I am horrified when I see long lines of tourists outside of the Broken Yolk on weekend mornings. Yes, all these people must be tourists, because no local San Diegan would wait in line for 45 minutes for a table at this Dennys-like chain restaurant. Locals dont eat here. I regrettably ate here several times before I moved to San Diego and familiarized myself with the area, but havent been back since. Is Broken Yolk horrible? Nah, but this is IHOP-quality food at higher prices. Moreover, joints like this reinforce Gaslamps partly-deserved reputation of being littered with mediocre "tourist trap" cash-grab restaurants. Also, what Broken Yolk calls "street tacos" (ugh!) undoubtedly gives non-natives the mistaken impression that San Diego does not respect Mexican cuisine. If youre visiting the city, there are MANY vastly superior options for breakfast downtown: Luckys, Café 21, Sixth Avenue Bistro, Werewolf, and Brians 24 to name a few.

I have a weakness for restaurants that serve breakfast. While in SD I came across this place and gave it a try. The menu selection was large and it took awhile to decide what to order. The omelet was OK but a little dry. I find that I can judge a restaurant by the biscuit and gravy they serve. The biscuit was large and fluffy but the gravy was not worth much. It seems to be made with chicken stock for flavor and color. It is light on the meat, overly salty, and was as thick as paste when it cooled down. I had to use a knife at one point and spread it on the biscuit. Gravy should flow and stay fluid when it cools. The service was great and the coffee cup was never empty. I did find having a tip cup at the cashiers counter a turn off. I should tip for ringing up my tab and taking my money??? Dont think so.

I went with a group of friends and had a terrible experience. The food was great, when it finally came out as we ordered it. I dont know whether our server simply put our orders in wrong, or the kitchen didnt prepare things as they were written on the tickets. I ordered a dish without guacamole, but, when the food came out, the plate had a scoop on it. I told them I ordered my food without and they gave me this look of confusion. I then had to explain that I have an allergy and cant have avocado on the plate. My wifes food didnt come out, so we had to notify our server. When the food finally came out, the wrong side dish was on the plate, then, the server actually asked if my wife wanted the side-dish swapped out. No, we didnt want the food we actually ordered... I will not be returning.

2 1/2 stars actually. I was expecting a lot more since it was a Zagot rated brunch spot. The sweet potato pancakes were pretty good but they need a small 1/2 size order, two people couldnt finish them because it was just too much in terms of flavor and sweetness (from someone who loves sweet potato). I was VERY disappointed in the Border Benedict the sweet corn cakes were delicious on their own but ruined by the bland sauce and lackluster carne asada (it tasted like someone cut chuck steak into small strips with salt and pepper and then called it asada) coming from Los Angeles I just knew being closer to the border would bring delicious asada but was I wrong. The saving grace was our Cafe Lattes, yep $40 bucks later and the best thing was the coffee.

We came the day after Comic Con for brunch at 11, thinking we may have a long wait, but we waited less than 5 minutes. There are so many delicious looking food options that we took forever to decide. The country fried steak was good, though a little salty. Home fries are AMAZING. Border Check omelette was good (though the beef is also a bit salty) and the blueberry muffin is moist and delicious. A bit pricier than it would be at a more generic breakfast chain, bit also tastier in my opinion. They have mimosas and pomegranate mimosas, which I didnt see until I already ordered coffee, but I will definitely be coming back to get them next year. Good service, nice atmosphere, overall enjoyable brunch experience.

Let me first say I am a huge fan of breakfast but the Yolk failed to deliver anything remotely resembling breakfast. I figured that ordering the "American Breakfast" (eggs over easy with sausage and hashbrowns) was a safe choice. It was remarkable how bland the eggs were and how greasy the sausage was. The amount of grease that poured out of the sausage when you poked it with a fork was seriously gross. The hashbrown made me wonder how this place made it on the Zagat radar at all. The French Toast was raw in the middle and the oatmeal was served with raisins that were cemented together resembling pieces of gravel. Cmon yall, really? Representing San Diego terribly!

Less than average at best! I was here less than a year ago and didnt care for this place then. I decided to give it another try today and sorry that I did. High pressure service and cramped seating started us off on the wrong foot. The biscuits and gravy are the worst I have ever had and I would give the omelette I ordered a 2 on a 10 scale. The food was very bland and void of any flavor. Then, I was told that I couldnt use my coupon because I hadnt ordered a drink; though when I expressed my distain they used another coupon that would be valid. Im pretty sure that this place survives on tourists, and I am afraid that I wont be back....

Oh my word this place is delicious!!!!! Fun, new & very clean. Awesome food & great service! We had Christian and he was so helpful in recommending the best dishes & even brought the whipped cream can right to the table to top off my Nutella Crapes as they are super rich so I needed a little more whipped cream to balance it. Well he took care of that in 3 huge piles! Perfect and so unexpected now days in a really busy restaurant to have a server go so above & beyond. Thank you for making this the best restaurant experience we have ever had in Down Town San Diego in years of trips here. Hubby loved the super spicy

I went here for breakfast on a Thursday at 9:30am. The waitress did not bring out the drinks we ordered until we flagged her down well after our food arrived and asked here where they were. Additionally, the waitress was very inattentive. The food took a long time to come out. They do have high chairs and are kid friendly, which is difficult to find in the gaslamp district. The food was mediocre for the price, even in this area. We had the Juevos Rancheros, the Chiliquiles, and the French Toast. Mediocre food, mediocre service, and high prices, we wont be going back.

My husband and I are regulars at Broken Yolk Cafe and Im pretty sure weve been to every single location in San Diego. Their menu offers something for everyone in the family from Omelettes, Benedict, to French Toast and Pancakes; they have it all! I love the fact that they have both Turkey sausage and bacon! My husband usually goes for the Make Your Own Omelette since they have all kinds of cheese, meats, vegetables you can imagine and hes never disappointed there given hes a picky eater! Their portions are huge though, so keep that in mind. Oh, and go for the home fries :)
