anyone avoid this spot at all costs.

This place is the opposite of the plethora of overpriced snobby DC bars that seem to pop up all over town lately. Theyre cash only and have Natty Bo and a bunch of other Midwestern beers in cans for just a couple bucks. They also have a decent selection of other beers if youre willing to spend a few more bucks. Bring some friends, grab a few cheap beers, get a seat on the upstairs patio and maybe grab a board game from the stack downstairs. Food here is okay but its typical bar food so dont expect too much. Oh and I think you can smoke on the patio upstairs but it wasnt too smoky when I was there. I enjoyed this place and its light impact on my wallet so Ill be back here for sure.

Hipster central, with plenty of cheap beer and liquor, and a beautiful roof deck. The service is amazing, and the food is great, but the reason they only get three stars is because they dont serve anything I really want to drink. Everything they sell is either mid grade or low end. This bar taught me I cant drink like Im 17 anymore. Still, if youre looking for good service, and a place to pound a case of Natty Boh on a roof with some friends, you may have found your bar. Three stars, yeah, but not a negative review. Its a pretty okay bar, and maybe it has exactly what youre looking for.

I absolutely love this place. Originally I found it on a list of places for singles to go, but then I found my favorite bar in the world. Wonderful staff, cheap beer (cans only, cash only), happy hour every day from 5pm to 8pm (Natty Boh cans are only $1 apiece then), no distractions (No TVs), upstairs smoking deck with heat, fun events, and a friendly crowd. Did I mention the wonderful staff? This bar is one in a million, you cant go wrong. Their bar food is cheap and good, too. I recommend their burritos, which are only available Wednesday night.

Just like everyone else says, it has a good selection of bottle/can beer at good prices and awesome food. My fave? Fried Macaroni and Cheese Triangles, definitely. Also, they have a $5 deal: a shot of Jameson and a can of Schlick :) The bar staff and waitresses are super friendly. Its pretty chill inside and you never feel too crowded. Maybe the best thing? All the old board games you can play with, including those boxing guys and three sets of jenga!

What a great bar. Its just plain fun, they have hilarious events that often give back to the community, the bar tenders are great, the rooftop is cool, and the clientele is usually a good crowd. The best times to go are when there arent a lot of people and you can just belly up to the bar and hang out with the bartenders/ enjoy the specials but since that doesnt usually happen my second favorite time to go is Prom.

Cash-only, all-can (impressively varied) beer selection, and surprisingly good food. There are nightly specials which make it an even better deal. The food is simple, but prepared well and doesnt come across as cheap bar food, despite the low prices (especially true on some of the special nights where burgers are $5 and seafood is half-off). One of the best bars in DC.

Without question one of my favorite bars in DC. Half price burger night on Monday has become a regular Derby night. After almost a year of Mondays, this place feels like a second home. Servers are fantastic, funny and always ready with a good beer recommendation. Jenga downstairs, roof deck glory upstairs, and most importantly of all, BUCK HUNTER in the back! Hell yeah.

There are few bars in DC that you can go with no frills and just drink some beer with friends. Red Derby is the standard for that formula. Serving only canned beers (with a 7 day happy hour!) and nice sidecars, Red Derby is a great place to go any night of the week to start or end it. Go here and head to the rooftop, spend some time trying new beers and enjoy the day.

This is a fun dive bar with rooftop seating. There are great deals on drinks and snacks. Im not going to lie ... the food is not great ... but the french fries are solid. I like that I can dress completely casually and comfortably here. It is a little out of the way, though, as it is not metro accessible. Overall, Red Derby is fun for a low key time with friends.

One of my favorite bars in DC. The food is pretty good (I recommend the fish dog), and the beer selection is excellent. Everything is in a can for that low brow feel, but its a really good experience. $2 Natty Boh is not a special. They have a great "shot and a beer" menu. I have been coming to this bar since it opened, and I really like it.

LET THEM EAT CAKE! To my surprise, I was greeted on two occasions with lovely pastries. Okay, is this a thing? If so, keep it coming! But thats not the only reason to drop by the Derbz (no one calls it that, I am trying to start a thing #trendsetter).. Friendly, attentive bar staff. And yo! I just found out they do #TacoTuesdays!!!

Red Derby is a great hole in the wall bar. They have good specials on Mondays - half price burgers and a number of beer + shot specials. The brunch is also really delicious. What better way to get over a hangover than loaded tots? And, if hair of the dog is what you need, their bloody marys are very good too!

The best dive in DC. Head to backroom for buckhunt, darts, and Foosball. Head upstairs to drink with the locals and take in some of the daily specials. Combos and dollar beers are the staple of the derby diet. Raises thousands of dollars for District Alliance of Safe Housing and supports local artists.

Cheap drinks - enough said. They have a pretty good selection of cans and $2 beers during happy hour. The rooftop is surprisingly nice for a dive bar and the service is fast and friendly, even late at night. Probably the least pretentious bar in Columbia Heights.

I came here for a friends birthday. Cool divey place. Large beer selection, though its mostly bottles/cans. I wish they had more beers on tap. The rooftop is nice but it gets really crowded. I would probably prefer to sit downstairs where its quieter.

4 stars because it is the only nice roof top bar in the Petworth neighborhood. The downstairs is just okay. Be sure to bring cash, they dont take credit, they do have an ATM downstairs though. Drinks and bartenders are excellent! Food is not great.
