I am from the Midwest where we have the nationally known American Royal BBQ contest every year where hundreds compete to serve you the best BBQ. The judges are strict. In Kansas City we have some of the BBQ places in the country. I was excited to see what California had to offer! Though definitely not a bad place for BBQ, Mission St prices are a tad higher than they should be for such small portions. My ribs were dry and not juicy or tender at all. Maybe it was an off day for the kitchen. I plan on trying it again and perhaps sampling more items on there menu. But its hard to justify spending so much when Coles BBQ in Capitola gives you almost double the portions at the same price. I feel like I was left kinda cheated at Mission St BBQ in terms of my food not being prepared as well as the owner probably would have wanted to be served. They do have a selection of beers.

Good: 1. The place looks great and the BBQ area so clean. 2. Live music everyday is great 3. Plenty of Beer on tap! 4. The staff were kind, helpful, and provided a great service Bad: 1. Food was disappointing small portions and high price 2. Music was too loud for us and makes it hard to have a conversation We got BBQ chicken sandwiches and a beef brisket. Beef brisket was 13$. I got coleslaw and beans as my side. Beans were good but the coleslaw was watery and flavorless. I make better coleslaw at home.... As for the brisket taste was good but the plate was unappetizing. See for yourself. Overall: I cant see myself returning here. But maybe you will have a better experience.

The food was delicious! We were visiting from out of town and had never been here but Im glad we chose this place. There was a live blues band playing great music on this Friday night, the stout beers that we had were good, and the food arrived extremely fast - it was ready before we even sat down at our table (as we were choosing our beers). I ordered the beef brisket and my husband ordered the pulled pork sandwich. Neither one disappointed, and the baked beans and potato salad were delicious as well. Dont be fooled by the portion sizes because you WILL get full. Will definitely come here again the next time were in town.

I was going to give it more stars last night till i woke up with food poisoning i should have known better the chicken was not fully cooked. I know this i have managed many restaurants and took two bites and realized it wasnt cooked. Sorry if your going to serve chicken make sure its fully cooked not still pink in the middle. Other than that was very good brisket, tri tips and pull pork very good and well prepared i will give credit where its due. Staff was nice and all around good place just wont return after uncooked chicken yuck!!

EDIT: Ive made several return visits since my initial review. Pleased to report that theyve been minding the quality of the meat they serve. Unfortunately, theyve been running short of beer options compared to what they boast. But theyve still earned another star. I generally love their food. Unfortunately, quality is declining. The meat in last nights tri-tip salad was almost all pure fat, for example. I really hope they pull it together before they lose my business.

The BEST ribs in town, but the WORST service run business in the world. They are always out of ribs, cant keep up with the customer flow; very unorganized and very disappointing to try and eat at this place. You need to have better management and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER run out of ribs. Why are you even in business if you cant deliver? Get with it, folks, you soon will be out of business and lose customers if you dont revamp your service and food control. FYI

Meat lovers rejoice! Mission St BBQ knows how to smoke meat right. Their selection is excellent of both meats & beer; sauces are tasty and portions are satisfying. The ribs, the tri-tip, the brisket, heck even the chicken, are all delicious. Even the supporting cast is exemplary - Andes mints and moist towelettes at the counter, top notch beams& potato salad. A bit pricier than your typical quick eats, yet worth it.

As a Texan that moved to Santa Cruz in the last year or so, I can say that the beef barbecue is not as good as it could be. That said, Mission St BBQ has some great barbecue. I would recommend going with pork. The sides are all great, although all a bit different than more "normal" versions. They have a great selection of beers on tap, including some local beers such as Ale Works. Definitely recommend.

A great place to dine in with great environment. Portion looked small but was able to feed me full. Besides meats, potato salads and garlic bread are two sides that I highly recommend. Visit this place and find out what is the "Smoke Ring" they refer to. Foods are little pricy though. The attached picture is what I ordered - the St. Louis Ribs Meal with garlic breads and a potato salad ($13+tax).

Good meat! The Cole slaw was terrible though as well as the beans. I love a good Cole slaw and they and this left a lot to be desired. It was more like diced cabbage then Cole slaw, really dry and bland. Brisket was decent but I spent $20 and walked out hungry. In my opinion for $20 you shouldnt leave hungry.I will not be coming back here. Not worth it.

Huge beer selection, great bbq food, but I have a couple complaints. The Baked Beans are horrible. They need to be revised ASAP. Also the brisket is too fatty, please carve more of the meat for sandwiches and less of the huge fat cap (I know is supposed to have a lot of fat in the cap, that doesnt mean I should eat it!). Overall 4.5 stars!

Awesome BBQ! Tri-tip is always perfect. Make sure to grab the hot sauce. Brisket is great. The beer selection is even better. There is always a selection of amazing beers. The side dishes are not amazing. It is all about the meat. I would rate 5 stars if the garlic bread and sides were a little more noteworthy. Can I make it 4.5?

What a disappointment! I tried their meat trio with babyback ribs, brisket, and tri tip. Tri tip was so tough and chewy and rubbery. They gave me all crumbled brisket and they were dried. Ribs were the only meat that was decent but nothing great or special. I paid close to $30 for this plate and I didnt think it was worth it.

Got recommended this place by one of the guys at Mount Hermon Adventures. I live pretty far from the place, but Im definitely willing to go back just for their brisket, beans, and bbq sauce. Their local beers were very good too, came by with friends the first time and they were glad to help sample a lot of their beers.

The food tasted good, was filling, and the live band was a fun addition. However, they dont have cornbread, a classic BBQ staple. Californians might like garlic bread but myself and the midwesterners I know like their biscuits and cornbread. The band made it hard to carry on a conversation at times due to volume.

The food was great; the tri tip was really flavorful and smokey and the hot links had great spice. The service was also really friendly, I heard a couple different guys walk people through the (extensive) beer menu and offer recommendations. I would definitely recommend this place and will be coming back.
