A couple of months back we had a few visitors from the East Coast. Given the popularity of the Shalimar chain, it was unsurprising that they wanted to taste food from Shalimar. We ordered the following for take away from Shalimar Fremont: 1. Onion Kulcha 2. Goat Curry 3. Chicken Tikka Masala 4. Mutton Seekh Kebab 5. Kadhai Chicken While placing the order, the person taking the order seemed to be in a great hurry. He even put the phone down as I was placing the order. I had to call up a second time. When I went to pick up the food, which was over a hundred dollars. It was literally thrown at me. The customer service was quite in contrast with my experience at Shalimar of San Francisco some nine years back. I wondered if I had made a mistake in continuing with the order when the phone was hung up on me as I was placing the order. May be the food will salvage the situation. On a scale of 0-10: 1. Onion Kulcha (10) 2. Goat Curry (1) 3. Chicken Tikka Masala (1) 4. Mutton Seekh Kebab (5) 5. Kadhai Chicken (0) The Onion Kulchas were the best Kulcha/Naan I have ever had. They remained soft even when they went cold. The Mutton Seekh Kebab was not bad. The texture was decent. It was a bit under-cooked and non-spicy. The others were pathetic! The Kadhai Chicken was sweet! You cant say the food was bland. It was food mass produced without any regard for taste. It was not food at all. Once I finished my share of the Seekh Kebabs, eating the main course would have been impossible if we had food only from Shalimar. Thankfully we had ordered Tandoori Chicken from Indian Chilli, Fremont. It was OK when taken with the succulent Kulchas from Shalimar. Never going back again.

Once you been to THIS Shalimar you will always keep coming back. First there is a system to this place in case youve never been here. Go in and grab the table number and hopefully have someone stay there holding your table, then go to the register and grab a menu, choose what you want, place your order with the man at the counter, tell him your table number and just wait for a bit for your food to arrive. That is when the magic happens!! Let me say that while I am not Pakistani or Indian, my family and I have tasted several other places and keep coming back to this place because at least for us the flavors and intensity of the dishes are amazing!! We are creatures of habit and find that their Aloo Paratha, chicken Tikka, Paneer Masala, Murgh Boti, Banarsi Kheer (dessert) and their delicious rice are a few of the outstanding dishes on their menu. The place is always busy so arrive early, sometimes they will forget something when bringing it to you, just keep your eyes open and the guys bringing the food will quickly remedy any problem you might have, I will add that one of the regular servers is an incredible worker there, he is running up down left and right taking care of dirty dishes, bringing stuff out, asking you if you need anything and to top it off he is super friendly and smart. We all love this place!!

I went to this restaurant yesterday. And there were lot of table empty. I just went alone to have dinner at 9:20 pm. The cashier (with the beard guy) asked to take table no. 25 which had 6 seat capability. I told ok. Than the owner came walking and said take the one person table, I said ok. Than the cashier guy told thats fine take no. 25 (6 seat) table. Than when I came back to the counter to take take onions and spoons, the owner was teasing me and saying 1 person party due to allocation of 6 person table to me. Again when I forgot to take napkins and so I came back to the counter to take napkins, he forwarded his hand with bunch of napkins saying 1 person party so take all napkins. This behaviour was insulting. Also, when he was passing by he was making fun of god Ganesh, because he assumed that my name is Ganesh. This restaurant is owned by Pakistani and not India. Also the food is not tasting at all. Its oily and it seems that they put something into the food, that makes you feel sleepy and heavy in the stomach, so that you come there again and again. I request all Indians and American to boycott this restaurant if you want to truly pay tributes and condolances to people of mumbai attacks. This was ridiculous & insulting behavious by any desi (south asian), that I had ever seen in any part of the US.

If dont know why people are crazy to eat here like if they are getting food for free but wait...oh wow the food is not even cheap...ambiance, cleanliness and service is not even average...This was our first visit and unfortunately we made it there during rush hours of Friday night. After giving order I went to the restroom and oh my my the most disgusting and dirty toilet I have ever seen in my life that I couldnt dare to use :( came out and saw two men standing outside womens restroom kinda awkward..came on my table and told my husband that I dont want to eat here cancel our order but he was like lets just give it a try..Our order came I was so upset to see the quantity of the things we have ordered...We ordered their newly added item Chicken malai boti, they didnt bother to give any chutney or raita or salad with it and it was below average in taste as well..not authentic at all and its just plain and dry and u have to deal with it....not going there again not even any other shalimar..They asked few other customers in front of us if they are done eating coz there are others who are waiting and wants to dine in..Are you Serious? U should never ask ur customers to leave especially if they are having their last few bites..

My company just moved to Walnut Street in Fremont and, on my first trip to the office, I was crushed. It seemed like lunch pickings were going to be slim and singularly unrewarding. How wrong I was. There, in a somewhat down-at-the-heels shopping plaza across the street, was Shalimar. Ive been to the place in the Tenderloin in SF, of course, but this is, if possible, even better. The atmosphere is simultaneously relaxed, vibrant and full of life. On my first visit, someone whom I can only surmise was a functionary from the local mosque was strolling around, glad-handing the patrons. The staff were no-nonsense and business-like but also friendly and welcoming. And, the food... (sigh) the food is the kind that speaks directly to your soul and says, "I am here to nourish you completely and absolutely. Dont worry about presenting me artfully on a giant plate with exotic garnishes and loopy patterns of vegetable paste. Just taste completely, swallow completely and appreciate completely. You will be completely satisfied." And so I was.

This has become my favorite Indian restaurant after one meal! Food here deserves 5 stars as I liked all the dishes we ordered: 1. Lamb brain (daily special) - not gamey/lamby at all, and the texture of cooked lb brain tasted similar to firm tofu. The curry sauce was yummy with the garlic naan (which was stuffed with a ton of garlic in the middle, unusual!) 2. Tandoori chicken leg - good charred flavor but mine was too burnt. Meat was tender and flavorful 3. Okra - best okra curry Ive ever had! The price of all the dishes were fair, portions were medium. Rice and naan were NOT free. This place operates like a cafeteria, you choose and pay for your food first, and they will deliver the food to your table. You grab your own utensils. There were also complimentary chai tea (watered down of course), onion and jelepeno. Dont expect too much service and you will be satisfied with everything else!
