We came here to celebrate Thanksgiving based on our experience at the Chart House in Lake Tahoe, CA. We appreciated the friendly staff opening the doors for us, greeting us, sitting us down and all that, but what we didnt appreciate was a meal that did not meet the standards that the Chart House is supposed to stand for. Our chairs were not even from the Chart House. They were from a conference room or meeting room. It was like we were the extra people they needed to fit in the room, even though at the time we arrived, it wasnt very packed on the downstairs level. The views were beautiful. The mixed drinks were great. The service, ok. The waiter lacked enthusiasm for his work and didnt seemed happy to be there. It was like he was going through the motions. He was polite though. We felt a bit rushed, from ordering our drinks to trying to enjoy the bread. After the bread was served, not much time passed before they set our meals down in front of us. The food was not very hot. The stuffing, sweet potato and creamed spinach was fine, average. The turkey was pretty dry, plus they hardly poured any gravy on top. The pecan pie tasted like something out of a box with a lot of corn syrup, plus it was served cold. The spirit was lacking in the food. It tasted like it came from an assembly line. What really bothers me is when a patrons good will is broken by restaurants like this. When patrons come in to pay a little more for their meal, showing good will, the service and meal they receive should follow. The coffee was burnt and left an aftertaste of burnt cigarettes. Who wants to leave a restaurant with that taste in their mouths? How embarrassing! Did our waiter not notice that the coffee pot was sitting that long on the burner with a little bit left to serve? He could not get coffee from a fresher pot, especially for $3.25 for a small cup? Maybe it was not his fault and another server brought it out to him. It was the worst coffee weve tried in Portland. We had plans to come here more frequently and bring guests, but if a basic Thanksgiving dinner cannot come out right, then I dont feel confident that the other dishes would either. Our Thanksgiving experience in Lake Tahoe was by far light years better.

No problem making a last-minute reservation. Friendly valet service and front-desk people. Were shown to a raised-tier table overlooking the river--lovely view. Greeted quickly by our server. We each had a glass of wine, house pinot and house zin, both quite satisfactory. It was a bit slow getting our appetizer, soup and entrees. The appetizer was wonderful (kimchee calamari). Clam chowder was so-so; have had better on the coast. They were out of lobster bisque. We ordered brown-butter mahi mahi with brussel sprouts and a shrimp plate with three different kinds of shimp with a scoop of ginger rice. The mahi mahi was cooked perfectly--just the right tenderness without being mushy. The brussel sprouts were an advertisement for people who dont like brussel sprouts to try them--was absolutely spectacular. However, someone had gotten a little too enthusiastic with the butter. It would have been better with half that much. The entree with three different types of shrimp included coconut-battered shrimp (excellent), as well as grilled on a cedar plank and covered with corn salsa (also quite good) and shrimp stuffed with crab stuffing (not something Im personally fond of, but the shrimp were very good). Three dipping sauces came with the shrimp--coconut, sweet chili and teriyaki/soy sauce. I never did get to the ginger rice--I was full. To complete our supper, we had espresso and marionberry sorbet. The espresso was weak, closer to coffee than strong, traditional espresso, and not steaming hot. Sorbet was very sweet. I should emphasize that we had a great time, the server was excellent at explaining the dishes and menu options, and was wonderful at making sure we had everything we needed. She could only serve the food as quickly as the kitchen can prepare it, so its not her fault the food didnt arrive a little more timely. All in all, good experience, and wed go back.

We went there for a company party and they clearly overbooked the restaurant to make up for the whole bar being rented out for a party. After being seated, they decided to add a table to our dinning area to where we were back-to-back with the people at the table behind us. Packing us in like sardines made it so our waitress had to go all the way around the dining room just to service the other end of our table and it effected service tremendously. When our meals came out, nobody asked how everything was, if we needed anything, ect. or else we would have told them they forgot one of our guests meals completely and that our food was cold. We sat there waiting for a good 10-15 minutes before anyone came by to ask if we needed anything. Also, I dont know why they would ever serve king crab legs without cutting them first. As a former chef myself, I know this is standard. Our waitress told us that they should have been. Trying to break them open was messy and a lot more work than their price tag should allow, if were being honest. Overall, I was very disappointed in the quality of food, it being cold, and management deciding to cram the dining room. Theres much better restaurants in Portland at a fraction of the price.

Positives: The view is amazing. The food is wonderful. Lounge will transfer your tab up to your table when the reservations are ready. AMAZING lobster bisque. Negatives: Price and service. The lounge was not very professional and were confused on how to make my drink (Kettle One Vodka on the rocks) Tough one, I know. They charge for a glass of soda water, as if everything else we are ordering isnt enough. Our waiter started off strong and was very attentive. After our appetizers he began to drift...didnt clear our plates for some time, had to ask another waiter for drinks and water because we had not been checked on in so long. We were given our bill and still wanted another glass of wine but we were not asked, the bill was just dropped and he took off. Finally we were able to flag him down (after 7-8 minutes) and order our wine. He made it a point to hurry a new bill over to us and once he saw me place my car in the folder he was on it like a hawk. I HATE when you get poor service, but once they see you paying all of a sudden they find time to make it to your table! Overall, NOT worth $100-$200 for dinner with poor service. If you get a good waiter though, it could be great.

I would have given it a 4 star as the food was pretty good. Unfortunately, it is Valet only, and the Valet scratched my car. I picked up the car when it was dark (they have limited lighting) and noticed there was a deep scratch first thing in the morning (I hadnt driven anywhere else before or after dinner). I immediately called in the morning and they apologized and connected me with "corporate" chart house. Corporate called back and wouldnt comment if they had even asked the Valet about it. They just kept saying "since you didnt report it before you drove off there is nothing I can do" I kept asking if they had at least talked to the Valet to confirm they dont remember anything. If they had, and the Valet said they dont remember doing it, I probably would have been ticked, but understood. Instead they refused to answer the question and just kept saying "since you didnt report it before you drove off there is nothing I can do." Bottom line, if you go there, do a quick visual inspection of your car BEFORE leaving the Valet area.
