The only reason this place doesnt get five stars is because the very first time I went there, my friends best friend had come out here from Japan and he was dying to try clam chowder. We really wanted their cream based clam chowder, but the waitress kept saying, "Oh, its not ready yet, its not ready yet." Then finally she came out and said that it wasnt going to be available. Im like, "WTF?" So we were forced to try some of their other chowders. We ended up ordering two bread bowls of crab and corn chowder and my other friend ordered the shrimp and fennel chowder. And man was that chowder delicious!!!!!!! It almost made up for not being able to order what we really wanted. I can still taste that crab and corn chowder and its been 4 years now! I went back once again since the first time, this time everything was available and if anytime someone comes to me asking where the good chowder is in the city, I tell them to go there. The other appetizers, onion rings, fries, salads, etc. were delicious, too, and everything is affordably priced. The decor of the place is very interesting, love all those boats hanging from the ceiling! And the service is pretty quick too. Great little spot to go to if youre down sightseeing or shopping in Fishermans wharf, and want good, unique chowders!

Whats up with the bad service here? I was part of a large group outside. Everyone ordered drinks and apps. I needed to leave early so I walked inside pay. I asked the older gentlemen to check me out when he got a chance. I was totally not rude or in a hurry. He had drinks in his hands and he could have said, "Sure, one second." But instead he punched up the whole tab of my group and when I told him I wanted to split the check he said, "I cant be bothered with this." He walked away from me and told another sever to deal with me. The lady server angrily tapped at the POS until she figured out how to split a check, handed it to me, and walked away. The only nice employee was the young hostess. I would understand if they were super busy, but the restaurant was only half full! With all the other good food around, I doubt this place will be around for long.

Friend brought us here seeing as one of us wanted to have chowder. Had the Dungeness Crab and Corn Chowder which was supposed to be an award winning dish but it tasted like corn chowder I have at home from a can but with crab meat instead of chicken and thats okay since I love Chunky soup.. Wish I got the New England Clam Chowder instead. Linguine with Manila Clams was my main course and it had a lot of clams! Unfortunately I had to fish out the meat from every single one but besides that the dish was good plus it came with some garlic bread too. Service was good since it wasnt super busy but I guess what made us upset the most was they charged 19% gratuity for large parties of people which isnt like other place that charge 18%.

Ambiance is nice, service is good, and the crab & corn chowder lived up to is great reputation. However, the entree leaves something to be to desired. We ordered the seafood trio and the whole dish was slathered in a buttery sauce. I dont think Gordon Ramsay would approve. I did not appreciate my dry salmon and relatively flavorless crabcake floating in buttercream. The spinach was limp and also drowned in the creamy concoction. I would recommend you either withhold the sauce altogether, order it on the side, or perhaps stick with your bread and chowder. I REALLY wanted to like the Blue Mermaid, but after receiving my ticket, I was left a bit blue.

Worst service I have ever seen in my life. The management is very poor and places its staff in different sections in and out on the patio, this means the servers cannot adequately serve the needs of the customers. I witnessed five different couples and families leave without being greeted. It was such terrible service I became comical, my family started to play over-under if the people sat would get up and leave then if the stayed how long it would take to get their drinks. For the many options along the wharf, walk past this over rated restaurant and avoid the terrine service.

Weve been in town for a week, and have tried a lot of seafood restaurants at Fishermans Wharf. This was by the far the best meal of all. Go there--order the "Trio"--which includes a fabulous crab cake, salmon, and grilled shrimp, fresh green beans, and cole slaw made at the point of service. Also, the crab and corn chowder was the tastiest Ive tried all week--and I have been ordering a cup at every lunch and supper wherever we dine! I wish the chowder was offered with the meal, like many restaurants do, but it was worth the extra cost. Fantastic meal!

Ive been here twice, once a few years ago and just recently. Both times I was not left wanting. I have tried the clam chowder in bread bowl which was awesome, and also the chowder sampler, really good if you cant decide. A little pricey of a place, but it is San Fran and waterfront. I also tried the baked crab dip which was so good! Really good place, a bit pricey but expected. Also the waiter forgot to bring our dip until after the entree, but was super nice about it and gave us a discount, and it was crap dip, so you can have that at any time haha

Not sure if dinner is any better but came here for breakfast as we are staying at the hotel next door and it was awful. The salt shacker exploded all over half my breakfast and the waiter couldnt care less. They offered to fill our glasses with juice only to look at the bill and see $5 per glass was charged! Slack service. Then came back to give it another go just for a drink and yet again the bar tender was on another planet. Even so to leave the beer nozzle down and only realised when I told him.

The omelette was very average and they offer you a small glass of juice which is concentrate and luke-warm and when you receive the bill you will notice that it also cost $4. My partner had the salt shaker break all over her food and table, the food wasnt edible and the waiter acknowledge that the shaker was actually broken. The food wasnt replaced nor was it removed from the bill. We only had breakfast here so Im not commenting on the dinner, which may be a completely different experience.

My husband and I stopped into Blue Mermaid for a quick lunch before heading to the Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival. We both opted for chowder. Feeling nostalgic, I ordered the New England Clam Chowder and my husband, feeling adventurous, decided on the Dungeness Crab and Corn Chowder. I would have given the NE chowder a B, but the Crab & Corn was definitely an A+. It was sweet, savory, and slightly spicy. Ill be coming back for more!

A lot of fuss for what? Staying at the Argonaut and ate here last night. Over priced and the chowder was just okay to me. I got the sampler. Two samplers, two beers and a wine was $85. Not a big deal, but food, service and atmosphere didnt justify it. I have had chowder all over the east coast, here and Seattle. Seattle is the hands down winner. Sound view cafe in Seattle. Check it out.
