Went on a non holiday Sunday, decently sunny but not even a particularly nice day yet the line was out the door past the patio gate. Was with a friend who choose the place so we got in line and (somewhat) patiently waited. And waited, and waited about 35 minutes just to order. On top of that, the restrooms are around the back of the building, very small and horrifically maintained. (Was only ~3pm so not near closing) In addition it is cash only so be prepared or use the ATM they have inside (3dollar fee). I am all for sustainable, local food but I dont thrill this place was worth the cost, wait and drive out past downtown Sausalito. They were out of halibut so the fish and chip we ordered used a lower quality fish (price was discounted to $21) they were crisp, 2 larger pieces and two smaller ones with a generous mound of chips (potatoes wedges) the fish was just way too saturated in oil, I tried dabbing a bit with a napkin but honestly it was just soaked through. The chips were less greasy, decently crisp on the outside but a bit mushy potato-y on the inside. Must say, the tarter sauce was quite good though. Also ordered the tuna melt, crunch outside of sand which, generous amounts of fish, but far too mushy and sausy, with too many capers- almost lost the sense of actual albacore and tuna. Came with shoestring fries, a lot of them but rather than shoestring fries they were really the standard thickness. Decent at first when they were warm but they got cold fast and then became extraordinarily hard, not crispy but just stale/hard. I like the outdoor seating and general concept yet unfortunately the price was not worth the quality of food, and I felt a tad sick after, definitely needed a nap after only half the tuna melt and 1.5 pieces of the Fish chips due to the heavy amounts of grease.

How was I disappointed in Fish? Let me count the ways: * Im overwhelmed by the mockery of the place. It charges the prices of a top-class restaurant in San Francisco, but its self-service with picnic tables. Its as though they assume were stupid enough to believe that the cognitive dissonance of actually spending so much money in a place will make us believe its "classy casual dining for the bourgeoisie of Sausalito". Id like to state its a craptastic mess thats marginally better than from drinking the bedpan of a leukaemia patient. * We spent almost $40 for self-service seafood, and received mostly starch, with little actual seafood. We were served mostly rice, pasta, or bread in our respective dishes. * Good luck in getting actual help on the menu. The bored teenage girl who took our dinner responded to our dinner questions with protracted guttural "uuuuuuuummmmmm" over and over until she found yogic nirvana. * The Calamari Bolognese had nothing that could be discerned as squid in the dish, just a ground-up mess that had no flavor. It was a $24 plate of pasta. When the waiter offered to take back the dish for something else, we took his offer. Minutes later, another kitchen worker came back distressed, demanding a explanation for why the $24 plate of pasta was returned! * The food itself was at best passable. Again, mostly starch, and I could only say the food was not *bad* -- but it only would have been acceptable if the price was one-quarter what we had paid. Do not eat at Fish, period.

If I could put 3.5 stars I would. The food was okay. Not as amazing as I expected from all the previous reviews. Our first dish was the clam chowder, which was my favorite dish. They had another soup option that was tomato based, we also got that one but the taste had too much spices for my liking. Second dish we got was a special of the day - baked clams. The clams were huge! Super chewy and fresh, but I think they tried to do too much with the taste. There was the basic lemon and salt and butter. But they added some seaweed and something else I couldnt quite figure out and that made the taste too complicated. This restaurant gets such fresh seafood that they should have just kept it simple and play out the freshness of the clams instead. Last dish we got was the halibut fish n chips. The fish were perfectly fried. The batter tasted a bit sweet that it reminded me of donuts. All in all, a great experience and a decent restaurant in Sausalito. The service was impeccable, the cashier who takes your order was very patient with everyone. Most people asked her about various items on the menu and what were her recs and she would repeat nicely what shes been saying to a lot of the people in line. Also the ambiance of the restaurant makes all the food taste a bit better especially if you sit on the patio. Its right next to the water and with nice weather, itll make your experience that much better.

Reasonably Tasty, Highly Priced I would echo a lot of the other reviews that I’ve read (after eating here)—it’s good food, but it seems a little pricey. I have no doubt that everything we ate was incredibly fresh, but over $70 for 3 lunches (and one beer) is a little rich for my wallet. And the no cash rule seems a little anachronistic nowadays. That being said, the sandwiches were large and very tasty. However, I was disappointed with my Fish Tacos. There were vary generous portions of grilled fish, however, they were so generous that they overwhelmed the small tortillas. So, it was basically inedible as a taco—what I consider a ‘hand meal’—and had to be eaten with a knife and fork. For me, this spoils the flavor experience—I ended up with a bunch of food all over my plate, without the nice balance of fish, cabbage, tortilla, sauce that I’d expect from a taco. It seemed I ended up with a bite of each thing, one at a time. So, larger tortillas, please! Food was quickly prepared and delivered (you order at the counter, get a number, find a table). There was a constant line of people, often 15-20 deep, but it seemed to flow pretty quickly. It’s a great location, and a wonderful deck to sit and look at the boats and the bay, but to be honest, I’ll explore other spots before I come back.

Fish. Another instant favorite happened upon during a recent visit to the Bay Area. It was a last-minute gamble discovered through Google Maps while standing at Battery Spencer early on a Friday evening. I visited with a group of friends and we were all pleasantly surprised how perfectly this met our needs. Apart from Fish, the marina area was essentially deserted - no cars, no people, it was wonderfully quiet and relaxed, right there on the waterfront. I dont know if that is normal, but it was awesome. Tons of available free parking - so simple. What a great way to chill out after a big day. The patio offers large, picnic table seating, so we had no problem gathering as a group of six for a laid-back, outdoor dinner. I opted for the fish and chips with lemonade. Yes. This was a good choice! Plus, all of the (huge) salads and other items I saw people enjoying at other tables looked equally inviting. As a huge bonus (for me), the speakers were calmly piping out lazy guitar blues - the mellow, Mississippi kind of stuff and other varieties (think Fred McDowell, John Hurt, Stefan Grossman and similar). I *loved* this place!! I will make an out-of-the-way effort to stop here again on any future trip into the area. Not to be missed.
